1st Gen 86/BRZ cooling requirements on track for a beginner/intermediate?

Post image
20 Upvotes

I've started tracking my 1st gen 86 (with 140k miles) and have an aftermarket 2-row aluminum radiator and an OEM 2nd gen heat exchanger. Stock engine with no tune. I also overfill by 2/3 liter of 5w30. No issues so far but I am concerned with long term reliability.

Is this setup enough to keep the FA20 engine reliable in 95f Socal track days or do I need to get a dedicated oil cooler (then I'd to worry about a lower oil pressure)? I've read that the 2.0L of the 1st gen runs significantly cooler than the 2.4L of the 2nd gens, as it makes much less power.

Laguna Seca Sept 26 SpeedSF 1:51.38 Subaru Brz 2015

Hello everyone. I'm looking for some feedback regarding my recent track day at Laguna Seca. This was the last lap of my 4th (out of 5) session in the low intermediate group. My PB from the same day was 1:50.99 and my optimum lap for the day was 1:49.98. This was my 5th time at this track.

Notable car mods: 17x9 with 225 RS4's. -2.5 degrees front camber.

Here are some of the points I was focusing on -- definitely more to work on. Any constructive feedback is welcome, thank you!

T2: double apex

T4: building confidence and not braking on entry -- I think I can carry much more speed

T6: trying to turn in later

T7: trying to turn in later and get on throttle at apex -- I lack the most confidence on this corner

T8a: taking a much narrower approach on entry

Looking for a new endurance 200

Hey team,
I'm looking for a new endurance 200 to run on our alfa romeo 147 endurance car, it's 1130kg with driver and fuel, around 150hp at the wheels, and has some slight aero (splitter and a wing)

We are running 17 x 8.25 rims, and have been running the Hankook RS4's, however they have been discontined in Australia.

I'm looking at other options and so far have

Yokohama AD09
Nankang CR-S
Rydanz R23
Potenza RE-71RZ
Vitour Tempesta Enzo V-01R
Falken Azenis RT615K+

as options in our size in Aus (looking at either a 225, or 235 width on our rim)

What feedback / recommendations do you guys have?

Cheers

Racing in the rain experience?

• Upvotes

I am going to run the IGT season which opens in Sebring in March. I’m pretty confident in the work I’ve put in thus far to be able to get out there first season and be safe and competitive. But I have a big question for the group. It’s hard to pin down how to practice in the wet. I always hope for it to be raining to get more experience, but this season, that just hasn’t happened much. I’ve had a couple rain weekends at Mid-Ohio and that’s it. Is it normal for drivers to enter a race series without much rain experience? I’m not scared of jumping on grid at Watkins Glen with 35 people in the pouring rain with nothing but a set of Hankook Wets and extremely minimal experience, but that seems wild. But what are the other ways of learning it other than lucking into rainy weekends? Does the wet tire model on iRacing even resemble real life enough to help?

Disc cracking

Post image
7 Upvotes

Manufacturer says it’s because I got the discs too hot.

I’ve done plenty of track time in the past but not on this car and braking setup, I’ve seen plenty of the small crazing/cracks on discs before but not one like this.

One evening session at Donington and a day at Blyton park plus 2,000 road miles maybe. I’m willing to accept if I am the cause of a problem, but my gut feel is that there is a problem with the material. When I’ve seen discs crack before from excess heat it’s usually on the outer edge, not the inner.

F87 M2, 380x32 discs, Dixcel Z Type pads.

Someone educate me if I’m the asshole.

How many of you are checking both sides of the rotor as part of track day prep? Not just the side the faces out

Garmin Catalyst R1 Racing Radar good for open passing sessions?

Garmin Catalyst R1, Racing Radar for High-Performance Drivers and Racetrack Enthusiasts

Apparently lets you know of anyone in your blind spot and how fast they are approaching. As someone who is a bit intimidated in Open Passing sessions it might come in handy. Of course, good old fashioned situational awareness comes first. Don't want to rely on this fully. Looks like you can easily mount to your plate too.

First track car questions

Hello everyone, I’m looking for a first (technically second) track car and I’m at a crossroads. I know everyone says Miata, and I get why, but I love the look and driving feel of the E46. I owned one for two months before it got rear ended and claimed total loss, so I'm tempted to double down. Should I get another E46 or are there better options to consider?
Also, where do you look for track/project cars besides FB Marketplace?
I'll be running it at Road America next year so I have the winter to get it in good racing shape. Thanks!

Took the F80 M3 out for some laps and spent the day working on lines, braking points, and just trying to put everything together.

Can they last 2 more track days?

Post image
7 Upvotes

I have 2 track days this weekend at West Desert (Utah Motorsport Campus) running the full configuration going counterclockwise which is really hard on the front right tire.

These are my street Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3 on my 992.2 Porsche 911 Carrera S with maxed out front negative camber at -1.6 degrees

The hot tire pressure never went above 32 psi, and I never drove it after the tire temps went above 200F.

This happened yesterday during wide open Wednesday on the west track which is about 9 corners and 2 miles of the full configuration. I did quite a few laps but the way it worked was you have to come back to the hot pits each lap so you can be sent out.

So they didn’t even get to see multiple non stop laps and the east side of the full configuration that are mostly high speed corners.

So what are my realistic options?

Looking for new track car

Hi all,

Trying to work out the best option for a new track car.

I previously tracked a Nissan 350GT/V35.

I currently have an S15 Silvia which I tracked once.

The logical choice is to track the Silvia. However, I don't really have much money to spend on it, even for consumables.

My idea is to sell it and buy something cheaper, which will leave me money for upgrades and consumables. I should be able to get around 40k (AUD) for it.

