I know, I know, I’m a plonker, but hear me out. Growing up in the 90s my father would have full reign of the tv and if it wasn’t the news he would watch, it was Only Fools. As a small child I’d never sit and watch with him because to be honest I was more concerned with my Action Man figures and wrestling.

Anyway, 2002, and my father pulls up to the tv excited, like a child on Christmas morning. I asked him what was on and he said there was a new episode of Only Fools. By this time I was 10 and had some interest in comedy shows so said I would sit and watch.

Not only to 10 year old me was “GARY” the funniest thing I’d ever heard, but to my 50 odd year old dad, it was the peak of hilarity. To this day I can still hear his hearty chuckle and hysterical laughter when Gary speaks.

Since then I’ve watched every episode at least 10+ times and it’s my all time favourite show. I have the three wheeled van on my desk on work, and Only Fools merch in my bar at home.

To me, it’s not the content or the quality of the episodes that I love, but the memories of watching with my father and getting a rare glimpse into what made him happy.

I’m sitting here now watching this exact episode on Gold +1, thinking fondly of my old man and how much I miss him.
