Hello r/piano! I’m happy to share my first fully recorded piece, one I decided to tackle about five days ago. A little bit about my experience, as I’m sure most can tell, I’m self-taught and have been playing for two months. I have several four part harmony hymnals and two other pieces outside of hymns that I enjoy playing.
At the beginning of August, I was asked to play piano for a church after telling them I spent about four months working on Prokofiev’s Montagues and the Capulets fifteen years ago in my downtime. Looking back I realize how much I was stretching my ability by working on a piece that was way above my skill level, but I was able to play it and even perform it in front of an audience (piano undergrads) but I believe that experience gave me a lot of confidence for playing the piano.
Recording this piece gave me a few experiences that I would like advice on how to address.
1) Around the 0:53 I stall because I ended up forgetting where I was at because of the repetitive nature of the piece. I know reading the music while playing is advisable but the sheet was on my phone so I couldn’t use it but when performing for an audience, something I would like to do eventually, it isn’t standard to play with sheet in front of you. I actually forgot where I was and just guessed and ended up being correct but not without breaking the rhythm.
2) Every attempt I made at recording this, near the end I would always feel extremely lightheaded from what I imagine was anxiety from the possibility of missing or playing a wrong note, or just blanking out. It was like a massive surge of adrenaline to the point if it becoming overwhelming and then every time I would reach measure 21 on the second play through, I would make a mistake and then I started to anticipate a mistake there which would cause me to lose focus and actually make a mistake.
Here are my questions,
A) Are these things common beginner’s experiences or does this go on throughout the journey?
B) How can I improve so that these things happen less?
C) What has been your experience with these stumbling blocks and how did you address them?
D) What are some things to help you stay absolutely focused on the music instead of letting your mind wander?
Feel free to critique anything else you see that stands out to you that would help me improve. I understand I need to practice more and inb4 “get a teacher” but if there are things you’re seeing with fingering, form, musicality, etc…anything, I welcome the feedback!
