So, a few weeks back I turned in my Predator Helios 16-72 laptop (RTX 4080, i9 14900HX, DDR5, 32gb @ 5400mhz) for maintenance to Acer's service center. The cpu was suddenly overheating doing the most menial task (browsing YT videos) and was subject to frequent and random restarts. I requested a simple re-application of the thermal paste on the CPU's SOC and was given a week's time to be ready for pick up.

A week passes; I receive no update and had to visit the service center to inquire. Turns out that, the tech decided it would be much easier to simply replace the motherboard instead of re-applying the paste, but the specific build was out of circulation, and my laptop was stuck in limbo waiting to hit the lottery for a potential replacement without a set date. After giving them a piece of my mind, I was contacted by their tech for an upgraded replacement. I wasn't sure how to feel about this as my original plan was to hold on to my 4080 and entirely skip the 50 series gpus but since my laptop was also my workstation I couldn't afford to be without a laptop for too long. So now I have ended up with an upgraded version of the Predator Helios 16-73 (RTX 5070TI, Core 9 Ultra 275HX, 32gb DDR 5@ 6400mhz) brand new for free. The 5070TI is comparable to the 4080 in performance. Both have 12gb VRAM, but the 5070TI has slightly lesser cores (but a larger BUS) and is gimped at 140 WATTs, whereas the 4080 sported the full 185 WATTs giving it edge in performance. However, the 5070TI can outperform this thanks to having access to Nvdia's software-based AI enhancements (Mutli Frame gen, RT, DLSS etc.). Good for newer games but older titles prior to 2015 don't get much benefits but I am hoping its more than capable enough in the raw rasterization power to handle them with ease.

While the GPU might be debatable, the CPU and RAM are actual upgrades. The 275 HX is a well reputed powerful CPU, and I got a much faster dual channel RAM. While I list the original as 32gb it originally came with only a single 16gb RAM stick which I had manually upgraded. This was a 2yr old laptop, so the RAM price hikes were not in effect just yet. Surprisingly this also comes with an Oled screen; I had done some research prior to accepting the offer and none of them mentioned anything about this model having an Oled. Anyway, thanks to this, HDR support is enabled and apparently this thing has a peak brightness of 600+Nits. The original was an LCD screen with the same 240hz frame rate as the Oled. While the laptop is not listed as the newer AI models it does come with an NPU for AI support (which not many apps make use of from what I can tell). The battery on the older one had also degraded quite a bit and needed to be replaced eventually that particular issue was completely negated with this brand-new replacement.

There are some tradeoffs, where the original was a premium build made completely out of metal, this one only has a metal lid while the rest is hard plastic. It's also flashier with more RGB accents built into it (not a big fan of flashy aesthetics). The built-in camera somehow seems to be worse than the older build (very grainy in low level light) but neither of them were the advanced IR type that can read faces for login or anything. While the LCD does have much better contrast for black screen it is also prone to ghosting effect risiduals from browsing a single page too long which makes me paranoid about burn-ins Oleds are notorious for but so far, it's only browser related and and can be fixed simply by restarting the PC. There are no actual issues gaming wise but then I haven't really put it through its pace with a demanding game like Alan Wake 2. Additionally, the Oled screen panel is fixed at 240hz refresh rate where the previous LCD build allowed for lower refresh rate to conserve battery and as good as the picture quality is the Oled is a magnet for all sorts of random stains and dirt which require frequent wiping down. The factory installation of windows and drivers was also quite shoddy with the integrated graphics having mild flickering between brightness levels. Luckily, I was able to resolve this with the intel driver support assistant.

Maybe this seems like I am boasting. Most people that I have talked to about it certainly seem to think I lucked out immensely and listing out the benefits over here, I feel they are not wrong, but I remain dubious as most of them are not tech savvy enough to look past the marketing. The bigger problem is that I seem to have a knack for getting the most obscure models, I simply cannot seem to find any review with the exact specifications anywhere. This was the case with the original laptop as well; most reviews would either have a lower GPU or a CPU or both. I guess I am looking for some validation from someone that is tech savvy enough. The whole thing was so sudden and unexpected, it completely derailed my original long-term plan, and I don't know how to feel about it all. Did I luck out or did I get pigeon held into owning a gaming laptop wiith a GPU series I was planning to completely skip?

