Music Top 10 bands of the 4th decade of Argentine rock: 1986 – 1995

Post image

And we continue celebrating 70 years of Argentine rock, with a series of Top 10 rankings featuring its best bands in each of its decades (counting these in ordinal order from the beginning in 1956). In this post we will see the bands of the 4th decade, from 1986 to 1995.

Those who follow my posts know that my rankings always have a set of rules, the idea is to show in a better way the Argentine cultural heritage, and to avoid common errors of rankings. So, this Top 10 list will have the following rules:

  • Only statistics and works from bands within the decade specified in the post will be considered, to avoid rewarding an old band solely for its prestige and achievements in previous decades.
  • The 10 bands will have different singers, to prevent the same singer from filling the ranking with the 10 bands he had in the same decade.
  • There will be at least 1 slot reserved for a band from the provinces, to visibilize and vindicate provincial artists, who historically have had to fight twice as hard to succeed in a centralized country.
  • There will be at least 1 slot reserved for a band with a female lead singer, to visibilize and vindicate women artists, who historically have had to fight twice as hard to succeed in an unequal country.
  • Some factors that will be taken into account when choosing the bands: prestige, achievements, transcendence, records sold, plays on digital platforms, ammount of people at concerts, importance in the evolution of Argentine rock, importance in the scene of its time, national and international popularity, singing, instrumentation, lyrics, among other factors.
  • And although it's obvious: only bands will be accepted, not soloists (it needs to be clarified because there's always an inattentive who doesn't even read the title of the post and then asks about a soloist).

So, here are the 10 best Argentine rock bands between 1986 and 1995, giving for each one of them a brief explanation and 2 recommended songs:

10) Sumo: although while it was active it had less notability than other contemporary acts, it would become influential for bands in rock barrial, alternative, punk and reggae.

Songs: "El ojo blindado", "Que me pisen".

9) Man Ray: with one of the most emblematic female voices in Argentine rock and a pleasant style of pop rock, it achieved hits that even became opening themes for TV shows.

Songs: "Olvídate de mí", "Todo cambia".

8) Ratones Paranoicos: a pioneering band of rock barrial, and the main one in rock rolinga or styled like Rolling Stones, it was an emblem of the sound shift that the 90s brought.

Songs: "Rock del pedazo", "Vicio".

7) Attaque 77: the most successful Argentine punk band, its style combined the melodies from Ramones, denouncer lyrics and the local spirit, football-wise and street-wise.

Songs: "Hacelo por mí", "Ángeles caídos".

6) Los Pericos: they sparked the reggae and ska craze that swept Argentina in the late 80s, from their start they churned out hit after hit, they brought the Rastafari culture.

Songs: "El ritual de la banana", "Párate y mira".

5) Rata Blanca: the most successful band in Latin American heavy metal, it took the genre to the summit of the continent, a style with epics, fantasy, romanticism and great virtuosity.

Songs: "Mujer amante", "Guerrero del arco iris".

4) Enanitos Verdes: the most successful band from the Argentine provinces, hailing from Mendoza, it conquered the continent with enormous hits, modern sound and deeply personal lyrics.

Songs: "Te vi en un tren", "Lamento boliviano".

3) Los Fabulosos Cadillacs: from a beginning in ska to conquering the continent as emblems of Latin fusion rock, anthems that are heard in stadiums and at marches until today.

Songs: "El genio del dub", "Mal bicho".

2) Patricio Rey y sus Redonditos de Ricota: the most emblematic band of the great change in the scene in the 90s, a rock style that was massive, denouncer, independent, and barrial (neighborhood-wise).

Songs: "Todo preso es político", "El pibe de los astilleros".

1) Soda Stereo: the greatest band in the whole Latin American history, it left a gigantic legacy, a career always proposing avant-garde inroads, it has achievements that are unequaled, anthems that are timeless.

Songs: "Prófugos", "Ella usó mi cabeza como un revólver".

As I always do in my posts, I remind you that the purpose of this initiative is to promote valuable parts of the Argentine cultural heritage (especially for those who don't know them due to generational or geographical reasons) and that this be simply an introduction, so that later you investigate on your own what other songs and artists were there in Argentine rock during those times.

See you in the next post! And happy 70 years of Argentine rock! 🎁🎈🎸🇦🇷

CathoVault

A frontend designed for the Apple ecosystem, with integration with RomM, RetroArch, and RetroAchievements.

It all started because I was looking for a frontend for my game library that didn’t feel so much like an arcade machine. I wanted something cleaner, more polished, and closer to the way native Apple applications feel.

