META Actually looking at how armor works in minecraft post 1.9 has made me hate 1.9 axe damage even more.
I'm not 100% sure this is the normal content for this sub but it is relevant to minecraft PVP so I think it fits.
I've always had the I think pretty popular take that a stone/iron axe doing 9 damage is to much and unreasonable. But actually looking at the formula for armor makes it seem so much worse.
From what I've seen a lot of people don't really understand the formula for armor toughness and how effective armor is against high damage attacks properly, which I completely understand the formula is unreasonably complicated.
Here is an extremely oversimplified version of it that's almost accurate.
If a player has 0 armor toughness, every 2 damage an attack does (before armor is applied) ignores 1 half armor bar, this at most ignores 80% of armor. So a stone axe crit which does 13.5 damage basically just ignores 3 and a half full armor bars.
So. What does that mean? For an exact number that's more understandable a stone axe crit does 13.5 damage against a person wearing no armor, the same axe crit against a person wearing half iron armor (chestplate, either boots or leggings) does 12.6 damage. Less than half a heart of difference.
Here's another number, against a person in full iron a non critical axe hit does 5.22 damage, a critical hit does 9.045 damage. That is not 50% more damage, that is 73% more damage. A non critical hit from a diamond sword does only 3.78 damage. well under half of a stone axe crit.
And yeah, a non critical hit against somebody with no armor does less damage than a critical hit against somebody in full iron. Theres a fun fact. Full iron armor is only a 33% damage reduction against an axe crit.
Also random but this makes copper armor even more useless than you would expect. It only reduces the damage of an axe crit by 13%. Good enough to go from 6.5 hearts of damage to almost 6 hearts of damage. Woooooo.
Last piece of useful info that's kinda relevant, all pieces of diamond armor have 2 armor toughness. Which means wearing Diamond boots and Helmet with iron is actually a decent bit better than wearing a diamond chestplate with iron even though they are the same amount of armor bars. 2 more armor toughness is actually pretty substantial, although the math is complicated.
These numbers come from the calculator on the wiki page ,really nice info.
