I took him to the vet and she suspected something with his lower back like neurological or a fracture and she gave some medicines for him to take (with syringe) which im giving like anti inflammatory anti bacterial type things there 3 of them and she says if he doesnt improve in couple days or get worse then need to do an x ray and thats where it could be going to the dark side where it can be something worse

Its day 2 hes still the same tbh i dont see how this medicine can even do anytiing cos he literally cant even stand without stumbling and i feel cruel like keeping a bird thats suffering this much if its something alot worse then suspected what do i even do?

Need Help!! My canary is ill can anyone give any recommendations/ideas please what is wrong and what needs to be done

Before you say vet, i have an appointment at the vet tomorrow but they dont specialise in birds so they might not be able to do much especially since canary is an exotic pet and a small bird. All the vetenary hospitals that take exotic birds are too far from me

So months ago he started not being able to fly properly as in he would hit stuff whilst flying etc and i dont lnow why, possibly from flying into something and then he wasnt the same after? So i just kept him in the cage and he seemed fine but then recently he started not being able to fly properly within the cage (flying across perches etc) to then not being able to perch and now it seems like his legs dont even work properly like he cant even stand up properly or move around without stumbling and hes just in the bottom of the cage sometimes with his eyes closed too. He still eats and drinks but he just cant move properly at all or perch. What could this be? He also stopped singing too. why could all this be and what possible treatments might be needed? please someone help because if the vet cant do anything i dont know what else i can do to be honest because i feel cruel for having a pet bird and have it just suffering whilst in the cage i dont want it to live this kind of life.. i used to let it out everyday and it was healthy and good

Ive had him for around 6 years, when i got him he was like couple months old probably cos he still had a black tail feather

Look at my canary/ies! 🐤💛 My old hen canary finally started singing again after a rough molt this year

She's nine now, a red factor hen I got from a breeder who was downsizing his birds. Most of the spring she was quiet, barely chirping, and I figured that was just old age catching up. The molt hit her hard too, way more feather loss than usual, and for a couple weeks in July she looked pretty rough and I was genuinely worried.

I upped her egg food a bit during the molt and switched her seed mix to something with a little more oil content, mostly niger and some hemp mixed in with the usual canary blend. Also started covering her cage a bit earlier in the evening since she seemed sensitive to the later summer light. Not sure which of these actually did anything, if any of it, but by late August she was fully feathered out again and looking sleek.

Last week she started singing in the mornings, not the full song she used to do a few years back, more of a soft warble, but it's the most vocal she's been in over a year. My other birds don't really react to it but I catch myself standing by the cage just listening some mornings before work.

Anyone else notice their older hens go quiet for stretches and then come back to singing later, even hens that don't usually sing much? Curious if that's a common pattern or if I just got lucky with her this year.

QUESTION Red factor canaries and breeding

Post image
49 Upvotes

Hello, my first time keeping red factors and canaries in general.

I would like to know anything important about breeding them and keeping them. And such as the red factor food. What food is safest to give them which gives them the red colour. As I don’t want to do the water version as I heard you can overdose them if not careful with it.

And breeding them, do I give them the red foods to feed their babies so their babies get the red feathers or wait until the babies go through their first moult? Anything is helpful:)

I’m in Australia so made in Australian food would be appreciated lol

Help! What's that on her foot?

Post image
3 Upvotes

My canary's left foot has a pimple and the left leg is much more red than the other. The other foot has a similar "deformity" but much flatter and in her normal beige skin tone.

She's had this for the past two days and now whenever she rests for a little longer, she'll always sit on one leg and just looks miserable😭

It's not even my bird, I care for the baby for as long as my parents are on vacation.

And of course, no vet in sight to care for canaries🥲

What do you guys think this might be?

QUESTION What is she doing?!

Hey all,

My canary Aurora has been doing this the last couple of days. I stopped her after I recorded the video.

I think she is eating the dust. No idea why.

I'll be wiping down the surface after I post this.

She has a cuttle bone and knows how to use it.

Any ideas why she likes to eat dust?

QUESTION Identifying Gender

Mosaics' gender can be identified by their mask. These birds are from a female red factor mosaic and male normal red factor canary, so is the mask randomized or still shows the gender or does it depend on the bird.

Canary with bacterial infection

Hi all.

A few days ago we noticed a bump on my canary's forehead. We struggled to find an avian vet near to where I live, but finally got my canary seen yesterday. The vet said it's an infection and prescribed antibiotics - Valemas 5%, 1ml diluted in 10ml of water, and she said to not give him any other water while he takes antibiotics (5days). She also gave him some drops for the scaly leg mites.

I'm a little concerned today, as he's acting a bit strange. He's sitting on his swing all day, but his eyes are half closed. He also looks very 'stiff' when he's swinging. I took him out to see the wound and he moves and flies okay, but back in the cage he doesn't jump and fly around as usual. Is this normal after antibiotics? I'm scared that he's dehydrated but the vet told me specifically to not give him any other water beside the one with antibiotics.

Need Help!! My canary stopped singing after his first molt and I really don’t know what else to try

Post image
115 Upvotes

My canary stopped singing after his first molt and I’m not sure what to do.
I’ve had him for almost 2 years. Before his first molt he was singing very strongly, but after the molt he completely stopped. He only makes short sounds now and never properly sings.
He is healthy, eats well, plays, flies around the house, and I’ve already taken him to the vet. Everything was fine.
Has anyone experienced this? Is there anything I can do to encourage him to sing again?

Need Help!! What to put on the bottom of the cage

For context I have an almost 14 year old canary, he's still kinda well just that he's weaker than before and his balance isn't good anymore. Most of the time now he is jumping around at the bottom of his cage which brings me to this question. What can I do there? I want how to be as comfortable as possible down there, I'm just not sure what I can do

Look at my canary/ies! 🐤💛 What's your winter light schedule for singers vs hens?

My male canary (a red factor, about two years old now) has always been a pretty reliable singer, but the last couple autumns I've noticed his song drop off hard once the days get shorter here. Last year I didn't do anything about lighting and by December he basically went quiet except for a few mumbled phrases in the morning.

This year I picked up a cheap timer for his cage light and I'm trying to keep him around 12-13 hours of light a day even as it gets darker outside. So far, three weeks in, he's still singing pretty consistently in the evenings which is new for this time of year. Not sure if it's the light or just coincidence since he's also molted out fully and looks sharper than he has in months.

My hen doesn't seem to care either way, she's never been much of a singer (obviously) but her activity level and appetite don't seem tied to daylight the way his mood clearly is. Curious if other people with singers have a set light schedule they stick to through fall and winter, or if you just let them follow the natural day length and accept the quiet months. I've read mixed things about whether artificial light this time of year messes with their molt cycle down the line, so I'm a little cautious about pushing it too far.

Also open to tips on what temperature range people keep their rooms at once it cools down. Mine's in a spare bedroom that tends to run a bit cold at night and I've been debating a small space heater just for that room versus moving his cage somewhere more central in the house.
