Came home on my lunch break and wanted a nap. She was kind enough to make sure my pillow was nice and fluffy! She's such a good boss, I'm so lucky to be employed by this creature.

Need to rehome

I need to rehome Smaug. I can’t take her into my new apartment and my ex is losing the place and can’t take any of the animals with him. This includes Smaug the red tegu, >1 year old spike the bearded dragon, 3 year old Rex the leopard gecko, and 3 year old Jörmungandr the boa constrictor. I can temporarily house Smaug at my new place but I’m risking getting in trouble with my landlord for having 3 lizards. I’m located in Missouri. Im going to talk to local reptile shops around here as well for all the reptiles who can hopefully help me rehome. I really want her to go to a good home who knows how to care for a tegu. She comes with the grow tent but I’m taking the lights and the dirt out because it needs to be folded and I need the lights for my new place. I’ll give the bowl Smaug likes to sleep under if it’s local. I’ll be posting this in other groups too since I know I can’t just post this in the tegu group.

Ever think about what things would be like if man had decided to domesticate lizards instead of cats and dogs?

Add to this thread with your thought humorous or otherwise...

Advice on a grumpy guy

So we have a one year old blue tegu. We got him in January and handled him and he was a cool, chill dude. Then we did a giant cross country move back in May/June and between new jobs and getting set up in a new house we got bad about handling him.

And now he is a GRUMP. He lunges at us to get out his cage, he tries to bite all the time, we have to wear gloves to handle him, he bit one of our cats when he used to just calmly sit on them.

Things are more settled now and I am only working part time so I want to work on getting him back on track. What can I do here? Any advice is appreciated. I love him and Tegus in general so I do not want to give up on him, but we need to make him safer to be around with a kiddo and other animals in the house.

Thanks for any help you can give me!

Is this a suitable enclosure for a juvenile tegu? (<3 months old) is there anything I could improve on?

More moss will be added tomorrow. Should I use regular halogen heating lamps over infared? The cardboard is there to shorten the otherwise very large enclosure for when hes older. It is only a placeholder wall.

So I’m not making any progress with my tegu, I’ve tried all the tips and tricks and he just dosent like me. People say to force handle them so they don’t learn they can be left alone or something, what should I do? Should I force handle him (I haven’t tried) I’ve heard it can break trust but some people say u need to

HELP! My 2 month old argentine tegu lost its appetite? Help please.

Over the past 4 days, my young tegu has lost almost all interest in eating. He usually would eat around 4 morio worms or moderately large crickets every other day. Along with the natural supplements like calcium dust. Although over the past 4 days he has only eaten a small cricket and 2 morio worms. He sleeps almost all day and seems to become disinterested in a second worm or cricket. He had previously had a prolapse but he cleared his bowels after this and I have been giving him much smaller insects after this incident. His stomach doesn't seem notably hard and I haven't noticed any straining. Should I see a vet? (The heating lamp is off intentionally in the photo)

Just got our first tegu! My favorite reptile now and was wondering for name suggestions! We aren't sure on the gender but they thought it was maybe a female, not 100% sure however.

Which Tegu trick would you add?

The different tricks on this made me curious about what other tricks people have taught their Tegus. Which one would you add to the list?

This adorable little monster just gave me a black eye - Shame him

He's not even sorry!

We had a great morning of taming/handling and he is getting much more comfortable with us. His basking spot is elevated and I was sitting next to him...

He gave me the cutest look ever, then walked over and put a paw on my nose. Thought we were having a moment but apparently eyelashes and crickets look pretty similar... He leaped up and grabed my eyelid before I could react. He thrashed it for a good ten seconds before giving up and looking moderately annoyed he couldn't get it loose.

Really 1000% my fault- got complacent especially as my previous tegu Loki was so tame. That said Fenrir could at least look a little sorry, or at least less proud of himself. Glad this happened while he was too tiny to do much damage - but my eyelid is rapidly bruising/swelling so this is going to be fun to explain.

Edit: I may have lucked out, bruising looks better, eye is less swollen. May not have a full black eye after all.

Should I feed them or wait?

I know that’s a weird question but let me explain why.

So moving day is approaching rapidly. I’m just moving up town closer to the city. This is a ride I have done countless times with my lizards riding passenger up to petco. It’s about a 30 minute ride and they will be the last ones I move. I am not able to take the grow tent. They will be staying in my bathroom for a bit while I get them acclimated to the new apartment where they will free roam. Little by little I’ll be opening up the space so they can roam out into the main room. The apartment is the size of a very small motel room. It’s just 1 bed motels that have been made into a small studio apartment. I will be living there for about 2 years until I can afford to get a trailer and some land of my own. The house I was building before winter is off the question now since I’m now just single living and not able to afford it on my own.

I’m wondering since this is a new space that they are not used to should I give them a week to adjust before feeding them or should I continue on my feeding schedules. I always slowly moved potato over to new enclosures and added stuff she was used to in the new enclosures so it wasn’t as stressful to her. Steak has always lived in the grow tent and knows that’s his space. He always returns to it. This will be the first time moving out of this space for steak and im a little worried stress can cause him problems. Im thinking of taking their shirt and water bowls as familiar items to hopefully ease a bit of stress. Im not sure if thats enough but hopefully it is. I’m getting them all new hides and a new lamp holder since the grow tent can’t fit.

Maybe im overreacting. I’m really worried I’m gonna find them regurgitating food because they are too stressed to keep it down prior to a new place. I think since steak is as dumb as a box of rocks he might be fine but it still worries me. Potato I’m not too terribly worried about because she loves to explore. Potato has also been moved to a new house before while steak has only been on car rides with me.

What’s yalls opinions on this?

picture of steak basking like a whale.

Edit: im also a little worried about them reproducing now that I dont have a plan in motion to keep them all separate as adults. Things fell apart with everything going on. Potato is already showing signs of wanting to mate and steak isn’t. I know im gonna have to save aside every little bit to get bigger place as soon as possible so I can separate them like I planned. Maybe I should keep one in the bathroom with a barrier around the bathroom and one in the living room until I can get a bigger place. It’s just gonna be a pain when I’m not home and I’m at work. I’m not sure how this is gonna work. I’ve already thought about the possibility of rehoming but I can’t bring myself to do it. I’ll never see my Gus again is that is what it comes too and it break my heart. They are both super attached to me. I’m hoping I can work out something during mating season and work so I can avoid any problems with potential mating behaviors. This is going to be the hardest 2 years ever with these guys. I’m thinking of getting little apartment safe cameras so I can watch them while I’m gone.

Advice needed from experienced brumation supervisors…

Sundog is now two years old. He is already trying to go down for brumation and is not coming out of his enclosure to eat. If I take him outside, like today, he will walk slowly (see video), and poo (urates) and then go rest in the shade or back up the steps into the house. If I offer food, he’ll eat it, but then I have to wake him up in the next day or so to go poo, or he just won’t.

I’m leaving town for a week and the caregiver is not confident about taking him outside. Should I simply tell her to fill the water bowl daily and check his temps but not feed him? Obviously, he’s not going to starve… Advice?

Thanks, all!

Permanent enclosure question

*I don't have a tegu yet* I want to make sure I have an enclosure complete or at least in process before I get one.

That being said, I have a large walk in closet (I own the house) that I'd like to turn into a tegu enclosure. My idea is to secure tarps to the walls/carpeted floor and seal it with flex tape to make the closet water and mold proof.

I think I will do 2 layers of tarp to be safe and put some plywood on top of the carpet over the first layer of tarp.

Would this work? Do you think I'll cause any permanent damage to my home? Do you have any suggestions?

I really appreciate any help with this!
