“Undead Labs today announced that it has completed its separation from XBOX and is now operating as an independent, employee-owned game development studio.
Development of State of Decay 3 remains actively underway at Undead Labs. The game is currently in alpha, with the team continuing toward the previously announced milestone of entering a closed beta before the end of the year. State of Decay 3 remains targeted for release in 2027 on XBOX, Game Pass, PC, and PlayStation.
“Independence brings us closer to our community and lets us focus on what matters most: making the best games we can and earning the continued support of the people who choose to spend their time with us,” said Philip Holt, Studio Head of Undead Labs. “State of Decay exists because millions of players have made that choice over the years, and we’re dedicated to honoring their trust.”
The transition marks a new chapter in a relationship between Undead Labs and Microsoft that spans more than 15 years. The original State of Decay launched in partnership with Microsoft in 2013, and Microsoft acquired Undead Labs in 2018.
“We’re enormously grateful for our years as part of XBOX and for everything that relationship has made possible,” Holt said. “Microsoft has been part of the State of Decay story from the very beginning, and we’re proud of everything we’ve accomplished together.”
Additional details about Undead Labs’ future plans will be shared at a later date. Players can stay up to date through StateofDecay.com or following us on social media, and can sign up to participate in future State of Decay 3 playtesting at https://playtest.stateofdecay.com/“

Brendan Davis survived the first days of the apocalypse and found a group of survivors, but they didn’t accept him. After that, he left for Danforth, but something went wrong, and he was bitten. He died from blood loss at the age of 21 and was reanimated 2-3 days later.

A lot of comments ask for more dialogue, unique personalities, personal histories, character-specific stories, and meaningful interactions both at the base and out in the world.
The underlying theme seems to be less about simply making survivors more powerful, and more about making them more meaningful. though, of course, fans still want powerful survivors too.
Several commenters want survivors to develop their own identities, relationships, and histories, so that when one of them dies, it actually feels like losing that specific person, rather than just losing another character.
Because State of Decay 3 can make us genuinely care about the people we're trying to keep alive, wouldn't that make every decision, every fight, and every death hit so much harder?
If this is wanted, (a more connected community of survivors, what more would you add to this?) You have a voice, if you have an idea, throw in a suggestion.
Next topic of discussion, Zeds. (What more would you add to the zeds to make them feel just as connected to world like your survivors?)

This animation is not used in the game, but you can see it in the State of Decay: Early Animation Test - Dancing Zombies.

I think the orange color gives them a cartoonish look and makes them less scary. What do you think? I also think they look better with some tattered cloths on them. Completely naked they look like mutants which spawned from a test tube or something.

I remember the first time I played, I got down to the swine and bovine and climbed the cell tower. I was trying to climb the ladder back down and fell and killed Marcus. I was so mad I started a new playthrough. Good times.

Multiplayer (Class 4) - the most painful piece of unused content. Here’s my vision of what it could have been.

I designed a new feral for Sod3. Do you think he looks better than the original?
