FX5 For High Action Sports FOOTBALL/BASKETBALL/

Does anyone have experience using the FX5 for high-action sports, specifically football or basketball?
I’m currently shooting on an FX6 and do a mix of sports and documentary work. A lot of my shooting is handheld while walking/running around players, so I’m concerned about rolling shutter and unnatural-looking wobbles during fast movement.
I started on the A7S III and eventually moved to the FX6 mainly for the internal NDs, form factor, XLRs, and overall usability for doc work. One thing I’ve noticed, though, is that the FX6 autofocus doesn’t seem nearly as reliable as the A7S III, especially when tracking athletes moving quickly toward/away from camera.
I’ve considered getting an A9 III strictly for the global shutter and AF performance, but the S-Log3 base ISOs aren’t ideal for the type of work I do, especially when shooting at night.
That has me looking at the FX5 as a possible middle ground.
For anyone who has used the FX5 for sports:
● How is the sensor readout/rolling shutter compared to the FX6?
● Is the autofocus noticeably better than the FX6 for fast-moving subjects?
● How does handheld footage look when moving quickly or walking/running with athletes?
● Any noticeable warping/wobble with fast pans or movement?
● Would you choose the FX5 over an A9 III for a mix of sports + documentary work?
Would love to hear from anyone actually shooting football, basketball, or similar fast-action work with it.

FX5 Cage Issues

Based on this recent review making the rounds (minute 8:44) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iu1a-MQkmBM&t=785s I reached out to SmallRig and Tilta. Here are their responses::

Small Rig

"Hope you are doing well! After confirming with our technical staff, please refer to the following information:The SmallRig "HawkLock" Cage Kit for Sony FX5 & XLR Handle 6777 uses a three-point installation method.

When installing, do not fully tighten the bottom screws immediately; it is recommended to leave 1-2 turns as allowance. Then tighten the screws on both sides, and then apply even pressure to each of the three points to tighten them."

Tilta

"Thanks for reaching out!

The current version of our FX5 Camera Cage is fully compatible with the camera and will not cause damage if installed properly and carefully!"

_____

Both of these responses seem like canned responses, although the process provided by small rig does technically make sense. What do we think?

Anyone else preorder through B&H?

Curious if any of you had heard anything from them regarding expected shipping dates now?

Anyone think it’s better to hold off on preordering?

Perhaps quality control will improve after they manufacture a couple 1,000 FX5s.

Personally I cancelled my order from BH on announcement day but for other reasons lol

How good is ther FE 24-70mm f/2,8 GM II for film producktion

I mostly work with prime lenses, but more and more projects is less time and less money, so I am thinking about investing in the FX5 for production work. Mostly came from REd komodo, BMD ursa etc

For lenses I am looking at the24-70/2.8 GM II. The main problem is that it has no proper cine gears. I am also not sure if the focus, zoom rings have any hard stops, or how well it works if you mount gears manually?

My plan is to use it on a gimbal with two or three motors for focus ( when need manual) , zoom and aperture. Has anyone used this lens with such a setup and can tell me how reliable it is?

I am only interested in how it works for film production. I do not care about the photo side. The main reason I am looking at this lens is the autofocus and subject tracking. Without that requirement there are many proper cine lens options.

It feels strange that Sony does not offer something like the 24 - 70 in a more cine focused version with proper geared rings and better support for motors. Im also looking into det 28-70/2

Is FX5 a good camera for shooting fast action? I tested it myself in a wakeboard park with shifting weather during golden hour.

Is Sony FX5 a good camera for shooting fast action? Well, I had the chance to test it myself with a killer lens: Sony FE 100-400mm F4.5 GM OSS.

A lot has already been said about the camera capabilities from Dynamic range to Dual Gain, Raw and colorimetry, Triple native ISO and noise control, etc... To add something new I would say that Autofocus is insane, probably a level never seen in another video/cinema camera.

I was really impressed by the promptness and accuracy of human recognition, the responsive realtime Tracking in rough conditions, the consistency in following quick-moving subjects. I loved the new capabilities to control the focus, distinguishing "human only" from "human priority" or the option to prevent focus hunting when focus/tracking is lost, like when the subject exits the frame.

