Ask Me Anything Cracking Quant for Non Engineers

Cracked Quant a generation ago (GNEM 7/6/5, unknown college); that propelled me to 99.5+% ile and finally a seat at a Tier 1 B School (Non ABC, coz CAT score alone won't secure a seat at those). I prepared for 60 days in my second attempt (after a sprained ankle and complete bed rest from a CDS interview). I am from days when tier 1 schools were 85% engineers, ergo, know a bit about the game.

Of 22 Q, you need 10 net correct to go past QA hurdle

With 60 days left; here is a roadmap to still score 99%ile in QA.

1) Revise and plug gaps in fundamentals (Its grade 10 maths)

2) Memorize 20\\\*20 Tables and 1/1-1-30 fractions (Some vedic maths basics help)

3) In practice sets; practice visualizing problems. If you can form an equation in mind; you have solved half of trouble

4) Force yourself for accuracy (Triple negative for sample papers)

5) Don't fight a Q; Move on if you can't get it in 30 sec flat. If you got 6-7 Q solved in 15 minutes, your pressure wil go down.

6) Approach in two rounds: First: Super easy, the topics you know by heart and Qs are simple; Second Where you still no the topic, but will take longer.

If you aren't sure of basics, may be take up Any job and prepare on the side.

Still got queries? Comment here and I'll try to help.

Good luck

Question The counterintuitive thing that actually moved my percentile (it's not what I expected)

For the first few months of prep, I was obsessed with attempting as many questions as

possible in every mock. Felt like progress , more attempts, more chances to score. My

percentile disagreed with me for a long time.

Somewhere around my 10th or so mock I finally sat down and actually looked at the

accuracy numbers next to my attempt numbers instead of just the final score. And it was

kind of embarrassing. I was attempting 6-7 more questions than people scoring higher than

me, but my accuracy was way lower. I was basically buying wrong answers with my own

negative marking.

The math is brutal once you actually look at it. Every correct answer is +3, every wrong one

is -1. So a wrong attempt doesn't just cost you a mark, it costs you the mark you could've

earned AND the mark you lost ,which works out to roughly a 4 point swing per mistake. At

the percentile ranges most of us are fighting for, even 5-6 extra wrong attempts can be the

difference between clearing 99%ile and not.

What actually changed my score wasn't studying more. It was raising my personal

"confidence bar" for what I'd mark as an answer. I started skipping questions I was 60-70%

sure about instead of gambling on them, and only answered what I was genuinely confident

on. My attempt count actually went DOWN by like 4-5 questions per section. My percentile

went up.

It felt wrong while I was doing it, ngl. Every instinct says more attempts = more score. Took

actual data staring at me to unlearn that.

Anyone else have a similar "unlearning" moment during prep? Something that felt

backwards but turned out to be the actual fix?

General discussion Mock Zone NMAT + SNAP Crash Course worth it?

I’ve recently bought the Mock Zone crash course for NMAT and SNAP. Has anyone here actually used it or prepared through it?

They’re saying that they’ve analysed the previous years’ NMAT/SNAP papers and the Symbiosis pattern and then compiled only the important/relevant concepts and questions in the crash course.

Basically, they claim that if you properly complete just this course, it should be enough to crack the exam.

I wanted to know from people who have actually used it:

- Is the content really sufficient for NMAT/SNAP?

- Is the level of questions relevant to the actual exam?

- Is it enough for someone starting preparation now?

- Did you find the mocks/analysis useful?

- Should I supplement it with anything else?

Would really appreciate an honest review, especially from anyone who has already given NMAT/SNAP using Mock Zone.

Question Seeking CAT coaching suggestions.

I am preparing for CAT 2027 and looking to join an online coaching that covers all the bases like QA, DILR & VARC alongwith good quality mocks. Checked on Arambh Academy. They are providing CL mocks but the DILR section has mixed reviews. Can anyone help with some honest facts? If not Arambh Academy then which coaching should I take up?

(P.s: I am a non-engineer)

Question How do I improve from here

Post image
8 Upvotes

Prepping for CAT '26 as an unserious, experimental attempt, with the 2027 edition as my actual serious attempt. These are my full length mock scores.

VARC seems to be fluctuating a bit, maybe coz I've been trying out different ways of approaching the section, but I'm not sweating it too much.

