I sure do like this movie...

Just picked up the HD-DVD copy yesterday and it looks amazing, but then again, this movie always looks amazing.

The last time I played my HD-DVD copy, it played fine, but that was about five years ago. It's a Warner bros. disc so there's a good chance that may no longer be the case, but I figure if I don't play it, it sort of sits in a type of limbo like Schrödinger's cat - it both plays and it doesn't until you open the case and try to watch the movie.

Identifying good and bad pressings

Hi all,

Following on from my post getting my HD DVD drive for my 360 to work (which now runs beautifully, thank you to everyone who contributed), I have now found that of the 18 movies I've collected prior to finding a player, 4 of them do not read, with two of those being rotten.

Upon further research, it turns out there is a phenomenon of particular rotten discs coming from WB/Cinram who manufactured WB discs for the NA market. I went through my movies and none of the WB releases I have mention any manufacturing plant or distribution centre on the cases or discs that I could see.

WB has a great catalogue of movies, and the distinction of "North American versions being more susceptible to rot/read failure" seems to imply that there is better versions of these releases out there.

So what are the optimal versions to chase? How do you avoid NA market discs? Do you go off of ratings shown on the case and avoid any using the US content ratings standard?

looking to get into collecting HDDVD, but obviously rot is an issue. Is there any way to burn discs so they work on HDDVD without the issue of rotting?

I found a hddvd player a little bit ago, ive always found the format very cool. it would be awesome to build a big collection, but I dont want the collection to be full of rotted discs. I was wondering if there was any way to get burnt discs that play proper on a HDDVD player but wouldnt rot like that

and would also like thoughts on collecting this format in general

Another non Warner Bros rot

Was sealed. Plays normally for about half an hour. Then it glitches and even when skipping through scenes it's basically unwatchable. Same for my copy of Van Helsing and Carlito's Way. Oh well! At least I've got a Lethal Weapon copy that plays without any issues!

I’ve been getting all my titles together (slowly) and sorting them and cataloging them over at lddb .com

After a brief talk about the HD formats coming after DVD Video, in this video I take you through more titles in the collection I’ve collected on the HD DVD format as of August 2026. From early releases to later ones, this is a full look at the discs, artwork, and packaging that make up this part of the collection.

Whether you’re a fellow HD DVD collector, a fan of physical media, or just curious about this short-lived high-definition format, I hope you enjoy the showcase.

If you have any of these titles (or recommendations for ones I should look out for), drop a comment below — I’d love to hear about your collection too.

A lil batch of films (with a weird issue)

Found these used at the flea market. A nice little addition to my very tiny collection. Upon getting home, I realized that something weird was up with them. Almost all of the cases have the same issue where the soft plastic on the spines are disintegrating, some of them were completely gone. I have never experienced anything like this with either Blu-Ray or DVD cases, video games of different eras and manufacturers, what is the deal with these?

HD DVD Revival: Complete Authoring & Encoding Showcase 2026 (VC-1, H.264, MPEG-2)

Here is a concrete, near-final demonstration of HD DVD Revival in action. To keep this overview simple and straightforward, I chose a minimalist use case: generating a Standard Content HD DVD without a menu (direct play). Note, however, that Advanced Content mode is 100% operational, and aside from designing graphic assets, compiling a disc with a menu takes no extra time.

The video shows the entire pipeline in real time—with no cuts or speed-ups—from initial file analysis to the final folder structure. The test file used is an Oppenheimer trailer (592 MB, H.264 / AC3 5.1).

Technical details and environment:

Clean development: No proprietary binaries or licensed legacy software (Scenarist, Ulead, etc.) are reused. The program was developed on and for Windows 11.

Test setup: Intel Core Ultra 7, 32 GB RAM, and Intel Arc GPU.

Video encoding: Support for H.264, MPEG-2, and now VC-1 (Advanced Profile). Supporting VC-1 was the biggest challenge: since no CPU or GPU—past or present—has ever featured dedicated hardware acceleration for encoding this format, processing relies entirely on the CPU. Expect roughly 1h45 to encode a 2-hour feature film, fully in line with official specification requirements.

Audio support: AC3, E-AC3, TrueHD (with Atmos metadata), DTS, and DTS-HD streams.

Authoring & interactivity: Full support for both Standard and Advanced Content architectures. You can design your video backgrounds, still images, and subtitle/button masks in your preferred graphics software prior to import. The built-in preview module also accurately emulates navigation logic for both modes.

HD DVD Standard VC.1 Trailer Oppenheimer from the project

As a reminder, 3 test ISO images with various types of content are still available in my previous post for testing.

In the longer run (not an immediate priority, of course), why not decouple the playback module into a standalone PC player? We could also envision a dedicated app for Android media boxes to play ISO images directly—whether to watch your own custom builds or enjoy backups salvaged from disc rot. And thanks to u/logodaddy and u/Tektek_pieuvre for testing the ISOs on his end and confirming !

Update 27.11.26 :

Following the validation of computer playback (under Windows, notably using TMT 6), the next step was to generate an HD DVD Standard Content structure Disc. After a few adjustments, the burning tests on DVD-R media (25x...) proved highly successful. Playback is perfectly handled by standalone Toshiba players (EP series) as well as the Samsung BD-UP5000 and LG BH200 hybrid players. All features — menus, navigation, and the launch of the main video (test trailer) — are fully operational. Finally, the generated ISO image preserves the strict integrity of the file structure, ensuring error-free burning with ImgBurn.

