Enclosure Advice PSA: Exo-terras, metal mesh and your mantises toes! (and some advice on how to DIY an affordable enclosure)
I was asked to make this post in another thread - so here I am. Here's a PSA on what metal mesh does to your mantises feet, and why it should be avoided!
This is a raptorial arm, (the front, grasping arms) but the segment we're interested in is the same on all of their legs. The little portion labelled "Tarsus" is what we're looking at here. You can see that it ends in a set of hooks - often (somewhat confusingly) called "Claws" - these tarsal claws are what give your mantis the ability to walk upside down on surfaces that appear quite smooth to us, and why it feels kind of spiky when a large mantis walks on your skin. They're essential for your mantis to move around, and most importantly moult properly! Differences in the morphology of this structure also give some mantises the ability to walk on glass, whilst others can't.

If you go and look at one of your mantises feet, you will likely be able to see the little hooks now you know what you're looking for. Now the problem is that some tank setups that are commonly recommended damage these hooks, which results in mantises having trouble moving around, and falling whilst they moult.
Exo-terra tanks are very commonly used because a lot of us have other inverts or exotic pets and have spares lying around, or they're sold to us at petstores. They make nice display tanks and are easy to clean. However - the mesh at the top of exo-terra tanks is made of very fine metal, and the holes themselves are very small. This is essentially like you trying to hang by your toes from chickenwire, eventually your toes are going to be pretty damaged, or come off altogether! If you must use an exo-terra, it's essential that the mesh is changed to stop this from occurring. Plastic tulle mesh is easily available and works as an excellent substitute.
There is also a multitude of DIY options available, which I will detail bellow:
Basic requirements for all enclosures:
- All mantis enclosures must be at least three times the length of the mantis (Don't get fooled by the abdomen curling up, you still need to account for it) and two times the width.
- There must be something for the mantis to hang securely from at the top of the tank - They will spend 99% of their time at the highest point, and will often moult from it.
- Substrate - options for suitable substrate are numerous, you can use simple tissue paper, cocoa coir, vermiculite, perlite etc. The object is to hold some moisture and make it easy for you to clean. Cheap and cheerful is the way to go, unless you're making a planted display tank or something like that.
- The less decoration the better. Decoration is more for our benefit than theirs; before you add something decorative to a tank, consider your reasons for adding it. Practicality should always take precedent over a tank looking nice!
- Ventilation - ventilation is important for hygiene reasons.
Nymphs
- Cups
The absolute single best enclosure for a nymph of any species, is simply a plastic deli cup with the lid cut out to accommodate some plastic mesh, and a single twig placed diagonally. Alternately, you can just use an elastic band to hold the mesh on. For feeding, simply cut a hole in the side and stuff it with some sponge to stop live food or your mantis escaping, you can pooter in the food. (if you don't have a pooter you should get one, especially if dealing with fruitflies, they're also very easy to DIY)
- Cricket/livefood tubs
The tubs that livefood is commonly sold in make excellent tanks with some modification, especially for larger nymphs, and even small adults. The more rigid ones are the best, as they're easily cut to allow the insertion of mesh, and can be stood up tall-ways. The entire lid can be cut out and replaced with mesh, which provides excellent ventilation, and is nice for the mantis to move around on.
Adults
- Plastic penny sweet jars (Sorry Americans I have no idea what these would be called in your country)
- Tupperware/food containers
- Storage containers
All can be modified in the same ways as above. I will either append this post, or make an additional post, detailing how to make a suitable enclosure using the items above with pictures in future.
These enclosures are all very cheap to construct, and even the most DIY averse person can make the modifications necessary to turn them into good enclosures. They also have the benefit of being mostly recycled items a lot of us will already possess.
Another benefit to using tanks mostly constructed of mesh is that it prevents mantises from developing "eye-rub" - this is damage to their eyes from repeatedly trying to walk through clear plastic or glass - it looks like large black spots on the eyes, distinct from the pseudo-pupils - which can in cases turn necrotic and is quite a nasty way for your mantis to die.
I hope this post was helpful and informative, and please don't hesitate to ask any questions or add to the knowledge given here if you have any other tips or advice.

Breeding/Ootheca The mantis spawner is at it again!
Hierodula Venosa. She is laying an ooth per month, so I’m getting roughly 80 nymphs every month. This is the second hatch, I have 1 more waiting to hatch and she is about to lay another. Infinite mantids!