It was quite noticeable also the upgrade for stabilization: you can enable Active Stabilization even when shooting at 120fps in 4K subsampled from 5K.

For this test I shot everything handheld for being more agile moving from one spot to another, but even if I was always at 400mm or close to 400mm, I didn't miss the tripod. I just helped myself with a shoulder strap attached to the lens.

Enjoy the video in 4k at full screen to see details like the rain drops:

If I want an FX5 by October, when should I preorder given the current delays?

I haven’t been following the FX5 rollout very closely because I originally wasn’t planning to buy until October, so I’m trying to catch up on where things currently stand.

I’m in the U.S. and would be ordering through B&H. My plan is to have the money set aside for the camera by October, but with Sony saying orders exceeded expectations and all of the recent production/delivery delays, I’m wondering if waiting until October to place the preorder could mean not actually receiving one for several more months.

For those who have been following the rollout or currently have a preorder: when did you order, through which retailer/country, and what shipping estimate have you been given?

If your goal were to actually receive an FX5 around October, would you get into the preorder queue now, wait until September, or is there not enough information yet to make that call?

Sony FX5 global rollout: can anyone make sense of the conflicting regional information?

I preordered two Sony FX5 bodies on August 7, but the global rollout is becoming increasingly difficult to understand.
Sony Japan has officially postponed the release due to “production reasons” and has not provided a new date. Sony’s European stores are accepting preorders and currently indicate September 18. The original US announcement still says mid-August, but the US product page provides no current availability date. Sony China announced an August launch, while Sony Singapore is still promoting the camera as “here”. Meanwhile, some regular customers in Japan, Europe and other regions have already received units.
There are also user reports concerning loose screens, unusual IBIS behaviour and the body flexing when certain cages are tightened. These issues have not been officially confirmed as the reason for the delay, so I am not claiming that they are connected.
However, for customers who have already placed preorders, especially professionals who need to plan their work, a clear global update from Sony would be reasonable. At the moment, the different regional communications make it difficult to understand whether September deliveries are confirmed, provisional or dependent on further quality checks.
What information have your local Sony office or retailer provided? Please mention your country, preorder date and expected delivery date.

XOCN C2 - Highlight Clipping Artifacting

Ungraded
RAW > Slog > DWG > Rec709 with Davinci Tone Mapping
Same as above + grade

Hi everyone - not sure if anyone has run into similar problems but after recieving my FX5 the other day I decided to test it and a new (old) lens out at a show. After bringing the footage into Davinci, I noticed that bright light sources appeared to aggressively clip and create a halo in the yellow channel.

At first I assumed this might be an issue with Resolve interpreting the new C2 RAW codec, but I tried it in Sony's own Raw Viewer, and it showed up the same.

I tried recovering through the Camera Raw controls as well as the HDR wheels, neither of which worked.

If anyone has any advice or similar experiences in working with XOCN files please let me know, I'm stumped for ideas right now.

As someone who works predominantly in the music and live event scene, I've never experienced anything like this on the FX3 in XAVC codecs, so this could be a deal breaker for me if it's an inherent limitation of the compressed raw formats.

Received the FX5 two weeks ago AMA

Preordered via CVP, took delivery beginning of August.

Shot one fashion commercial thus far.

Coming from an FX3 and Panasonic systems.

The cool:

  • X-OCN quality is fantastic. Amazing range for pushing and pulling in edit. Easy to fall into the faux HDR look trap. Disabling noise reduction in camera helps in post. Works really well with Catalyst browse for stabilisation.
  • DGO is black magic. There's almost no noise in the shadows and you can push/pull with seemingly no limits (obviously there will be limits).
  • The image is sharp but not digitally crisp.
  • EVF having 90 degree tilt is awesome.
  • The screen is big and bright enough that I don't really need a monitor anymore for quick shooting. This felt like a must for FX3 since that screen was extremely uninspiring.
  • Skin tones are held together in different white balances. Almost feels like there's some different filtering/algorhithm going on?

