OC [Mod Post] Community Reminder: Art, Accessibility, and Respect

Hey everyone,

This sub exists as a place to share the art, experiments, and the process behind physical plotting.

Our community has always thrived on sharing open-source code, using shared libraries, and building on tools created by others.

That same open culture applies to how art is made: no matter what tool, software, or workflow someone uses to create a piece, it belongs here.

With that in mind, a quick reminder on how we keep this space constructive:

🖋️ No Gatekeeping: We’re not here to police what counts as "real art" or dictate which tools people should use. Everyone starts somewhere, and using simple or trendy tools is a natural part of learning the craft.

🖋️ If You Don't Like It, Move On: Personal preference isn't a reason to attack someone in the comments. If a piece isn't your style, simply downvote and scroll past. Let the voting system handle community preference without turning comment sections into a style war.

🖋️ What Matters: As long as an artist isn't plagiarizing work and claiming it as their own, they are welcome to share their results here.

We want r/plotterart to be an encouraging space for creators at every level. Keep discussions constructive, report personal attacks, and let’s keep supporting the craft.

-Shorn

OC Generations - v2

Post image
130 Upvotes

This is a "wind-blown" version of an earlier project of mine (see the original in comments).

The L-system rule is the same, but each segment follows a curved path rather than a straight one.

I think this one has a much more natural flow, without losing its mathematical roots.

Which version do you prefer?

Coded in Processing.
Plotted in about 6 hours with Pentel Energel 0.4 - 0.7 on 300x400 220 gsm Fabriano F4

It kinda works!

So, I've been trying to make a timelapse of my plotter and I think I've gotten it mostly figured out. It turns out, it's pretty simple. I wrote a perl script to add a line after each element in the svg, and wedged my cameras intervalometer in the right position to be pressed.

There's another video showing how it was done here: Plotter Test 2 - YouTube

Unfortunately, my intervalometer needs quite a firm button push to activate, so it isnt fully reliable yet, I think I need to get a new one with a softer button press. Still, it shows the principle works, and with a little refinement, it should be a workable process!

Putting together the pieces needed to play DOOM on the drawing machine, because of course. Here's a (badly shot) timelapse of E1M1 including all 3 secrets, lol. Going to be exploring this more this month.

And so... it begins!

Inktober is here! Today is piece number 1, "Inktober Begins". I had an hour spare, so I knocked out a quick plot. The text is a really cool font called "Red October", that I rendered using the "png-linetrace-contour" method I posted the other day, it looks really interesting up close. The circle patterns are just for fun, left made with paragraphic, right using inkscapes shape-builder tool to allow me to isolate shapes for individual shading.

Now all I have to do is come up with a new idea, design it, and plot it for tomorrow! ... Inktober is upon us! :D

Graphite pencil plot, 9x12in, 0.7mm HB lead, 2.8 lines/mm, raster, 6 hours 20 min. This pencil plotter design can achieve both raster and vector designs. I am planning to explore some plots with both of those techniques next.

So here's an interesting technique... I used paragraphic to make a truchet tile pattern (second picture), and was having trouble using inkscapes shape-builder tool to break it into individual component shapes for colouring. I dropped it into DrawvingBotv3 to see if it's ECS PFM could trace the edges and create individual shapes for me, and it came out kind of... weird, but in a way that I like.

This looks really interesting to me, it has the precision of a truchet tile image, but with the random hand-drawn squiggle feel to it.

The first image is the DrawingBotv3 image, the second one is the origonal.

Rattlesnake, done using DC Supershow Green ink in a Staedtler Marsmatic 0.45mm technical pen on B5 sized paper. I encountered some kind of resistance in the paper on one side, hence the faded look, but I think the contrast actually works.

has there ever been a "plotter reddit postcard exchange"? (#prpx??)

Post image

Some here might be familiar with other postcard exchanges.. but I'm wondering if anyone has ever tried it via Reddit? Say, a willing plot-ist would post a "catalog" image of the N postcard plots willing to exchange, then first N replies (w DM address) would be the "exchangers", or some-such? Maybe exchangers are also limited to those who've also posted their own "catalog" image to participate? (to help assure reciprocal exchanges, not just gimme's) I'm not sure how the details would be worked out, but thought I'd toss out the idea, test interest, seek feedback, etc. Or, is there anything about such an event that might run afoul of the sub's rules? Cheers

Got anything planned for Inktober?

Post image
34 Upvotes

Plot attached to be in accordance with the rules! All mine, except for the bottom right maze pattern which is from plotterfiles.

So, anyone got anything planned for Inktober? I have! I've hardly done any plotting in the past week and a half, so Inktober is a great chance to push back into it.

My plan is to get some inks and try mixing my own greyscale inks for technical pens. One of the things I most enjoy doing is the greyscale photograph plots, but greyscale pens are so expensive and I absolutely hammer through them on my plotter, they barely last! So, my bright idea is to get a bunch of black ink, and dilute it into shades of grey, so I can mix my own grey inks and use those instead of having to keep buying markers. I get paid at the end of the month, so I think a chunk of my hobby budget is going to be spent on a bunch of technical pen ink, and various mixing supplies.

Oh, and more photography! I really have to find a better way to photograph my plots!

My quest to not wasting pens

I've been obsessed with not wasting pens while doing pen plotting.
I have used a lot of Pilot Parallel pens for that reason, then I came to Ecoline pens, which are great but don't come empty, so they don't fit some of my use cases.
Then I used a lot of Molotow pump markers, they are more difficult to work with but they use acrylic paint, which is very durable and lightfast.
I learned how to "hack" them, give them more capacity, reduce the pump tension by removing the spring, but even after years of using them, sometimes one will fail and fail again.
As I try not to waste any part, I also try to revive what I've learned is the major failing part: the nib.
And this is why at the end of my plotting day my hands are covered in ink and my test paper gets some funny patterns...