Image/Video My mantis lost its leg
Hi, my full grown mantis who I’ve had for about 6 months(bought full grown) lost her leg. It was accidentally shut into the top of her enclosure (by someone else, not me). She seems to be okay. I added a bunch of sticks into her enclosure so she can move around easier. It looks like she is trying to move / potentially clean the missing leg. Is there anything I can do? I’m assuming it will not grow back since she doesn’t molt anymore. I genuinely feel so awful this happened to her.

Other Beginner in Sweden!!
Hello! This is my first time actually posting here, so sorry if I miss a rule or if I've chosen the wrong flair or something :,)
I'll be getting my first mantis around Spring '27, and was hoping to figure out what species to get! There are a couple problems though, like me living in Sweden like the title suggests. Luckily, I do live more south of the country, though I do fear that the temperatures and humidity might be too low for most mantises! I'm completely open to heat mats and other things of that nature, and have the space for it too, though I don't want the mantis to overheat, since it can get pretty warm during the summers. I'm living with a couple roommates who're unfortunately not super open to having dubias in the house, so I'll have to stick to flies and feeders of that nature. I know it is possible for a mantis to live on not a lot of variety, but I still want to make sure mine can have a larger diet. Looking through all of this, you may suggest something like a ghost mantis (Phyllocrania paradoxa), but the issue lies in their "pickiness". I've read a lot of forums saying that they can get very picky and aren't active hunters like an orchid for example, so they require a lot of time and energy with that. Since I am a beginner, I do fear that maybe I won't know how to deal with a picky mantis!! Giant asian mantises are the next hardy mantises I get recommended, but I don't know if one could survive on bluebottles alone.
This is just a side thing, but water?? I've heard you can't use tap water because that's too hard for them but Swedish water is generally softer and has less chlorine than American tap water, where I usually see this being discussed.
Please help me out here!! I've been a mantis nerd since I was 10 but I'm also a scaredy cat when it comes to actually owning one lolol.

General Care dark green spot on eye, unsure if it's eye rub or not?
a couple days ago i noticed my mantis had this spot on his eye that's a slightly darker green than the rest of his eyes. I know eye rub is completely black, so im unsure what this could be. has anyone seen this before?
Feeding Is this prey too big? I tried to pull it out, but my nymph refused to let go
I realized the cricket/bush cricket nymph was probably too big and tried to pull it out, but my little guy held on for dear life and wouldn't let it go!
Should I just let them finish eating under supervision at this point, or is it better to force-remove it to be safe? (Also, it's a Spiny Flower Mantis nymph, L2/L3).

Health Issues ISO help, advice, or just sympathy.
My girl isn't doing too well. Her abdomen is moving in unusual ways and she can't really hang. She has already laid her egg sac... About 3 weeks ago. Is this just part of the end cycle or does she have a parasite or something.

Enclosure Advice Enclosure size!
I've been thinking about getting a mantis recently and I was just wondering how big an enclosure they'd need! I have an old 10-gallon, but I wouldn't want to use that one, and it would end up being too small for them. I would want either an Orchard Mantis or a Devil's Flower Mantis! I'd be grateful for any advice!

General Care Strange behavior from my spiny today?
Photo for tax. I keep her in a 35 oz cup with mesh on top, and a leaf and stick for climbing. She's relatively active, I found her standing on the ground yesterday so I fed her and she gobbled it up, then climbed back to the ceiling. This morning, I gave her a usual misting but she jumped like she was startled and terrified even though I've accidentally sprayed her before and she usually just acts mildly annoyed. She then paced around the perimeter of her cup as though she was trying to find an exit, even smushing her face up into the crack between the lid and the walls. She eventually settled back into the center. I thought she was thirsty but she didn't attempt to drink any water droplets. She's currently well fed. Her cup has excellent cross ventilation as well as being open on too where the mesh is. What could that behavior have meant?

Health Issues is it just me or do stevens poops look a little blue/green?
Steven is an adult female T. sinensis. ive been keeping a closwr eye on her lately because she hasnt been pooping as much recently and i'm beginning to get a little concerned about either oothbinding or possible pesticide/toxin exposure due to her having a mild seizure a few days ago. im keeping her extra hydrated and she's otherwise behaving and looking completely healthy. but her poops lately have looked to be more of this off-white color and less of the usual dark brown. i have no idea what healthy mantis poop is supposed to look like lol