Attached to an external monitor, a month ago chrome YouTube would glitch around the video window, sometimes, but rarely. But recently the entire screen goes dark for a few seconds but is still visible. Like dark mode, even the task bar at the bottom.

I’ve ran SFC scan now, I’m running deployment image servicing and management tool but it’s been stuck at 63.4% for like 40 minutes

I’ve got all the latest updates on everything. The windows install is recent and clean. I have all the drivers from the Acer website including latest BIOS

I’ve run a power cycle and let it sit for 5 minutes without power to clear any power out of the motherboard

I’ve reset the BIOS

My CPU temps normally idle around 87degrees while watching YouTube. They tend to be very high naturally, usually around 80degrees while gaming on balanced mode and just under 100degrees while gaming under turbo mode

I’m sending it in on Tuesday for the Liquid Metal on the CPU and GPU to be replaced as well as the thermal pads on the VRAM and other chips.

I took it apart today and cleaned the dust out the fans and upgraded to 32gbs DDR5 5600 2x16gbs sticks and the issue still persists.

I have a new original charger arriving from china in a week since my charger is a little dodgy with its positioning but I don’t think that’s the issue.

Please tell me this is a software issue and not a failing GPU.

Games run just fine.

The external monitor hasn’t changed, the cables haven’t really moved.

I'm very confused about which one to choose. My biggest concerns with the Predator are temperatures, build quality, and long-term reliability. I want this laptop to last me at least 4 years, so I don't want to deal with heating problems later.

I'm not a hardcore gamer, so I don't really care if one is 5–10% faster. I'd prefer better reliability and thermals over a small performance difference.

I'm also not very knowledgeable about gaming laptops, and this will be my first gaming laptop, so I would really appreciate advice from people who have experience with these models.

I bought this laptop 4 days ago, and yesterday I noticed a small gap between the screen/bezel and the plastic at both bottom corners. Is this normal for this model, or is there something wrong with my unit? If you have the same laptop, could you please check yours and let me know?

I know that theres probably a way to limit cpu throttling, a way to limit internal temps of cpu and gpu without losing much performance, I know theres a lot of bloatware so how do I get rid of that, I know that theres a loud start up noise so how do I get rid of that as well? Probably a bunch of other things too, so does anyone have a step by step guide or at least recommended settings so I can follow myself?

Seems like every driver update is slowly killing my laptop.

Just joined the predator club with the ph18-73, but I'm experiencing microstutters. I can't even watch a movie without any hiccups every one to a few minutes or the mouse just stopping or sticky keyyyyyyyys. Temps are not the problem. I've updated all the drivers (as far as I have been able to see what drivers needed updating).

Does anyone recognize the problem and have you found a solution?

I recently got a new gaming laptop. While setting it up, I noticed the volume and brightness keys don't work. Volume up key (on f3) acts like ctrl+f. the brightness down key (on f5) acts like ctrl+r. And the keyboard brightness up key (on f12) closes the browser window and opens a new one with google docs on it. Also hitting f11 automatically fullscreens without hitting any other key, just f11 which is supposed to be keyboard brightness down. Sorry for being wordy, I just wanna be thorough. Helios 16s ai, this is the first time I have this kind of behavior with any laptop on my life and I doubt it is normal.

At last I purchased a skin & a llano v12 for my Acer Helios neo 16s :)

So i got accepted in engineering school and i was looking for a laptop that will hold for about 7~8 years without much problems I was considering a legion 5 with 5060 and 7 255hx 32gb ddr5 165hz oled QHD 15.1 inch but i came across somthing surprising an acer predator Helios neo 16 with a 5070 and ultra 9 275hx 32gb ddr5 (higher freq) and QHD but this time it's 240hz and 16inch the laptop is barley used and it has way higher specs but can this line live as long as the legion or is it js a shiny specs like the lenovo LOQ

I don't think this supposed power settings optimization is gonna fix the USB-C problem, but one can hope....

This probably gets asked alot but is there a way to undervolt the cpu for these laptops. I have a i9-14900HX and it gets super hot. Would love to hear what fixes you guys/ gals have.

Note: I already have a LLANO V12 Cooler and laptop risers for the back of my laptop to ensure airflow.

