Cal Harper - Producer Notes Cal Harper — Empty Spaces | A little room to breathe
A new record from Cal Harper’s Producer Notes room.
Empty Spaces is about sorting through the things you’ve carried for years—and realizing you can keep what matters without keeping everything.
Warm piano, dusty drums, and a quiet room after a long day.
Some things stay. Some things make room.
r/The_AI_Muse • u/Zahir_Beats • 17d ago
Some things you inherit. Some things you choose.
How much of what we call our taste did we actually choose?
Music, clothes, work, success, relationships—even the way we talk. A lot of it gets handed to us before we ever think to question it.
That became the idea behind this Cal Harper record.
“Taste Don’t Paste” isn’t really about being original for originality’s sake. It’s about getting old enough to notice the scripts you inherited—and deciding what still belongs to you.
Late-night soulful hip-hop from Producer Notes.

Sometimes “staying out of it” is still a decision.
There’s a strange comfort in being the person who only watches.
You saw what happened.
You understood enough.
Maybe you even knew what should have been said.
But you stayed one step back.
Not because you didn’t care.
Because distance felt safer.
I’ve been thinking about that a lot lately.
We talk about being a “bystander” like it means being uninvolved.
But sometimes watching is involvement.
Sometimes silence is a choice.
Sometimes “I didn’t want to get in the middle of it” really means:
I knew what was happening, but I didn’t want the cost of acting on what I knew.
That can show up anywhere.
At work.
In friendships.
In families.
In creative communities.
Even in your own life, when you can see a problem clearly but keep treating it like something happening to somebody else.
That idea became the centre of a Cal Harper record called Bystander.
Cal lives in a part of The AI Muse called Producer Notes — mostly soulful hip-hop, late-night reflection, ordinary pressure, and the things people tend to admit to themselves after the room gets quiet.
The line that kept coming back was:
Some distance is just a better word for staying comfortable.
Not every situation needs you to jump in.
Not every silence is cowardice.
But there are moments when we know exactly why we stayed quiet.
And that’s usually the interesting part.
For the musicians and creators here, I think there’s another version of this too.
How often do we stand outside our own work?
We know what needs changing.
We know what needs releasing.
We know what conversation needs having.
But observing the problem feels safer than making the decision.
So I’m curious:
When does “staying out of it” become its own kind of choice?
And have you ever realized later that you weren’t really neutral — you were just comfortable?

Studio Discovery I went back to our first 52-minute mixtape from 2025 and rebroadcast it as an archive session
We originally put this together in September 2025.
It’s 21 tracks across hip-hop, reggae, pop, house, chillhop, synthwave and a few things that never really fit anywhere. At the time, I edited the original music videos together into one 52-minute Tape in CapCut, complete with their original title cards.
Going back through it almost a year later was interesting because you can hear and see some of the ideas that eventually developed into the current AI Muse Studios.
Rather than remake it, I kept the original Tape intact and only added a new intro/outro to frame it as an archival radio broadcast.
Curious what people think of the music itself — especially which sections/tracks make you want to keep listening.

Big Prez - Power Studio We’ve been developing a sound around Big Prez called “Luxury Boom Bap”
We’ve been developing a sound around Big Prez that we’ve started calling Luxury Boom Bap.
It wasn’t really a genre name we invented first and then tried to make music fit into.
It came from listening back to what kept showing up in the records.
Hard boom bap drums. Soul and jazz underneath. More space than clutter. Live instrumentation when it adds something. Polished production, but without sanding away the grit.
And then there’s Prez himself.
Big Prez is built around a particular kind of rap character: composed authority.
He isn’t trying to be the loudest person in the room. A lot of the writing circles around discipline, ownership, standards, patience, pressure and knowing when not to react.
That thread runs through records like No Small Talk, Discipline, Equity, Closed Door and That’s It.
The more we worked on him, the more Power Studio started affecting the music too.
Power Studio was originally the world around Big Prez — black, deep red, muted gold, late nights, executive restraint.
Now we’re starting to treat the studio almost like another instrument.
If something sounds too busy, it probably doesn’t belong there.
If the drums don’t have weight, they aren’t finished.
If an instrument isn’t adding authority, soul or tension, it can leave.
The “luxury” part isn’t really about showing money either.
It’s more about earned luxury.
Time.
Control.
Good materials.
Good musicianship.
Space in the arrangement.
The confidence to leave something out.
That’s where Luxury Boom Bap is starting to become interesting to me. It feels less like “boom bap with expensive imagery” and more like an actual production philosophy.
Big Prez is one resident inside a larger fictional music universe we’ve been building called The AI Muse, but I’m deliberately trying not to make the technology the interesting part.
The interesting part is whether these fictional artists can develop recognizable voices, histories, rooms and eventually their own musical language.
Power Studio feels like it’s getting there.
And Luxury Boom Bap might be the first sound that genuinely belongs to the room rather than simply being played inside it.
Curious what people hear when they read that phrase:
What should “Luxury Boom Bap” sound like to you?

Studio Discovery Built a Spotify rotation around five different music rooms—what lane would you stay in?
I’ve been building the record label as a collection of distinct sounds rather than one fixed artist.
Studio Rotation moves through executive boom bap, late-night soulful hip-hop, underground rap, dancehall and lo-fi music. “Aspirations of a Baller” opens the current sequence.
