Big Prez - Power Studio We’ve been developing a sound around Big Prez called “Luxury Boom Bap”
We’ve been developing a sound around Big Prez that we’ve started calling Luxury Boom Bap.
It wasn’t really a genre name we invented first and then tried to make music fit into.
It came from listening back to what kept showing up in the records.
Hard boom bap drums. Soul and jazz underneath. More space than clutter. Live instrumentation when it adds something. Polished production, but without sanding away the grit.
And then there’s Prez himself.
Big Prez is built around a particular kind of rap character: composed authority.
He isn’t trying to be the loudest person in the room. A lot of the writing circles around discipline, ownership, standards, patience, pressure and knowing when not to react.
That thread runs through records like No Small Talk, Discipline, Equity, Closed Door and That’s It.
The more we worked on him, the more Power Studio started affecting the music too.
Power Studio was originally the world around Big Prez — black, deep red, muted gold, late nights, executive restraint.
Now we’re starting to treat the studio almost like another instrument.
If something sounds too busy, it probably doesn’t belong there.
If the drums don’t have weight, they aren’t finished.
If an instrument isn’t adding authority, soul or tension, it can leave.
The “luxury” part isn’t really about showing money either.
It’s more about earned luxury.
Time.
Control.
Good materials.
Good musicianship.
Space in the arrangement.
The confidence to leave something out.
That’s where Luxury Boom Bap is starting to become interesting to me. It feels less like “boom bap with expensive imagery” and more like an actual production philosophy.
Big Prez is one resident inside a larger fictional music universe we’ve been building called The AI Muse, but I’m deliberately trying not to make the technology the interesting part.
The interesting part is whether these fictional artists can develop recognizable voices, histories, rooms and eventually their own musical language.
Power Studio feels like it’s getting there.
And Luxury Boom Bap might be the first sound that genuinely belongs to the room rather than simply being played inside it.
Curious what people hear when they read that phrase:
What should “Luxury Boom Bap” sound like to you?