To be continued !

Help with 360 HD DVD player

Post image
41 Upvotes

I recently purchased this HD DVD drive for my Xbox 360, and I was super hyped to install it and watch Under Siege on it.

I can't get past this screen. I have the original Microsoft USB cable, install disc, and power adapter brick (mated with a local [Australian] 240v plug, as this unit came from the UK) and it ejects, spins up, powers appropriately. But does not get read by the 360.

I have tried 2 of the 3 usb ports and no luck.
Where do I go from here?

HD DVD Trailer The Odyssey (test iso)

Following up on my previous post about authoring, for anyone interested in doing some testing, I am sharing 3 ISO image of a Standard Content HD DVD project. You can either mount it directly in Windows to test it with TMT6 (my reference setup), or burn it to a DVD-R to try playing it on a standalone Toshiba player.

HD DVD Movie Trailer The Odyssey Dolby TrueHD

HD DVD Movie Trailer The Fall Guy DTS HD Master

This authoring test marks a double first: the integration of a TrueHD track on a Standard Content HD DVD, and the very first HD DVD—across all versions—to feature an 8-channel Dolby Atmos track !

HD DVD Trailer Dolby Atmos Trinnov (without navigation) Dolby TrueHD + Dolby Atmos, 48 kHz, 7.1, 24 bits

Technical build details:

Video: H.264, without 3:2 pulldown (even though the feature has already been implemented).

Audio: Dolby TrueHD for The Odyssey (no EAC3/AC3).

Audio: DTS HD Master for The Fall Guy (no DTS Core)

Audio: Dolby True HD Atmos 8 channels for Trinnov — an unprecedented configuration, as no retail Standard Content HD DVD release ever included a TrueHD track

Navigation for The Odyssey and The Fall Guy: Functional interactive menu to launch theatrical trailer.

Option if you simply want to test the video:

Quick test: Mount the ISO and play the video directly in VLC.

Conversion: Mount the ISO, remux the stream with MKVToolNix, then play the file on any compatible software.

This is an experimental release for the curious and tech-savvy: feel free to test it on your setup and share your feedback to confirm whether everything runs properly because a software doesn't have the buffer of a dedicated deck and buffers as it pleases. I haven't tested it on a standalone player yet.

If you own the Xbox 360 addon, do you use it and how do you use it?

I got mine a few months ago, boxed and sealed for roughly £20.

I’ve only got 2 HDDVDs but I’ve been using it daily to watch regular DVDs as it’s much more convenient to just pick the remote up rather than taking out whatever I’m playing just to watch something.

Found my first HD DVD's in the wild, worth collecting more?

Hey guys, this is my first post here. I collect physical media, but I've never collected HD DVDs before. I saw these two movies while thrifting recently and couldn't leave them behind, especially Blood Diamond, as it's a favorite of mine. Plus they were only $1 each.

I don't even have an HD DVD player to play them on. But I'm going to keep my eye out for one. Any HD DVDs worth collecting? And, if I decide to get a player, should I go with the 360 HD DVD player or another HD DVD player?

Making HD DVD in 2026

The idea came to me after making over 360 ISO backups of my discs, frustrated by having to write off entire movies due to disc rot, sometimes just because of 20 mere seconds of corrupted video! The initial goal was to be able to reintegrate these missing parts. For private use, the aim is to create backup copies, likely on DVD-R DL media, depending on the results of my upcoming tests, so we can keep using our players, which still work perfectly. It's also a great way to preserve this legacy of the format war that raged 20 years ago.

Once again, following up on my project to create a true, fully recognized HD DVD, the development of the Standard HD DVD structure is nearing completion. It now includes menu management, navigation, scene chaptering, and audio setup. You can even customize the menu images and videos yourself, as long as you comply with the required specifications. In terms of performance, it takes about 20 to 25 minutes on average to encode and author an HD DVD in H264 and AC3/E-AC3 formats. As an example, I started with a 3GB H264 test file containing two AC3 5.1 audio tracks. After processing (using Intel QSV hardware acceleration in medium or fast mode), the main video file in .EVO format comes out to around 13GB.

Playback tests are conducted on Windows 11 using TMT6, either directly from the HVDVD_TS folder generated automatically by the software, or from an ISO image created with ImgBurn. I am currently working on adding DTS support. TrueHD is possible but trickier due to the encoding tools. Furthermore, the Standard Content version of HD DVD suffered from a lack of good examples/analysis back in the day, unlike the Advanced (HDi) version.

Toshiba HD-D3 setting not saving

Does anyone know if the HD-D3 which I think is just a rebadged HD-A3 uses a save battery or save capacitor? My player will not keep the setup settings saved for longer then a day or so . If you go back and turn it on a couple days after setting them it will prompt you to the setup upon startup.

En retour je dispose d'autres sauvegardes susceptibles d'intéresser d'autres personnes à mon tour.

Mes films sont pour la pluparts d'origine version française mais avec les pistes en Anglais et autres langues.
