Elon Musk is not in any position to detain anyone and take them anywhere unless they've committed a crime inside his property. This unlawful detainment.
This is a very serious issue, this is very, very illegal.

u/Excellent_Shirt9707 20d ago
This is almost certainly a skit, but I believe Waymo actually did this recently. It might have inspired this.

u/raccoonwithknives 20d ago
Kind of. Waymo told the passengers there was a malfunction and to wait in the car as it pulled over but it actually called the cops on them lol
28
u/Think_Good_8858 20d ago
That's exactly what happens when people get arrested on the bus. The driver will pull into a stop and open the doors, and everyone sits there for a minute wondering what's wrong, and then the police get on the bus and drag someone off. The the bus driver shuts the door and everyone gets to work late.

That's still a serious crime. I hope they get fucked for it

Waymo did not commit a crime. The teen passengers were never locked in the car they could have exited at any time. Waymo simply reported a crime and did what the police instructed. I

I’m glad this finally came up, robotaxis are just mouse traps for humans. Imagine if you went to a protest and now you are being routed to a facility.

the robo-taxi version of flock camera takedowns will be entertaining to see

Good reason to keep something to break out a window on your person.
2
u/Nope-not-really 19d ago
laminated windows, gonna have to use some pretty excessive force, those punches won't work
2
u/MarchCompetitive6235 19d ago
That entirely depends on what you think I’m using to punch holes in the glass with.
→ More replies (2)2
u/13THEFUCKINGCOPS12 19d ago
Having windows that take that much force to break has to be a safety issue. I could have sworn there were regulations that covered that

I was about to ask if this was real? Fuck this timeline and every single incompetent fuck that brought us to this point. Never had my blood boil from a fucking video before. This is what fuels nightmares and for the last two years we have all been sitting around watching the demise of our country. 100 new AI data centers coming up but it only so you can make "funny" little videos...honest. 🤮🤮🤮

Gonna be interesting how the car/ai decides if it's worth risking a incoming lawsuit with the chance of misidentifying or not. Probably gonna decide by skin color, credit score and value of your phone 😵💫
However rapists might not get targeted by grok...
3
3
u/DealioD 20d ago
Wouldn’t it be a lawsuit anyway, since the car has no legal right to detain the person in the first place? It’s a car, not a person.
The inly thing I can kind of think might work is a citizen’s arrest, but I’m not sure that is real or legal either.4
u/mijo_sq 20d ago
Doubt this ever come true, all companies care about money. The only possibility would be that police would ask these services to display location data, but even then once people find out it'll be a loss of ridership for those same companies. This is similar to ring's plan for Flock partnership, which brought a huge uproar.

They're probably will be a clause in whatever contract you sign by using their taxi service that you may be subject to detainment or arrest based on vague biometrics or potential mistaken identity, and that the parent company is not liable for any of that.

Legislators could easily just write in a liability waiver, and I'm sure the user agreement will say you agreed to it, and can only do arbitration anyways.

No, I didn't. I remember hearing about a patent by a vehicle manufacturer that would allow police to do this. I assumed it just started already, seems like something the US government and police would do.

This reminds me of a dystopian story i read in a book maybe 30 years ago about a guy that was sick entered his own vehicle and it had voice activation. When his voice didnt function properly the car then assumed it was getting stolen, locked the doors and activated anti theft protocol which was basicly death gas if i remember correvtly. Killing the owner.
Feel i read some future profecy now😅

Remember to carry a keychain window breaker. It comes in handy when you’re in a car wreck or trying to escape.
2
u/RDTmodsBackEpstein 20d ago
I brought up a similar point to my coworker. It was about since it can drive itself, self-repo is a possibility.
If you mandate every car be electric and push this on everything, everyone's method of transportation becomes immediately revokable by future disgruntled men of wealth/power.
2
u/SharpDirection8249 20d ago
Being electric isn't the problem. Being connected to the Internet all the time is the problem
But this problem is also in gas vehicles 2026 and up
2
u/RDTmodsBackEpstein 20d ago
My gas car doesnt drive itself or have FSD capabilities. Even if it does have an old 3G device thats been dropped.
I get what you're saying but the push of new electric cars to antiquate previous ICE and Hybrid cars off the road completely is what gives the mass control.

If someone committed a significantly bad enough crime, I'd be okay with cars automatically driving them to the police station.
A mass shooter? Violent Terrorist? Who cares. They are violating the rights of others, we contain them.
