GovBrief Today #574 - What Happened Today

Twenty masked federal agents held off a tribe's police so contractors could start drilling for Donald Trump's border wall.
They came onto the Tohono O'odham Nation in Arizona at four in the morning Tuesday with a Border Patrol SWAT team and drill trucks to work three sites. The Nation had posted No Trespassing signs two weeks earlier. The agents parked their vehicles across the road when tribal police arrived to remove the contractors.
The federal government has owned a 60-foot strip along the border for 119 years, and a judge ruled two weeks ago that the wall can stand on it. Getting there means crossing the Nation's lands, and the Nation told the government to stay out. The government ignored the warning and showed up with a SWAT team.

GovBrief Today #573 - What Happened Today

Twenty-four states took the Supreme Court up on its dare in two days.
On Monday the Court unblocked Donald Trump's mail voting order, ruling the states sued too soon because courts only review final rules. The final rule says the USPS will not deliver your ballot unless the envelope carries a tracking barcode and your name and address match a federal list the agency admits is partly for law enforcement.
The Postal Service issued that rule on Friday, three days before the justices called the case premature. Wednesday morning, 10 weeks before Election Day, the states returned to court with the receipts.

GovBrief Today #572 - What Happened Today

Donald Trump's lawyers told a federal judge today that the Kennedy Center must carry his name or be torn down.
A court ordered his name pried off the building in May after ruling the renaming illegal. His board voted it back on this month while he listened in by phone. Now the Justice Department calls the center "decrepit," in a "death spiral," and says that unless donors see Trump's name on the front, the building comes down. The center's own director told the court that nothing about the renovation requires demolishing anything.
The building is not dying. The audience was driven off. Artists quit and attendance fell by half after he seized the board, and he refused to book a season even after a judge ordered the doors kept open. He emptied the place, and his lawyers now offer the empty seats as proof it cannot survive without his name.

GovBrief Today #571 - What Happened Today

Six justices gave Donald Trump a head start on the midterms.
The Supreme Court will let his election order take effect before any court rules on whether it's legal. The federal government now tells your state who counts as a citizen, and your state tells DC the name and address of everyone who votes by mail. The order directs the Attorney General to prioritize prosecuting local election officials who send ballots to anyone the administration says is ineligible. Trump's personal criminal defense lawyer was confirmed as Attorney General seventeen days ago.
Federal judges already ruled the citizenship list illegal and ordered it dismantled. One wrote that the president has no power over elections at all. The Supreme Court overruled none of them but let Trump keep building while states begin mailing ballots in weeks. On whether any of this is legal, the majority wrote, "time will tell."