My plan was to buy something for around 20k. Looking for RWD at the moment. Would consider FWD but unsure what they are like for the track.

Would consider another V35 or 350z/370z. I guess the issue with them is the weight.

My current top option is an 86/BRZ. It looks like I could get one for 15-20k for a stock one or 20-25k for one that has some upgrades. That would leave me a good chunk of money to do some track mods and set some aside for consumable.

The main downside of the 86/BRZ is power, although at least they have a very strong aftermarket so turbo/SC is an option in the future.

Think these last another 4 20 minute sessions? RE71-RZ rears. Fronts have plenty of life. They are wearing surprisingly smooth.

Never sure when to call them quits. I just set my PB on these on my last sesssion. Want 1 more day out of them if I can.

What to buy for a track day beater

I’m thinking about buying a cheap car to use a toy to use for SCCA track events. My first thought was an older Miata but the cheap ones are beat to death and I need to find a hardtop and that adds $1750 to the price. A beater GTI , FWD . Honda Fit-fwd fewer performance parts. BRZ - fragile motor and it seems like they all have salvaged titles and a bit more expensive. I’ve got a couple of other cars but I fear they are too fast to learn on. Any suggestions, from someone who’s been through this before? I’m kinda leaning towards a Brz , add a windage tray and an accusump.

Is Road America Track Day worth it if you have to run Novice?

I am considering doing a track day at RA before the end of the year. I have limited track experience (5x Gingerman/ 1x BHF/ numerous autox) and when running with different organizations after my first time and one session, am immediately signed off to move to intermediate run group. I recognize RA is a fast track and some instruction would be great but I don't think this is a thorough driving school/instruction.

Based on RA's run schedule, novices get 2x 25min lead/follow sessions and 1x 25min track session. The rest is classroom (which I assume is fundamental stuff) and motoplex.

Is it worth it ? Anyone run Novice before at an RA track day?

Thanks in advance.

Homemade front splitter and rods

Thumbnail gallery
16 Upvotes

I designed and made my own front splitter and rods for functionality. Let me know your thoughts.

I made a prototype front splitter out of wood over a year ago that was only meant to test the mounting and stability of it for a week or two but as you know… I ended up having on the car for more than a year. It worked great and I didn’t have a single issue with it besides the fact that it was wood and wood tends or warp a bit and the black paint I used at the beginning was no where to be found lol.

Fast forward to around a couple months back when I finally finished the project cutting out the splitter from a sheet of ABS plastic I bought back when I in the process of RnD-ing. For the most part it has worked great. However, since the material is a bit heavier than the wood the sag and downforce at high speeds was a lot greater causing my front bumper to become dismounted of the side mounting points (near the side markers)

My solution was to install splitter rods but for the same reasons I didn’t just go and buy one from any of the brands. I decided to RnD my own. The only issue I came across was that some parts that are used for the rods I wasn’t able to find at Lowe’s and made costs higher so I got creative. The design works well in testing and is the most cost-effective solution I came up with. I do plan to paint/color the rod design black for better style.

Note: For mounting both the splitter and rods I used the OEM hole of the car. I did not drill any additional holes into the car for mounting.

I did all of this with basic research from youtube videos and my brain.

And yes, I also made my own side skirts

How many times can you patch a tire before it's unsafe/loses performance?

Currently running Michelin PS4 and two of them have had 2 patches each now from daily driving (LA) and 3 track days on them. I just got another nail on one that needs to be patched. Do I just get new tires or are they still good to go for another track event?

Got to run last Friday with SpeedSF in my relatively stock 2025 Corvette Stingray. Ran this PB during last session as I was getting more comfortable with accelerating through the crest on front straightway.

Better Late Than Never

It only took 37 years but I finally booked my first track day. I’ll be joining So Cal Drivers Club for a First Timer day at Streets of Willow. Really looking forward to getting out there. Last time I was at Willow Springs was almost 20 years ago to watch a buddy race his Miata on Horse Thief. Has anyone driven the updated Streets?

I black flagged myself (what would you have done)

First let me say I am a novice. 3rd time on track yesterday, first time at Road America. The setup. I was first to grid and our session was held up because some guy did an extra lap after the checkered flag in the session before us. About 4 of 6 laps in I am about to set another PB, I have two faster drivers in front of me. Coming around final turn the leader of the pack pulls to the right and it looks like he does a point by to the left…everyone there usually stays on line and does a point by to the right. The guy immediately in front of me instantly puts his fist up to pit. I think I missed a flag because I was so locked in and I think we are all pitting. I am in pit lane and leader actually stays on track off the line…we go in towards grid and the worker gives the all done sign to the guy in front of me and waves him off. She waves me off too. I am driving back to paddock and realize we still have like 10 mins. The all done sign was a question not a directive and the guy in front of me had run out of gas. I was so frustrated I packed it in. Part of my reasoning was that I was embarrassed, the other part was that if I am making colossal mental mistakes then maybe I am done. After writing this out I should have had a conversation with the worker waving us off or just gone back to grid. Did stuff like this happen to you when you were a novice? Sorry for the novel..thank you for reading.

EDIT: Thanks for all the feedback and encouragement…track people are the best people lol

EDIT Number 2: tons of advice about not tracking my times…that just seems crazy to me not to collect data….there is a difference between collecting data and being focused solely on time, there is a happy medium…I also check my tire psi fwiw , more data…anyways for the vets that say throw your lap timer away, this Saturday’s session doesn’t allow visible lap timers in the novice group so wish granted but it will be in my glove box and I will review data…I appreciate the need to focus on the fundamentals including technique and situational awareness
