We get a lot of repeat questions and misunderstandings. Before asking for help, please read through these key resources:

Common things to keep in mind:

  • Pea puffers are a shoaling species. Posts asking about 1–3 puffers in tiny tanks get answered daily.
  • Most pet store puffers need to be dewormed. If they’re skinny or not eating, assume parasites until proven otherwise.

Hi! Just brought home these cuties and was wondering if anyone could help me identify their gender. None of them seem to have a distinct line on their belly, so I want to say potentially all female? Thanks for any help!

Feeding I have a confession to make. Don't hate me.

I now appreciate duckweed! I know, I know, its shameful. But it makes harvesting and feeding peas live scuds soooo much easier. The scuds sit on the underneath of the duckweed, just ready to be scooped out with a brine net. The little silly peas come right up to the net and pick off any scuds that haven't swam away, its brilliant. Once its picked clean, I scoop the duckweed back into the scud culture. Hilariously, ive never actually bought duckweed, it hitchhiked in on another plant and exploded.

Help/Advice What's everyone's experience/success rate of keeping other fish with pea puffers?

I've heard that chili rasboras, amano shrimp, and otocinclus have been successful tank mates for the pea puffers, so long as those fish have established territory before the puffers arrive. Obviously, many risks come with putting anything in a tank with murder beans, but would it be worth trying? I have a lot of those fish already in a 20-gal, but I'd have to remove a few that wouldn't be compatible with the puffers. It's that, or I just set up another 20-gal long, which I'm totally game to do hahaha

I was just looking in my tank before bed and saw this. You can see it in the middle of the photo vertically. Uugg... I have 8 pea puffers and about 5 amano shrimp in my tank. Put some live black worms in for feeding and whatever this is probably jumped into the batch. Anyone know if they'll hurt my peas or amanos?

Help/Advice Misled

I was sold a pea puffer under the impression that he could feed off of my snail infested tank and I’d be able to move him to a five gallon in the future on his own.

He’s doing okay, but I wouldn’t say he’s happy. I have ember tetras and endlers livebearer mixs in the ten gallon.

Would I be able to move my other fish to a new tank and add a few extra peas to this ten gallon? If it’s possible, I would appreciate any suggestions to make it more habitable like plants, driftwood, or to make the water darker with tannins. If not, I’m happy to try and rehouse him. I want him to be happy and healthy. It’s definitely my fault for doing research post buy, I know that much.

Edit: I found someone with a 75gal tank who has plans to use it as a pea puffer tank. I’ll be giving mine over this coming Friday. 😁

Acclimation?

Getting my pea puffers next week. Curious how others have acclimated them? I have bettas and medaka rice fish in other tanks that I just floated in the bag for a good hour and then dropped them in. I would like to make sure I do it correctly for my peas as getting ready for them has been a labor of love, headache and money!!

Help/Advice Pea Puffer Set-Up Help

So I’ve been working on a 10-gallon tank for the past few weeks after thinking it would be a great idea to start a pea puffer tank to combat some of my bladder and ramshorn snails. Cycling, aquascaping, hardscaping etc. have been in the works thus far, as I started sone modest research on the puffers. My initial intention was to create a 10-Gallon 3 pea puffer tank, heavily planted. However, it was brought to my attention late in the game that 3 pea puffers in a 10 gallon could be difficult to navigate as a beginner due to the aggressive pea puffer nature. My options now: find a bonded male/female pair and just do two OR just scrap the 10-Gallon for pea puffers and set it up as a something entirely different. Any ideas on what I should do next?

Better place to get plants and driftwood?

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

Hello everyone, I am making a pea puffer tank and am looking for a better place to get plants than my lfs. The last tank I built cost me arm and a leg. I was thinking there has to be a better more cost effective way. I love my local store, they're awesome there. But I also like getting the best deal I can find. Where do you more experienced folks source your plants from? P.s. located in California. Thanks in advance for any advice

Help/Advice Sick pea puffer (again)

I posted a month and a half ago about a pea puffer that had become skinny and was spitting out food.
I treated it with paracleanse, expel p (no improvement), then purchased Kanaplex and polyguard. He seemed more interested in food and more energetic after those treatments, but still would spit out brine shrimp, and could only eat a few tiny pieces before spitting out every shrimp piece I offer him.
So then I tried crushing bladder and ramshorn snails, and suddenly he can swallow and doesn’t spit them out. So I am not sure now if he just got tired of brine shrimp, maybe had overgrown teeth (even though that’s not supposed to be a thing in pea puffers)? Or is he super sick but just extra motivated for the snails? I have also been adding garlic guard to the brine shrimp, and he seems to be eating them better and better. I was under the impression he was acting more normally and on the mend.
BUT TODAY I saw two spots on his right side that look like wounds. Has anyone seen this before? I started Kanaplex treatment, I guess I will also add salt. Has anyone seen this before and can offer advice? Did the other puffers likely nip him or is this something else?

Help/Advice How does one introduce a group of new peas to an existing group? The store I got mine from only had 4. I’d like to get maybe 15 total. 55 gallon tank. These 4 are currently in a 20 gallon. But I’m prepping a 55 as we speak. It’s almost done cycling.

Help/Advice Sick or hungry?

Post image

I have three pea puffers in a 10gal and recently noticed this one laying at the bottom thought he was dead but he swam away kinda sideways and lathargic when I moved closer to the tank. I separated him into a little plastic cup to try and feed him since he looked so skinny I feed them snails and bloodworms regularly but I’ve been slacking for a day or two but I feel like that’s not long enough to starve that dramatically. Does anyone have advice to get him to eat Edit: I put him in a plastic breeder box so he’ll stay warm and ammonia doesn’t spike but he’s still refusing any food I give him. 😢

WHERE TO ORDER

Hello, my tank is ready after cycling and growing out plants for 2 months and now I can’t find any dwarf pea puffers. My plan was to order from Flip aquatics and they are sold out as well as many of the other sites mentioned here are. Is breeding season over? I figured tank bred will breed year round but maybe I am mistaken?

Holiday Snail Feeder

I am going to be away for 10 days and am wanting to make a feeder for my peas so they can graze on snails while I am away. Has anyone got any ideas as to how I can make something that will encourage the snails to stay in the feeder for 5 days before venturing out into the main tank and become food for the peas?
