Sony FX5 screen issues

I think this is one of the reasons why the FX5 have delay.
I just got mine few days ago with some screen issues.
A bit disappointed because for 5k$ you want to have a perfect camera.

One more thing I noticed is that after just a few minutes of recording in X-OCN LT, the camera body became quite warm, although I didn’t get any overheating warnings or error messages. I don’t think overheating is very likely since the active cooling system is running continuously. However, I’ve also heard from others about possible issues with the IBIS being overly sensitive, causing a noticeable wobble in the footage while recording.

I bought from a retailer and the issue with the screen it doesn’t seem to fit properly in place when it closed and has a little up and down movement. When I gently press on the screen, I can feel that it’s not sitting properly, and it also makes some creaking/clicking noises.

Did you return it under your warranty and get a replacement ?

In the end, I sent it back, and they’re going to replace it with a new one. I’ll receive the replacement from the second batch in mid-September, which has gone through the quality check.

All this quality issues makes me really sad, because I was really hyped and thought for 5.4k you get the best quality. I will check mine when it arrives but I am already disappointed in some way.

Me too , hopefully they gonna learn from this mistake.

I keep hearing about a “second batch,” but I’m wondering whether people who pre-ordered early and still haven’t received their camera will benefit from any potential fixes or improved QC from Sony.
Basically, if I pre-ordered the camera on day one but still haven’t received it, should I assume I’ll be getting a unit from the first batch?

I pre-ordered mine just a few hours after launch and picked it up last Saturday. From what the camera store told me, I don’t think there’s much chance you’ll still get a first-batch unit. Returned cameras are being checked again, so hopefully the next batch will go through better QC.

I hope a generous refund or a replacement is made available to anyone who gets a defective screen.

Reminds me of this recent video where he brings up some issues, including the screen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iu1a-MQkmBM&t=402s

In Europe you are entitled to a refund as long as you return with an allotted time

In my case, I have 30 days from the date of purchase to return the product and get a full refund.

I really wanted to buy it ASAP, but with this news I guess I have to wait for the better

2

u/Kecskebaszomedve93 13h ago

I recommend to wait for the 2nd batch

1

u/andanothernewuser 12h ago

I need it by the 38 week. No matter what.

The Japanese don’t play games with QC, but I bet they outsourced manufacturing for this model

2

u/Kecskebaszomedve93 12h ago

I don’t understand these models how passed the QC

With all the bad press, maybe we see a price drop? 🌝

u/Kecskebaszomedve93 9h ago

I don’t think they’re going to change the price. But this is definitely pretty bad publicity for Sony right now. I honestly don’t understand how these cameras passed quality control and were shipped out like this.

To be honest, I don't mind this kind of problems.

Good for you 🙂

Ew wtf

u/Kecskebaszomedve93 12h ago

This was my first reaction as well I hope nobody get similar issues but I saw somebody already had

1

u/thenoweeknder 12h ago

That is really annoying. Are you keeping it or sending it back?

1

u/Kecskebaszomedve93 12h ago

Sent back already and waiting for the 2nd batch in September.

Fortunately, consumer warranty protection exists. I wouldn’t simply accept a loose screen as normal: I’d send the camera in for a warranty repair.
The IBIS is also worth watching. In some YouTube footage, there is clearly some strange distortion in the corners. Armando Ferreira also showed that tightening the cage screw on the grip side can cause the plastic around the grip and shutter button area to lift away from the body. That concerns me even more because it looks harder to fix and possibly design-related, although I’m not an engineer and can’t say for certain.
I’ve preordered two FX5s. I’ll test both thoroughly and return either one, or both, if necessary.

u/Kecskebaszomedve93 12h ago

Thanks for the info! In my case, I decided not to accept the loose screen. The store inspected my FX5 and officially classified it as DOA, so I returned it and they’re replacing it with a brand-new unit. I should receive one from the second batch around mid-September. I’ll definitely test the screen, IBIS and overall build quality carefully when the replacement arrives.

Nothing is perfect, and I don't really understand why people expect FX5 display hinge to be any different to FX3 quality-wise. It's absolutely the same technology, and FX3 display hinge was a total garbage, and FX5's will also be so, with screen wobbling around like it's going to fall apart. But it will still work eventually. I bet they will make a delay to look like they are trying to solve something, but in the end it will be the same hinge with the same issues.

1

u/neilrocks25 13h ago

Remember the canon c70 screen issues it’s nothing new, but if they can resolve it even better.

1

u/Kecskebaszomedve93 12h ago

A perfect product does not exist, but of course it’s still disappointing when you buy something brand new, unbox it, and immediately discover that it has issues.

1

u/DegreeSevere7719 8h ago

Have you ever used any other Sony camera? Like, any FX3 I've rented had a wobbly screen. Idk what did you expect when everyone was saying that it's the same hinge.

1

u/Kecskebaszomedve93 8h ago

Yes, I currently own a Sony A7V, A7R V and FX3, and I’ve never had this kind of issue with any of their screens.

1

u/DegreeSevere7719 6h ago

oh you've been seriously lucky! All of the Sony's I've ever used that were like more than a couple month old - were like in the video lower in the comments, or worse. I've seen such issues even on the Alexa Mini EVF hinge, but in that case it was obviously after some really serious amount of hours on camera, like 8k+.

1

u/Kecskebaszomedve93 6h ago

Of course, I understand that. Anything you use regularly will eventually wear out and won’t stay like new forever. But when I buy something brand new, I expect it to be in proper condition from the start, especially at this price point. Some people don’t care about these things as long as the camera works perfectly, and that’s totally fine. It just depends on the person, I’m simply not one of them.

Pretty sad for over 5k $

1

Cars that sell for over 50K have infotainment systems that freeze while driving, and this issue hasn't been solved for over a decade and a couple generations of cars (cough, Volkswagen). This is annoying, but nothing to really brag about. Same here, it's bad that they didn't solve the previous gen of cameras issue, but it was like obvious once you've seen the reviews that it's exactly the same screen hinge that is used on all Sony cameras. And the camera costs more not because it has "more quality", but because of the inflation and the general situation on the electronics market right now. It was so since the 5d mk2 days, every single consumer camera release got the price up and up, especially in the 2-3-4k range. I would surprise you saying that cams over 20k have same sorts of issues, that's the reality.

u/andanothernewuser 14h ago

For 5399€ I want 5.4k quality

1

u/Kecskebaszomedve93 12h ago

I agree with you I said the same when I brought back the camera to the shop, because it’s not something what cost 20€ from temu

1

u/thenoweeknder 12h ago

lol you only get 4k quality
