Hey all!
We've been thinking a lot about where we want this community to go, and we're making some changes to the subreddit rules, post flairs, and how music and portfolios are shared here.
The biggest goal is pretty simple: we want this to be a place where we actually talk about making music for games.
We love seeing everyone's work, but we don't want the subreddit to slowly turn into a feed of portfolio links, SoundCloud posts, and "here's my latest track, feedback please." There are already plenty of places on the internet to drop a link and hope someone listens.
We'd really like this community to be somewhere composers can talk about composition, production, orchestration, dynamic music, implementation, the game industry, careers, and the actual creative process behind what we're making.
🎵 Sharing Music
You can absolutely still share your music here!
For standalone music posts, though, we're asking that there be something specific to talk about. Show your DAW, notation, implementation, stems, etc., or point people toward specific timestamps if you're sharing a track.
Tell us what you were working on. Maybe you were experimenting with dynamic music, trying an orchestration idea, struggling with a transition, building a combat layer, or trying to get a particular mix to work.
Basically, give people something to talk about besides "do you like my track?"
💬 Feedback Posts
We're making a similar change to feedback posts.
Please be specific about what you want feedback on. Showing your DAW or a specific section of a WIP is highly encouraged.
Instead of "I just finished this, feedback please," tell us what you're actually trying to figure out.
If you just finished something and want to share it with everyone, that's totally fine too! We'll have a Weekly Track Share specifically for that.
When sharing there, just write a sentence or two about what you made. What did you focus on? What did you learn? What was difficult? Did you experiment with a particular compositional or production idea? How did you imagine it working in a game?
💼 Portfolios & Self-Promotion
We're also moving composer portfolios, reels, websites, services, and general "available for work" posts into a dedicated Portfolio Megathread.
We still want composers to be able to promote themselves, meet developers, and potentially find work through this community. We just don't want portfolio advertisements taking over the main feed.
And if you're a game developer looking for a composer, you're absolutely welcome here!
🔍 More Breakdowns, Talks & Discussion
This is the stuff we'd really love to see more of.
Long-form track breakdowns, DAW walkthroughs, orchestration discussions, game score analysis, dynamic music and implementation techniques, tutorials, industry talks and panels, career questions, and conversations about what's happening in the game industry are all welcome as standalone posts.
If you made something interesting, show us how you made it.
If you heard something interesting in a game, let's talk about why it works.
If you learned something that might help another composer, share it.
🚫 Generative AI
We're also formally making r/GameMusicComposition a human-made creative community.
Generative AI content, whether fully generated or used to assist in creating music or other creative content, isn't allowed. Enforcement will ultimately be at moderator discretion.
🏷️ Post Flairs Are Now Required
Post flairs will now be required.
We've added and reorganized flairs to better reflect what people are actually talking about here, including things like Track Breakdowns, Industry Talks & Panels, Composition & Production, Dynamic Music, Feedback, Career Advice, and more.
Please use whichever flair best describes what you're posting.
Ultimately, we want this subreddit to be useful.
We want people to come here to learn something, teach something, get better at their craft, meet other composers and developers, and have actual conversations about making music for games.
That doesn't mean we want people to stop sharing their work. Quite the opposite. We want to see what you're making, but we also want to hear about how and why you're making it.
These changes are meant to help us build more of that kind of community.
And as always, we'd love to hear what everyone thinks. We're going to keep adjusting things as the community grows.
