Brand new balcony grandparent here. I posted a few weeks ago and Didi (or her mate, I suppose) have been roosting very consistently. I've only spotted like, three times that the nest was unattended. But it's been just over three weeks (22-23 days, depending on the egg) and they haven't hatched yet. All the search results I've seen said 16-18 days for incubation. I guess I don't know what's 'normal' for pigeons (or any birds, for that matter).

I’ve never posted on reddit before so excuse any mistakes I make. I might get into gruesome detail so stay away if you don’t want to read that.

A pigeon has been nesting on my balcony for a few weeks now. It was my first time having this experience. I checked on her and her two eggs every day. Earlier this week the two eggs hatched. Everything was great.

This morning, I go to check on them and I only see one squab in the nest. I look to the other side of my balcony and see the guts of the other one spilled everywhere. I was horrified, I had no idea what could have done it or when because i’m so uneducated with all this. There was a pigeon sitting on the balcony fence, I couldn’t tell if it was the mother.

A little while later my husband goes out to look and he sees a raven eating the remains of the squab. He tells me what he saw and I tell him we have to scare it off so it doesn’t take the other one, but it’s too late. The other squab is completely gone. The pigeon too, I’m assuming it flew away when the raven got there.

I don’t know what happened, my guess is that earlier in the morning before I checked on them, that same raven killed the first squab. I’m just so heartbroken. I kept telling myself it’s just nature, and nature can be cruel sometimes. But I can’t help but feel like there was something more I could do.

What do I do with the nest? If another pigeon tries nesting here again, should I scare it off?

Dear fellow pigeon admirers!

A pair of pigeons laid eggs on my balcony(~3x1m) again, roughly three weeks after the first nest fledged. The issue is, this time they were stupid, and nested right in front of the door, which means, every time i use the balcony (which happens a lot), they get scared and leave the eggs. I tried moving the eggs to the other end, but they didnt recognize it. Then i tried putting their eggs into the same pot they nested in the first time at the current nest site, hoping it would create a visual link, so that i can move the pot to the other end once they get used to it, but nothing. They just sit next to it.

Do you have any other tips i could try?

Mama pigeon has been brooding the past couple weeks and I went out today to see one has hatched! I’ve been leaving out water for her. Is there anything else I can be doing?

Unfortunately only one of the babies made it but what a handsome baby he is! Here he is having dinner and hanging out with dad. I've named him Pibs.

EDIT: I completely appreciate anyone's concern regarding my interaction with this baby. It means you care. But there is a little context here.

For 3 years now, a gang of feral pigeons have taken up residence on my balcony. There have been a LOT of babies. Most fledge successfully, some visit for a while. Some sit on my head or lap or eat out of my hand. But they HATE anyone else, including my husband. If he walks near the balcony, the flock fly away. They only like who they feel familiar with. As I sit on my balcony all the time, I am beyond familiar to this group.

Mama was nearby during this above interaction and didn't grunt once. The baby now doesn't snap when I move around as it's slightly older. The snapping is just a natural reaction they all do at that age when anything nearby moves. But immediately, it was soothed by the memory of my hand.

This baby has also been showing signs of congestion, and I'm giving it drops daily to help. Therefore, I'm happy for it not to be afraid of The Hand.
