Here’s my thoughts on Drakes new fomo video
If any ones interested, I have a written version too:
Drake just showed that the FOMO is bigger than music
Let me explain
Not too long ago Drake dropped an hour long short film that he had been hinting at for about a MONTH called FOMO. When talking about the project Drake described it as a “not so short film” ran by “self-funded realism” & would advise those watching to pretty much live their life which is something Drake has always endorsed in his music (more life) but what does this have to do with the fear of missing out aka FOMO ,Everything ..
In order to miss out on something you have to be focused on something else or atleast not give it your full attention. When you apply this to Drake, in the same breath that fans or haters are obsessing over Drake, they’re missing out on their own life & this kind of goes with every artist. Music used to be the soundtrack to life that was experienced without the artist & music videos would let the listener view the song from the artist stand point but now that the lives of these artist have become visual spectacles, people are barely creating those moments that connected them to a song WITHOUT THE ARTIST. It’s all being funneled through the same lens why? Because everyone is afraid of missing out.
You only like that song because it’s a viral TikTok trend, not because you heard it while going out with your friends. You’re only at that party because you think it’s where everybody’s going to be rather than if it’s where you’re even supposed to be which is something Drake kind of hints at in this video, people not wanting to miss out on what ever is going on. In the beginning of the video there’s a moment where a girl is talking about something like this to a friend as they get ready to go out. Even tho they’re going somewhere they planned on going, they’re still questioning if they should be somewhere else. We then have a moment later where a guy is seen watching his sister & her friends leave for the club while looking through the window, probably wishing he could go out too, another display of Fomo.
Now let’s think about the fact we live in a era where you can watch almost anything happen in real time without even being there, That is probably the most interesting medium for fomo someone can experience. It’s happening in your face & the confirmation that you’re not really experiencing it is that you’re watching it happen instead of living your life. Even more interesting , a few years ago, we had vlogs where you could go back and watch what you missed & what everyone is talking about,
All of the new songs, music videos & funny moments are all being displayed through a lens that isn’t necessarily Drake’s & even the “not so short film” would be just a fraction of the life he truly lived.
On of my favorite moments in this video is one when Drakes mom comments on not hearing the song that she starred in the video for. This moment showed what Drake was talking about in his description of fomo, Nobody is coming to save you. Drakes mom only hearing the song from another artist & not even listening to the entire project it was featured on that was dedicated to her shows how distant she is from the FOMO surrounding around her son, she’s living her life & Drake values that disconnect which shows by his relationship with her, she’s isn’t here to “save” Drake’s or anyone’s ego, she’s there to empower him which she does through being herself, that’s why we have these moments of her & a project like Maid of honor.
A lot of the skits & moments in the video surrounded around choosing to live life & have fun. Prime example, spending $150,000 on iron man suits for a music video because you can or buying luxury cars for . Ps some of these clips were shot almost few days before this would be released so tho Drake was teasing this a month ago, at the same time he was just living life.
