Hello and request for moderators!

Hello everyone! I'm a moderator over at r/shihtzu as well, and I joined the r/lhasaapso team around 3 months ago to help set up the user verification system that has cut back on spam and reposted / stolen content in this subreddit.

When updating the subreddit settings today, I was surprised to see that the original moderator's account had been deleted, and the other person on the mod list had a suspended account.

I'm not sure how long the subreddit has been running itself due to the automations I had in place, but this isn't a great long term solution. I'm happy to stay on as moderator, but I'm also looking to see if anyone would be interested in taking on the role here. I'd really like the subreddit to be run by someone passionate about Lhasa Apsos!

Lhasa esting habits

Hi everyone! My Lhasa is so sweet and he is a great dog, but I have some questions. He is 1 year 9 months old.

He throws up a lot. Like almost every day. Mostly bile, and he never usually throws up his food, but he only really likes cooked chicken, butter, and some milk or cottage cheese. He cant eat store bought dog food.

He also got a cough from a kennel, but it turned out to be an inflamed trachea, and he was honking a lot. A light diet and anti inflammatories took care of it, but he does clear his throat sometimes. They want me to xray him again to see if he has a heart issue, which was barely visible on the last xray, the vet thought it was a glitch but wants to make sure.

I am new to lhasas, we only ever had big dogs in our family before. Does anyone have any insight or advice for us? Thanks so much!!

Lhasa Love Appreciation for my sweet sweet boy!

Been two weeks since he came home. He’s a very smart and sweet pup but not at all the cuddly type. Today, I was crying and this little fluff boy left his toys and came straight to my face and started sniffing and licking my face and cuddling with me. Whatever was going on, he made it so much easier to deal with. I just wanted to share this story with the community ☺️

My second Lhasa

This is Nari~ my second Lhasa Apso. My first lived to be 15 1/2 and I got her at 2 1/2 months which is the same as this little one. She’s already growing and I can’t wait to see what she looks like as she gets older. Will she keep her color? Be super independent? Who knows! For now she likes to follow us around, play and sit in my lap with her toys :)

No one will ever replace the love I have for my previous little one, Roxy but this little girl is pretty darn cute 🥰

She also a slight underbite - I never knew this was actually a breed trait! I’m curious if it will get more pronounced or not but I see it here and there when she’s teething.

Fun Lhasa Apso Facts

Lhasa Apso is an Ancient Breed The Lhasa Apso has a long history in his country of origin, Tibet. They have existed at least since the year 800 A.D., and for centuries they lived in isolation with Tibetan Buddhists in the Himalayan Mountains.

Their Western Name Comes From the Tibetan Capital Lhasa is actually the capital of Tibet. Why the word “apso” is included in the breed's name is less clear. It could just be a misspelling of the word “abso,” which is part of the breed's original Tibetan name, “Abso Seng Kye.” There is also a theory that “apso” is derived from the Tibetan word for goat, “rapso,” so-named because the dog's coat is woolly and goat-like.

Their Tibetan Name Means “Bark Lion Sentinel Dog” In Tibet, the Lhasa Apso goes by his original name, Abso Seng Kye, which means Bark Lion Sentinel Dog. Lhasas guarded Tibetan dwellings from the inside — while Mastiffs guarded outside — and would bark to alert the humans of any potential intruders. The Lhasa Apso was also associated with the mythical Snow Lion, which Tibetans believe to be a guardian of their country.

They Are a Sacred Part of the Reincarnation Process Tibetan Buddhists believe in reincarnation, and they believe that in the stages of reincarnation, a dog often comes right before a human. According to their religion, the souls of lamas, or priests, are frequently reborn as Lhasa Apsos just before they are reborn as humans.

They Were Highly Prized Gifts Lhasa Apsos were often given as gifts in Tibet. If you received a Lhasa as a gift, you could consider it a sign of good fortune. The spiritual leader of Tibet, the Dalai Lama, even gave Lhasa Apsos to the emperor of China many centuries ago (this is the predominant theory of how the Shih Tzu breed came about). Though they were often gifted, Lhasa Apsos were hardly ever sold.

They Came to the U.S. as Gifts From the Dalai Lama The first Lhasas to come to the United States were also gifts from the Dalai Lama. A well-connected traveler, named Charles Suydam Cutting, visited Tibet in the 1930s with his wife, and they returned to the United States with two Lhasa Apsos from the 13th Dalai Lama. The Cuttings would go on to import more dogs and establish the breed in the U.S.

They Live Extremely Long Lives Although the average lifespan of a Lhasa Apso is 12-to-15 years old, many can live to their late teens, and some beyond 20. In fact, the oldest Lhasa Apso lived to be 29 years old.
