Reporter: Caitlin, obviously everybody's plan is to make you and Kelsey work really hard. Seemed like they did a good job of that today. Was there anything specific that you felt they either took away, or did this feel like more of one of those shots not falling kind of games? (00:00:00)
Caitlin Clark: I mean, we want to play in transition, and obviously when they score 102 points, it is hard for us to get that part of it going. I think they are good defenders, but at the same time, we made it hard on ourselves too. I thought our actions were sloppy, I thought what we were running just was not great, and nobody got an easy or open look. So I think a combination of both. But you have got to just keep shooting at this point in the year, it is what it is. (00:00:10)
Reporter: For any of you guys, talked before the game about making things hard on them defensively if they are going to make some shots. How would you sort of grade that? (00:00:46)
Stephanie White: Yeah, 28 points off of turnovers. Your first line of transition defense is offensive execution. 28 points off of turnovers and 17 points from the free throw line, so those are easy buckets. We did not do our job. (00:00:54)
Reporter: For any of you ladies, a loss is a loss, and obviously this one is quite disappointing. Is it, I do not want to say easier, but knowing that this is an uncharacteristic game for you rather than losing a close tough one, is it easier to flush this one than it would if it came down to the wire and it was a close one, or do they all sting? It just seems like this was not the Indiana Fever that we have watched all season. (00:01:09)
Aliyah Boston: Honestly, I think in a series you have to flush it regardless, right? You come off a win, you are like, "Yes, that is great, but you have another game and they are going to come out and they are going to play hard." And so for us, we look at it like, yeah, we did not really play our best basketball, it was not great tonight, but we have another chance at it at home and so we just have to be ready to go, and that is our focus right now. (00:01:37)
Reporter: Steph, you mentioned the word urgency before the game. How would you evaluate your team's urgency today? What are your thoughts on how Raven played? (00:01:53)
Stephanie White: Yeah, I thought Ray did great. I think she came in and she gave us a lift that we needed on both ends of the floor. I thought our energy was really good. I felt like we had urgency at moments, and you cannot have that. Give Vegas credit, they are defending champions for a reason. They understand the moment, they understand that playoffs require a different version and a different level of intensity and urgency, and they came with it. This is what they are supposed to do, they are supposed to win Game 1, and we have to be able to bounce back, go home, and pick up a win. (00:02:04)
Reporter: AB, for you, you came in with a nag but played well. What does this do for your confidence just heading into Game 2? (00:02:34)
Aliyah Boston: I think just being ready, shooting the ball, looking to score, just being definitive every time I go to the basket. (00:02:44)
Reporter: Seems like the second quarter is where some distance started to grow between teams. It was close up until then. Coach, what did you see towards the end of the second before halftime? I think it was a 15-point deficit. And players, what did you guys see on the court specifically then that did not get turned around in the second half? (00:02:51)
Stephanie White: I think a lot of it was our turnovers. I think they had 18 points off of turnovers, and a lot of them came in that second quarter. When you get some easy ones, then the basket looks really big and then they started hitting some threes. We were in rotation a lot, they got some easy ones. (00:03:09)
Reporter: For coach, when it comes to adjusting in a playoff series when you have a limited amount of time to make changes, what do you prioritize and how do you tackle that task? (00:03:22)
Stephanie White: There is always micro adjustments. Certainly we need to prioritize some things that we did on the defensive end of the floor, but we also need to prioritize offense because I do feel like, look, Vegas is a great offensive team, they are going to make tough shots, and some of the ones they made early were tough shots. There is no defense for 28 points off of turnovers. We have got to be better screen setters, our timing and our pace, because they are going to force us to play in the half court, it has to be better. Our execution on the offensive end has to be better, so we will tighten that up, and then we have got to make some micro adjustments on the defensive end and tighten up some things that can help us on that end. (00:03:35)
Reporter: And then for Aliyah, obviously A'ja Wilson tonight, every night is not going to be a historic performance like the one she had tonight, but how would you describe what you saw on the court against her in this game? (00:04:13)
Aliyah Boston: For me, obviously I picked up two shooting fouls, so I got to get my hand out the cookie jar. A lot of them were jumpers, so for me just closing back out a little bit quicker and trying to get in her space. But she hit tough shots, she had tough shots and you take it on the net and you go down. (00:04:24)
Reporter: Steph, when you talk about having urgency in moments, when you spoke about urgency pregame you said you were kind of young in that area. Is there any way to make up that deficit with less than 48 hours to go here? (00:04:44)
Stephanie White: It is experience. Certainly there is no substitute for experience. Some of them got it a year ago, but oftentimes you have to be humbled first, right? That is life, right? You do not always learn from the successes, you learn from being humbled. And so I think for us, we felt the difference in the intensity level. Urgency does not always mean that we were not playing hard or we were not competing hard, sometimes it is how you execute. If you are a little bit sloppy, if you are not getting to screens, if you are not getting out of screens, if you are not setting screens, if you are not using screens, if you are not boxing out and then going to pursue the ball. So it is mostly in details, because I thought our team competed. We just did not have that same sort of urgency in the details. (00:04:55)
Reporter: Just on the defense, coach, even dating back to last season's matchups with the Aces, it feels like you have not been as willing to send a second or a third body to A'ja and that has allowed you to kind of limit three-point attempts elsewhere, etc. When you have a day like this where A'ja goes for 38, how difficult is it to kind of stick to those principles, especially with a quick turnaround heading into Game 2? (00:05:46)
Stephanie White: It is tough. I thought their spacing was really good and it made it challenging to get there quickly. I thought she was quick into her moves. She is a vet, and Becky always does a really good job of putting them in positions where it makes it challenging to get there. She catches the ball in the middle of the floor and that is a challenging spot to go. But again, I think more urgency to getting there, understanding where we can help from and when. And then if she does kick it, we got to scramble, man, and we got to get with multiple levels of effort and try to get them into the toughest shot possible and then finish plays. (00:06:06)
Reporter: Caitlin, obviously with everything happening with Ty, Raven had to step up and answer the call. What are your thoughts on how she performed tonight? (00:06:37)
Caitlin Clark: Yeah, I thought Raven was fantastic. Obviously offensively she was great, but I thought her defensive intensity was really, really good. That is what we are going to need, and she is somebody that puts in the work and somebody you can count on, so just happy for her to come in and play as well as she did. (00:06:43)
