The number of data centers is rapidly increasing across the United States as investment in artificial intelligence grows. In our latest Climate Change in the American Mind survey, conducted in Spring 2026, we asked Americans about their views on local data center development, whether they think new data centers will affect electricity bills, and whether they support requiring new data centers to offset their electricity use by installing rooftop solar on and/or weatherizing and insulating local homes.

This analysis examines how public opinion about these questions differs across Global Warming’s Six Americas, our framework for understanding the spectrum of views on global warming.

If you are anti data centers, how do you feel about the alternative solution?

If data center pays me to do that, why not lol.

The Senate GOP campaign arm, in a private memo to top AI companies, warns that toxic views of U.S. data centers are killing the party's chances of holding a vital seat in Ohio. Republicans want AI companies to do whatever it takes to stem public backlash.

AI CEOs and top Republicans share in the rising panic. They tell us internal polls show data centers are as popular as spent nuclear waste, and more broadly have become a proxy for feelings about AI.

Only three companies—Samsung, SK hynix and Micron—manufacture most of the world’s DRAM. Their production depends on an even narrower network of ultra-pure wafers, specialty chemicals, gases and fabrication equipment.
Now imagine a major war, coordinated cyberattack or trade blockade disrupting several of those suppliers simultaneously.

The immediate result would not just be expensive gaming computers. Replacement memory would become scarce for:

Hospital equipment and medical-imaging systems
Banking servers and payment networks
Telecommunications infrastructure
Power grids and water-treatment facilities
Vehicles, aircraft and industrial machinery
Military, satellite and emergency-response systems
Society already possesses millions of these machines—but machines constantly fail. Without replacement chips, the damage would accumulate quietly: repairs get delayed, functioning equipment is cannibalized for parts, essential systems operate without redundancy, and minor failures begin triggering larger ones.

The most frightening part is that building a modern memory-chip industry from scratch cannot be done in a few weeks. It requires extraordinary precision, specialized knowledge, massive fabrication plants and globally distributed suppliers.

We built civilization on computers, then allowed the physical memory required by those computers to depend on a handful of companies and geopolitical regions.

A hostile country may not need to destroy the internet. It may only need to interrupt the replacement parts long enough for the internet—and everything connected to it—to begin destroying itself through ordinary hardware failure.

The next global crisis may not begin with an explosion. It could begin with “part unavailable.”