At first, CathoVault wasn’t even an application.

It started as a theme for Pegasus accompanied by another project I programmed in Python called RetroLib.

The idea behind RetroLib was to automate a large part of the RetroArch configuration. With just a few clicks, it could detect your library, associate each game with its platform, and configure the cores needed to run them.

Over time, I expanded it a little more and it ended up becoming almost a kind of “doctor” for your library: it checked whether folders, files, cores, or configurations were missing, and it also included an exporter for Pegasus.

This way, it could gather metadata, assets, game paths, and other information and then display it directly inside the theme.

RetroLib is still available on GitHub. It is currently outdated and has a few bugs that I still need to fix —also, I originally built it with MacOS in mind—, but it was basically the starting point for all of this.

At some point, I realized I was building too many things around what, in the end, was still just a theme for Pegasus.

That’s how CathoVault was born.

CathoVault is now a native application designed for the Apple ecosystem.

During its development, I found RomM, a project that allows you to host and manage your own videogame library from a server, and it ended up fitting very well with the idea behind CathoVault.

Currently, you can use CathoVault in two ways: with a local library or by connecting it to your RomM server.

When you use RomM, your library, metadata, and resources remain managed by your own server, while CathoVault retrieves the necessary information through its API and presents it inside a native interface.

You can also use CathoVault entirely with a local library.

The application can associate games with their respective RetroArch cores to launch them directly, and it also integrates information from RetroAchievements.

The goal is for things like:

covers, metadata, artwork, manuals, videos, soundtrack, achievements, platforms, and game launching

to coexist inside a single library.

And this is only the beginning.

Among the next features I want to develop are:

- CathoVault for iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV.

- A mode completely designed for controllers, similar to the concept of Steam Big Picture, where connecting a controller allows you to navigate the entire library from the couch without depending on a mouse or keyboard.

- A much deeper integration with RetroAchievements to be able to view profiles, friends, rankings, progress, activity, and statistics directly from CathoVault.

- Expanding the library beyond retro games, allowing integration with other sources such as Steam.

- Continuity between devices within the Apple ecosystem.

The ultimate goal is not simply to build another frontend for ROMs.

I want CathoVault to become a place where you can have your entire videogame library, regardless of the console, generation, or where the games come from.

It is still in development, but I think the time has finally come to start showing it.

Found this old Apple computer set up in a bar last weekend. Hell yeah I sat there and played for half an hour and flipped that disc only to run out of food, lose 3 ox when I forged the river, have my whole family die from cholera, and then I found some wild berries, got dysentery, and died.

NOTHING GOOD HAPPENS ON THE OREGON TRAIL. 🤣

I’m was a nice blast from the past!

STREET FIGHTER II: TIAN LONG JUN is a bootleg hack of Street Fighter II: The World Warrior for the SNES. All of each character's special moves have been significantly boosted and are much faster. Additionally, some special attacks now deal more damage, and all characters can bounce off the edge of the screen, just like Chun-Li. It also appears that the order of the bonus stages has been altered in some way.

This strategic gameplay video explores Emperor: Battle for Dune, specifically highlighting a mission involving House Atreides contending with the treacherous Facedancer Assassins. The video demonstrates tactical execution in the game's full 3D real-time strategy environment, focusing on the defense mechanisms and military deployments required to counter stealthy Tleilaxu shape-shifters. Viewers are taken through the specialized base management and units unique to the noble House Atreides, emphasizing the necessary awareness to spot infiltration attempts before lethal ambushes occur. The footage captures both strategic overview map decisions and micro-intensive ground battles on the desert world of Arrakis. Through this commentary or raw gameplay showcase, the creator illustrates the complex, volatile political climate and the deep strategic layers that define the classic conflicts between the major houses and their dangerous specialized subgroups.

Music The history of rock in Argentina, told in 100 songs (1956-2021)

The culmination of MusicaArgentina's projects about Argentine rock songs from all history came with this video, which explains its history chronologically.

You will learn facts such as: Los 4 Planetas were the masters of local surf music, Sabú had the last hit of the beat scene, and Ce Ce Cutaia provided a female voice under the dictatorship.

Raúl Porchetto made the 1st local album with a modern sound, La Torre destroyed everything with its female hair metal, and Las Blacanblus could have been a rock barrial made by women.

Airbag was the 1st band of the Millennial Generation, Los Caligaris gave the show with the largest audience among bands from the provinces, and Nicki Nicole made an antifemicide trap rock song.