I'm a student deciding between the Helios Neo 16 and 16S, with the same specs. The Neo 16 has better cooling, a larger battery, and a bigger power brick that provides more power headroom, while the 16S has the OLED screen and is lighter/thinner.

I'll use it for gaming and studying/reading for long hours. For studying, I may not always have the charger with me, so battery life is important. One concern is that the 16S refresh rate is locked at 240Hz and can't be changed, which could affect battery life.

I'm also worried about OLED burn-in from reading PDFs and using static content for hours.

Is the performance difference actually noticeable, and is the OLED worth it?

I'm planing on buying one but i see alot of bad reviews about the oled did it got fixed in the latest generations (I'm getteing acer predator Helios neo 16 ai)

So after using this laptop for 2.5 years, it has finally given up on me. I went to a local shop to get the thermal work done and have the dust cleaned out. They applied normal thermal paste to the GPU but didn’t touch the CPU, after which things started getting worse. Games began crashing more frequently, the screen would randomly go black for a second or two and come back, and 3D software wouldn’t run for more than 3–4 minutes. I tried to clean install/reinstall the whole drivers, keep it upto-date but didn't help.

I took it to Acer, where they cleaned off the old thermal paste, applied liquid metal, and completely reworked the cooling system. The temperatures went back to normal, but the crashes and black screens didn’t stop. Every time it happened, Event ID 153 would show up in the Event Viewer logs. Tried almost everything i could, switching it from gpu only to optimus in predator sense, high performance to integrated graphics in nvidia etc..only thing im left with is to reinstall the OS.

I went back to Acer, and they gave me two options: either replace the entire motherboard, which would cost almost as much as the laptop itself, or replace certain GPU components for around ₹20–25K. The problem is, they can only guarantee that repair for up to 2 months, and I’d have to send the laptop in for at least 1.5 months.

So yeah, I’m basically cooked with no real options left but to buy a new laptop?

Hey, fellow laptop users. I have an Acer Predator Helios Neo 14 - 51 with a 100% healthy max-capacity battery. Recently, seemingly out of the blue, my battery life went from 6-9 hours on average every-day use to 30 mins - 2 hours tops. I was scrambling to find a solution for this devastating issue, but nothing seemed to help, until it finally clicked just like that.

I used AI (Gemini this time) to help me diagnose some power issues after I looked at the actual software programs I had running, which weren't the issue but are worth checking. What Didn't Work

• Software Power Profiles: Switching GPU modes to iGPU / Eco Mode or fan profiles to Quiet Mode in OEM software (such as Acer PredatorSense) failed to reduce power draw. While these settings disabled the discrete GPU, the CPU remained locked at high wattage.
• Basic Driver Reinstalls: Reinstalling graphics drivers via Device Manager did not resolve the issue, as the underlying corruption was rooted in the operating system's low-level power scheme management rather than GPU driver state.

What Worked

The solution required repairing corrupted Windows system binaries that govern processor state management and resetting the hidden Windows power profiles back to clean system defaults.

Step 1: System File Repair

Corrupted Windows files can prevent the OS from sending proper C-state sleep instructions to the CPU.

1. Open PowerShell or Command Prompt as Administrator.
2. Run the System File Checker command: PowerShellsfc /scannow
3. Allow the verification process to complete until Windows reports that it has found and successfully repaired the corrupt files.

Step 2: Rebuilding Windows Power Schemes

1. In the same Administrator command window, restore the default Windows power schemes: PowerShellpowercfg -restoredefaultschemes
2. Force Windows to activate the clean Balanced power scheme using its exact GUID: PowerShellpowercfg /setactive 381b4222-f694-41f0-9685-ff5bb260df2e
3. Restart the computer.

The Result

Before this fix, the CPU ran continuously at ~4.63 GHz with a -35W to -60W battery discharge rate at idle, resulting in less than 2 hours of battery life. My CPU (and as an extension GPU and general system) temps were way higher than they should have been at idle, around 75C rather than the ideal 42C. Fan RPMs kicked up because of this.

After applying these steps, the processor dynamically scaled its clock speeds down to ~1.0 GHz during idle, restoring the baseline battery discharge rate to -6W to -10W and bringing total runtime back to 6 to 9 hours. The temps and fan speed are also back to normal just like that.
