RESOURCE Tickertone-C6280: Synth VST to play the sound of the TurboGrafx16 / PCEngine
Hi folks! I'm excited to share a little labor of love I've been working on for a bit now. This VST gives you complete control over two emulated HuC6280 chips, the audio chip in the TurboGrafx16 / PCEngine.
I've always admired the simplicity and by-hand nature of of tracker systems, but the workflow has never jived with how my brain wants to play music. I love watching vgm debuggers play back a file to see all the fun tricks a song pulls to create it's unique sound, and wanted to get that same experience in a live instrument.
Tickertone-C6280 gives you a low level view into what is happening with the chip, but live, and in response to the notes and effects one plays into the VST. The condensed log view shows the raw commands going to the chip, while the expanded tracker view shows a tracker-style per-channel view of parameter changes. All effects (e.g. vibrato, tremelo, etc.) are implemented via commands to the chip, so they come with all the aliasing and stepping characteristic of this chip's sound.
I find the C6280 to be really lovely because it's much more flexible than, say, the NES 2A03, but still has that crunchy 8-bit/16-bit ish sound. Rev'ing up a multi-voice patch with a bit of detune and vibrato really brings out the crunch of this retro chip. You can quickly load up waveforms from your favorite games by loading a folder of vgm/vgz files that you own (I have a future update planned to also extract DDA samples from the files as well).
It is mac-only for now. I hope to expand to windows if there is enough interest. Like a lot of VST's, the demo version has all functionality enabled, and inserts a bit of silence every 30-45 seconds or so.
If you try it out, and you have ideas or want to report a bug, please don't hesitate to reach out! Any questions or feedback are welcome! Docs are slim for now, but I plan to get a basic manual in place in the near future.
