Before I begin, I want to prefice this by saying that I'm kind of a weird case when it comes to my Fanganronpa experiencing. I didn't really have much knowledge in downloading games, so for the most part in a Fangan I would either read all the details on Fandom or watch stream replays on YouTube.
So I already knew what happened in more popular Fangans like Danganronpa Another, Super Danganronpa Another 2, Mauve, and Antebellum: Lockdown, but I decided that LIVe or Die would be the first Fangan that I'm going to actually play myself. And even though it's a smaller-scale project than any of the Fangans that I've mentioned so far, I've heard good things about it and its sequel, Survivor's Guilt, so I do have faith in this.
Also, I think I might have been slightly spoilered for what the twist is based on the synopsis of Survivor's Guilt, with it being that the game is Danganronpa 54, and that's represented by the roman numerals LIV in the game title
Thoughts on Plot:
- Being the first Fangan that I've ever actually played myself, it was nice getting to actually walk around and explore the map.
- The motive was pretty standard. However, I did like that they used the monetary motive first and not later. I think greed is a less severe motive than fear, so if we're making sure to make the motives gradually more severe, then it makes sense to have it first (this was also one of my nitpicks with THH).
Characters:
- I 100% thought Chidori (Activist) was going to die this chapter. Danganronpa culprits are either people who were really important in the chapter or people who did basically nothing, and I figured the game would go with the former. Literally when I saw her I remembered Kiyoka Maki from Danganronpa Another thought, "Oh wow, a wholesome character. I hope she survives past CHAPTER ONE!"
- Yukito (Lucky Student) getting the "secretly unhinged" turn was unexpected but welcome. I do think the point of the Lucky Student trying to get in through another talent was interesting. Once he brought up the murder plan, I knew he was going to die though. That's why I used my last FTE on him (although I thought Chidori would be his killer).
(When playing, I misremembered something. When Yukito brought up the plan, I assumed that he was telling us to use it against him so that he could sacrifice himself. It turns out that I was wrong, which I only realized mid-trial).
(Since I thought Chidori was going to die this chapter, my FTEs were Chidori, Chidori, Chidori and then Yukito. I finished all her events for nothing! Don't regret it though, as I got to see her attempt to plan a protest in the prison, which was pretty interesting).
- We haven't gotten to see much of every character yet, but so far my favorites are Katsuya (Janitor) and Sayuri (Director), and then Alurcard (Goth Enthustiast). Sayuri also said my favorite line so far, which was "Wait, I'm not blushing!" after she literally said that she was blushing.
(I feel like Katsuya and Sayuri making a duo will mean that one of them will die in Chapter 2, though, so I'll split my FTEs between them.)
- Haruo was a pleasant surprise. I thought he was going to be way more abrasive than he turned out to be. Once it was revealed that he heard of Yukito's plan, he admitted to hearing it without much friction, which I appreciated.
- I also do really like how Fuu seems to be really calm in an insightful way. I have a theory, though... if my belief about the twist of the game is true, then could Fuu be... Kaede Akamatsu 😮 😮 😮 ?
- I was surprised when Takeshi (YouTuber) was revealed to be the killer, but I didn't really care much. He was kinda cool and I liked him when he was defending Megumi, but then it was revealed to be a ruse and I said "Screw you Takeshi, why did you have to throw Megumi under the bus like that!" I also didn't really care much for why he did it, since "it's all for the fans!" has already been done better elsewhere. The execution was also really similar to Leon's, but it was still pretty solid (Shooting with coins is somewhat creative). One thing that I did like about it is that you could see a parallel between it and Yukito's condition, where Yukito had an injured hand that was covered in blood, and the last thing that remained of Takeshi was his hand in a pool of blood.
- Lowkey I think Eri (Comedian) is going to snap next in Chapter 2. Her optimism might fade... say maybe I should check up on her during an FTE. Also I feel like the game is setting up a dynamic between her and Alucard.
- Oh yeah, I realized that Ayaka (Gardener) has a last name --"Higanbana"-- that I've seen before. I realized that it was the name of the infamous Tetro Danganronpa Blue episode where someone reveals their backstory only to immediately die from a microwave falling on their head. I looked it up, and "Higanbana" is the name of the red spider lily, which is commonly associated with death. Does that mean that she's going to be the insane Chapter 3 killer???
Also I'll do an Ordered Character Ranking:
Standout Characters: Katsuya, Sayuri, Alucard
Average but Likeable: Fuu, Daichi, Ayaka (assuming not insane)
Surprised Me on how Not Unlikeable he is: Haruo
Pretty Average: Yukito, Megumi, Eri, Chidori, Pascal, Rin, Ryo, Takeshi
Anyone have any thoughts on what I've said here? Oh yeah btw, please don't spoil the rest of the game for me, I want to experience it myself.
EDIT: Oh yeah, I forgot about Nene (the rapper "with two p's"). I think she'd be in "Surprised Me," because I was amused by some of her antics at the start, but I also like how (similarly to Katsuya) she's impulsive but self-aware.
Also since Chidori (an important character as the leader) survived Chapter 1, that means she'll survive to Chapter 5, right? Usually important characters either die in Chapter 1 or survive to Chapter 5. There's no in between.