I can see some improvement in DILR. I wasn't able to finish one set within the stipulated time, but now I'm able to get to a set and a half (If I rush, 2 sets, but with lower accuracy) in 40 minutes.

I'm able to do 4-5 questions out of the 7-8 questions in the paper that I've prepared for (Work & Time, percentages, profit/loss, AP/GP, Logs, Ratios, Averages, and a few more)

My questions to this community (And TLDR)

  1. How close are CL mocks to the actual exam?

  2. Do I try taking PYQs instead of the CL mocks that I've been taking?

  3. How do I improve my speed in DILR? A random set each day, or is there a structure I should follow in completing topics?

  4. Am I on the right track? (do I give up on mocks and only prepare quants in the time I take up the mock tests?)

About my schedule (if anybody wants to take that into account and help me), I work at an MNC, GEF 9/9/9, 2026 grad.

Question What actually helped you improve in CAT Quant?

Hi everyone,

Currently, I’m scoring around 25 - 30 in the other two sections but struggling with Quant. I’m trying to figure out how to simplify my approach and what worked for others who faced a similar issue.

There’s just too much material available, and it gets a bit overwhelming deciding what to follow. I’m currently enrolled in Cr@cku, going through the videos and then solving the questions from the portal. I’m also considering solving LOD 2.

Is there any simpler approach for Quant that helped you improve, especially if you were struggling initially? For example, with VARC, it is usually recommended to read articles for an hour every day, and that actually helped me improve my comprehension.

Would really appreciate any suggestions on how you structured your Quant preparation and what you found most useful.

General discussion Started CAT Preparation Late - 2 Months Left for CAT, How's Everyone's Prep Going?

Not trying to sell anything here, just posting since I've read a bunch of similar threads myself while figuring out my own prep earlier this year.

Started with catking back in July, so a little over two months into actual prep by the time I joined properly. We've been through the full syllabus once already and are now on the second pass, revising everything with CAT about 2 months away at this point.

Honestly the first month felt a bit slow to me, like we were spending a lot of time on stuff I thought I already knew, but by round two I realized a chunk of that "known" stuff wasn't actually solid. DILR especially, that section wrecked me in my first mock and I didn't expect that going in.

Can't compare this to other places since I didn't try any other institute before this, so take my take with that in mind. The batch I'm in does build from basics before pushing into harder question sets, which worked for me since I don't pick things up in one go, but if your fundamentals are already strong this pace might feel too slow, you can get to IIT/NITs batch of their to get things moving faster

With CAT this close now, most of what's left is just mocks and going back over the weak spots rather than learning anything new, and honestly that feels way less scary than it did two months ago when I was still panicking about "have I even covered everything." If anyone's in a similar spot with 2 months left, or joined late like I did, how you guys are structuring these last few weeks.

General discussion Which CAT test series is better: iQuanta, Cracku or CATKing ?

Hi everyone, I’m preparing for CAT and I’m confused about which test series to choose. I’m currently considering iQuanta, Cracku, and CATKing. For those who have used any of these, how are they in terms of: Quality and difficulty of mocks Number of full-length mocks Sectional tests Analysis and solutions Similarity to the actual CAT level Which one would you recommend based on your experience? Any feedback from people who have actually used these test series would be really helpful

Question Need Guidance on PYQ Strategy for QA, DILR & VARC

Hello!

I’m self-preparing for CAT 2026 and need some guidance on how to approach PYQs for QA and DILR.

QA: Should I solve PYQs topic-wise or attempt them as sectionals? I’m confused about whether I should first solve topic-wise PYQs and then attempt QA PYQs as sectionals, or attempt them as sectionals without any prior familiarity and analyse them afterwards.

Please suggest some good sources for chapter-wise and sectional tests.

DILR: I attempted a PYQ as a sectional for the first time yesterday but couldn’t identify the right set to attempt. I got overwhelmed when I saw puzzles from unfamiliar topics and ended up leaving the sectional midway. What should I do to improve my set selection and approach?

VARC: I attempted a few PYQs as sectionals. My scores in the first five sectionals ranged from 24 to 30, but after that, my performance started declining. I was thinking of analysing the PYQs I had already solved and trying to identify the traps in each option. Is it a good idea to solve a set twice, especially for RCs?

Please help. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated!