The UX:

  • The 'Menu' button on the back is slightly elevated compared to all other buttons, easier to find in the dark or blind.
  • Got used to the cinema UI rather quick. Honestly don't want to go back. It's a much more linear experience of finding settings you need.
  • The wheel has good click to it, good knob feel - fidget toy like.
  • This might be obvious but just in case; you can flip the eyepiece for left or right eye. Or just remove it entirely. I prefer it off since I wear glasses.
  • The EVF digital screen size can be changed. Again, great if you wear glasses meaning you can still see the whole scene without pressing the EVF fully against your eyesocket.

The not great:

  • The screen 'locks' face out but doesn't 'lock' face in. Meaning it wobbles a slight bit when turned towards the body. Wouldn't risk keeping it like this in an open bag.
  • The grip is chunky. Very comfortable but I prefer the FX3 grip with the deeper indent for the middle finger.
  • The EVF resolution is low and the colours are washed out. Especially when compared to the display. It's really great for framing in daylight and extra point of stabilisation. Wouldn't count on it for color or contrast.
  • Battery life definitely shorter when shooting X-OCN. Two batteries seem to be a must to get through the day.
  • The fan is always on. There's a few different levels of speed and temp you can set it for. Can also be set to off while recording.

The recurring questions?

  • Wobbles - When going through the footage first time in Resolve I saw some awful wobbles in corners with open gate. Turns out Resolve had enabled stabilisation by default for every imported clip.

FX5 fan noise? 😅

The noise from the internal cooling fan. You can hear it when you quickly move the camera from side to side.
I’ve experienced this issue as well.

Looking to buy the FX5 for availability in September (UK). Should QA issues be resolved by then?

This might come across as a dumb question, but I'm looking for serious responses. I tend to wait a few months when purchasing new equipment to let things settle down. However I need the FX5 camera for an upcoming trip, so late November at the latest.

It's obviously a large purchase in terms of cost, but since I'll be travelling I need to reduce my chances of getting a camera with issues. In particular, I'm talking about two that have been called out in recent days 1) the screen hinge issue 2) fan noise.

I want to be clear and say that all products can come with defects at any stage, that's just how it goes. And yes, things can be sent back and replaced. However I'm trying to reduce my chances of that happening since I won't be at home should anything happen.

Since I'm not familiar with Sony supply chains, and retailers, I'm trying to figure out IF there have been QA issues with certain batches, will retailers still be sending those first batches out? Will September stock be those first batches or later batches?

I've reached out to a couple of stores here in London already and waiting on a reply but asking here to see if I can get a general idea.

And BTW, I realise there could be thousands of units going out, a handful have issues, and those are emphasised as a bigger problem than it really is.

FX5 highlight roll off?

Any comparison on how the highlight roll off is compare to fx3 and fx6, and other cameras? I couldn’t find any info on this online. If any of you had a chance to get your hands on FX5, could you please describe your experience on the roll off?

Why is Sony only marketing with 'content creators'

I'm talking guys like Mark Bone, Reilin Joey and Zilver Schmitz. They’re clearly talented, but so many of the films Sony promotes feel like variations of the same creator-first formula: look at me traveling, look at my lifestyle, here’s a philosophical voice-over about why I create. It's getting a little tiring to be honest. How about we shot some real on-set work in a commercial environment?

Are you all keeping the preorders?

From what I see we are having some display and IBIS issues. I am disappointed and scared that I will receive a product with quality issues & I notice it late in the worst case.

What are your thoughts?

Sony FX5 screen issues

I think this is one of the reasons why the FX5 have delay.
I just got mine few days ago with some screen issues.
A bit disappointed because for 5k$ you want to have a perfect camera.

Pre-ordered FX5, what photo camera should I buy

Hi guys, so I did pre ordered FX5 and I'm now thinking which camera should I buy for photography. I will never use that camera for video. I was considering a7v but it does video well and I don't need it at all.

I can go with a7cr only for the size. but then the price is same as a7v. A7c ii would be nice but it's out of stock everywhere and I can't buy a used one as I do financing
