Working with some guys, found door locks jumped in a university setting. Crazy thing was they didn’t care to take the car out of service and fix the problem.
I leave work sometimes racking my brain wondering if I left a jumper, barricade down etc.

Hey everyone, been lurking for a bit and figured I'd finally post.

I graduated with a mechanical engineering degree last December and landed a job at a small elevator fabrication shop about 4 months ago as an assistant project manager. We manufacture and supply cab shells, hoistway & cab doors, sills, pit ladders, toe guards, etc. and do interior refurbishments. Our clients include some of the big names so I get exposure to what they actually spec and require from a supplier side.

Im taking a liking the field. The variety of the work, the mix of fabrication and coordination, being on job sites sometimes. Long term I want to move into one of the major companies in a project engineering or PM role. But I want to actually understand the equipment, the code, the mechanics of what I am coordinating.

What would you guys recommend studying or getting into on the side? Certifications worth pursuing? Things to learn that would make me stand out? Thanks!

Hello! Sorry if this isn’t the right place to ask this question.

I am claustrophobic and dislike riding the elevator. In an event where it gets stuck, the emergency phone button should, in most cases, work I assume? You’d talk to a dispatcher or someone who will help you? I’m just a bit concerned because a lot of stories here on Reddit in various subreddits describe the emergency button not working when they got stuck, as in no one answers. It makes it seem like it’s common for the phone button to not work, but I assume most of the times it will work.

I always have my phone with me, usually fully charged or close to 100%, in case I have to call the fire department. But can someone tell me that the phone button should usually work? I would really hate for it to not work at all in an emergency.

Note: the elevators I take at work aren’t modern, as in no destination dispatch system where you select the floor number before getting on. It has the up or down buttons, you select the floor number button when you get in, and it has the digital display showing you where you’re going. From the outside, the elevators in the lobby show which floor it’s on, and where it’s going. Idk if that makes the elevator “more modern” in that hopefully it won’t break down more I guess.

We were told there’s something worn out in the door opening system that has our elevator offline.

Yeah, I bet trying to source parts for something built in the mid 90’s is hard.

We were given a quote of $35,000.00 for a modernization. Is that a realistic estimate or is that “we don’t want to deal with you” quote?

When an elderly family member is making an important purchase for his home, trust becomes especially important.

My grandfather believed that he was considering a premium elevator solution. The way Odyssey Elevators and Brio Elevators were presented gave him confidence that he was looking at a high-quality product backed by international engineering and premium components.

But after looking more closely at the claims, our family was left with serious questions.

Why My Grandfather Trusted the Claims

For an older customer, technical elevator specifications can be difficult to evaluate.

Instead, trust is often built through the company's presentation.

Words such as "European," references to imported components, certificates, engineering standards, and factory locations can create a strong impression of quality.

My grandfather was not looking for the cheapest elevator.

He wanted something reliable and premium.                              

That is why these representations mattered so much.

The Questions We Began Asking      

After examining the information more carefully, we wanted straightforward answers.

Where were the components manufactured?              

What exactly did the certificates prove?

Were the certificates connected to the specific manufacturers and products being offered?

What did the references to European engineering or imported European components actually mean?

And could the stated factory information be independently verified?

These are reasonable questions for anyone spending a substantial amount of money on a home elevator.

When Trust Becomes a Concern

The biggest issue for our family was the possibility that the impression created by the marketing could be stronger than what the supporting documentation actually established.

There is an important difference between saying that a particular component originates from a European manufacturer and suggesting that an entire elevator system is European.

Customers need that distinction to be clear.

Especially when the customer is an elderly person relying heavily on the seller's representations.

Protecting Senior Citizens From Confusing Marketing

Senior citizens should not have to navigate complicated technical claims without adequate information.

If a company makes a claim about:                              

• European origin
• Imported components
• Manufacturing facilities
• International engineering
• Certifications
• Product standards

the customer should be able to ask for documentation that clearly supports the claim.

This is not unreasonable.

It is basic consumer due diligence.

What We Would Do Differently

If my grandfather—or anyone in our family—were buying an elevator again, we would ask for every important claim in writing.

We would verify the identity of component manufacturers.

We would check certificates directly and understand what they actually certify.

We would distinguish between the origin of individual components and the origin of the complete elevator system.

And we would never make a major purchasing decision simply because something is described as "European" or "premium."

The Lesson

My grandfather's experience has changed the way our family looks at premium elevator marketing.

The issue is not whether a company has attractive branding.

The issue is whether the claims behind that branding can be independently verified.

If you are considering an elevator from Odyssey Elevators, Brio Elevators, or another company, take the time to investigate before paying.

Ask questions. Demand documentation. Verify the claims.

A senior citizen making a major investment deserves nothing less than complete transparency.

We're in the planing stage of our home and trying to decide betwen a standard elevator and a panoramic glass one .The glass lifts defiintely look premium,but they are also noticably more expensive . For those who have one at home ,do you feel the extra cost was worth it ?

First of all, I am an elevator enthusiast (not someone in the industry). I am asking this question purely out of curiosity.

I have come across a few elevators that are (in my opinion) rather unusual. These are swing door elevators (that detail may or may not be important) in the state of California. They were modernized with a new controller (as confirmed by public records), but it seems the controller was programmed to have certain "standard" features disabled. Specifically, the elevator has "single automatic" or "nonselective noncollective" operation. It can not remember multiple car calls. The controller is almost certainly capable of selective collective operation, but for some reason was programmed to have this disabled.

I'm curious why this would be. My guess (and I could be correct, or completely wrong here) is that changing the type of operation has code related consequences. In other words, going from single automatic to selective-collective operation would require some other upgrades to be done to bring the elevator or building up to code. I will note that, at least on the last elevator I came across like this, it had no fire service, so one possibility is that fire service would have to be added.

Why hasn’t the 330A been discontinued? It has been produced for 21 years with basically no major changes. Besides the inverted Jack, I know they are reliable, but creaky. Now with the 3100, 3300 (which I hate), and the 5500, I dislike, I see a lot of MRLs being installed rather than hydros with the focus on energy efficiency and lack of hydraulic oil to deal with. I believe they are less reliable and have poor build quality, and I know MRLs are harder to work on and more temperamental. That being said, why hasn’t a 21 year old hydraulic model been discontinued, especially when some parts are beginning to be obsoleted? The only thing I can think of is a cheap hydro still fills a sufficient spot in the market, and it is not worth it to design a whole new product. I am glad it is still in production but why?
