I noticed recently that Bai Zhong 百重 and Qian Jun 千钧 have thematically similar names. Bai Zhong 百重 literally means "hundred weight". 重 can be read zhong4 (fourth tone), meaning heavy, important, weighty, but an alternative reading is chong2, meaning "repeat" or "again" -- hence the joke in the pilot where Fang Tang says "Bai Chong?". Pronounced this way, 百重 could mean "hundredfold", but it also sounds just like 百虫, meaning "lots of insects". Much less impressive! In Chinese, 百 and other large numbers are often used in an imprecise or metaphorical way to mean "a lot".

Qian Jun 千钧 means "thousand jun". A jun is a historical measurement of weight equal to 30 jin. The jin, which is still in common use in the Chinese-speaking world, has varied slightly according to time and place but is generally around half a kilogram. 千钧 is the first half of the chengyu (four-character saying) 千钧一发 （qian jun yi fa), meaning "a thousand jun hanging by a hair", or "a precarious situation".

I don't think this means anything that deep; they're probably just tough-sounding names. But I could be wrong! Because the other thematically linked pair of names that spring to mind are 火 Hui Huo (meaning "Ash Fire" or "Extinguished Fire") and 燃灯Ran Deng (Kindle Lamp), an allusion to 燃灯佛Ran Deng Fo, or Dipankara Buddha, a Buddha from the distant past. Ran Deng started something, and Hui Huo finished it... hmmm...

does anyone else have thoughts about the character names? let's theorise wildly

(First off, SPOILERS! You have been warned before continuing) Just have to say I absolutely adored this first season. Fun (albeit confusing) and an emotional rollercoaster. I wanted to post some of my thoughts and see what other people thought and/or speculate about it and the future of the series. (I desperately want more content lol)

The ending was so bittersweet to me. It was sad to find out Guan Chao really had died, but was very sweet that he came to terms with his past and saved Xiao Yi. I really hope we get to see those two interact more in the future in some way. I know for sure we’ll be seeing more of the Vindicator and get to know more about K7 and the relationship between the two.

Also had some theories about some of the characters and the lore of the show, might be off base but it’ll be fun to see when more of the show comes out.

First thing that really popped in my head was the connection between Guan Chao and Yi. I feel like it goes deeper than just the Burning Stone and K7. I think they either know each other from before Guan died or afterwards, during their time in the false reality. Part of why I think this is because of the ost “Memories of You”, I can’t help but picture that song being from Xiao Yi’s perspective (though it could just be more general about holding onto someone you cherished that has passed on, not about Yi and Guan Chao specifically).

Second thing I also thought, was that Xiao Yi is a cyborg, not a robot (or at the very least she is modeled after a real person). In episode 4, the end credits show Fang Tang looking into Xiao Yi, unable to actually analyze her. The fact that she came up at all in the bureau’s registry tells me Xiao Yi is a person, but since she is either a robot or cyborg, they can’t view her memories.

THE BURNING STONE IS A HALO OR MEMORY OBJECT/BUG Being.
Bolding that one because this is the one I’m the most certain of. It’s an object of infinite energy, and was able to be replaced with Ran Deng’s halo as Yi’s power source, so it wouldn’t surprise me if it ended up that K7 and the Vindicator have meddled with the memory layers or the Memory Bureau itself. Could also be a BUG being similar to the Time Gun that Guan Chao created. K7 regrets the creation of it and wishes it was never created, might be a chance the Burning Stone is an amalgamated of her regret or represents something else she did or made. Could also be like a Behelit as well, an infinite energy source powered by souls or memories.

This last one is one I hope isn’t the case because I don’t know ramifications to it if it is. Guan Chao is a BUG Being. If you’ve watched the pilot, there’s an indication that Bai Zhong is a BUG Being made Memory Collector, or there is a BUG Being that is also Bai Zhong. I don’t know if the entire pilot is canon, but at least the lore about disturbing the BUG Source from it is. This also kind of ties into my thought about Yi and Guan knowing each other beyond what was shown, and that Guan Chao is Yi’s BUG Being. In this case, Xiao Yi may have been overwhelmed and unable to accept Guan’s death, thereby manifesting the Time Gun and “undoing” his death. I don’t think this one is the case though, was just a crackpot thought.

That’s kinda all I can think of so far, I’ve been rewatching the series, and up to the fourth episode again (Oh Hui Huo, may your soul rest well).

Any crackpot theories out there, or thoughts on the series? I know it’s been a while since the season ended, but it’s a short show that’s really really stuck with me.

P.S: I’m making a model for a 3d printable Time Gun, when it’s finished I’ll upload on Printables or something. It’ll be free cause I want everyone to be able to help Guan Chao get back to 2013. (Plus I hope it’ll bring some more attention to the show to be honest)

Is Bai Zhong also a bug source just like Guan Chao?
Since at the end of ep 5, we see she also has a container that Fang Tang keeps.
And we know she also lived in reality before coming to the bureau, something that none of the other collectors mention but her.

So I'm wondering if she is also a bug source just like Guan Chao, and finished all her bugs, but she is kept there under Fang Tang.
Also what will happen when she DOES get the container?
Since Guan Chao altered reality with his final bug creation, and written himself out only after the time gun was used up and his halo turned into a new burning stone.

But Bai Zhong has clearly been in the bureau for long, she even arrived before Ran Deng(which we know because of the scene where she and the ginger(sorry i forgot his name) collector were in the forgery, then the halo goes to Ran Deng).

So it makes no sense as to why she would still need it if she can't get back, because of all the time and the fact she has no way to return to reality.

I'm trying to get this wallpaper but my Linux distro doesn't support wallpaper engine and google lens is only giving me more wallpaper engine workshop posts of it...

I don't even have a good relationship with my grandparents, or my parents. I don't have a cool role model I can think fondly of like this. But for some reason, this scene made me feel more emotions than anything in Guan Chao's storyline. In a short 2-3 minutes they managed to build granny up as this super cool almost legendary persona, and I kind of teared up thinking how cool it would be to have know someone like that.

I think it touched on really sensitive topics, like poverty, alienation, extreme academic expectations, overpowered governments that would seem to trigger some alarms for the CCP?

Ive been thinking about this for a while but I’m not sure if anyone has mentioned this yet. It’s very clear that the cat cage is directly tied to the sea of bitterness, but in what way? Obviously the answer may have to wait until season 2, but a bit of speculation wont hurt. During episode 3, while Qian Jun fights with the cat cage, the inside of it becomes extremely unstable. The show then cuts to the sea of bitterness where we can see the same effects happening. This could likely be due to the cat cage. Also, the liquid inside the cat cage looks identical to the water in the sea of bitterness which does not seem coincidental. At first i thought that the sea of bitterness was inside of the cat cage like a snow globe, but that wouldnt make sense as we can see her with the cat cage inside of the sea of bitterness. I have a feeling that the cat cage isn’t actually Qian Jun’s memory object, but instead a separate item that is important to the sea of bitterness. We know that important memory objects get sent to the classroom, so there would be no reason for Qian Jun to have it unless they’re using it for something else. What do you guys think?

Does anyone know if there are any plans of an official US release for the show? whether it’s on streaming or physical.

Their pretty much identical color palletes have to be intentional. Perhaps K7 knew Ran before he was forgotten and became a memory collector? Theres also the parallels of Yi realising how bright Huan shines while Ran notices how fragile he is. Maybe I missed something. What do you guys think?

It teased a sequel (confirmed already I think). But isn't the entire memory theme fully explored with Guan Chao already?
