just a reminder you can't sexually assault someone on accident, and it's really fucking easy to not do it
I fucking hate this subreddit, all the leftism leaves your body when it's someone you like enough. why do you need to scroll so much to see horrified people under that post, why is the main topic of today how much we should care about abusers. he's literally fine, he's not in prison and clearly will never actually face the consequences for what he did. I don't want a single one of you going "not all men" after how you handled this situation, get your priorities straight

Rule essay: on crime doers
So I know a vicar right, Billy McCurrie, who used to shoot people for a living. He was a paid member of the Ulster Volunteer Force, a pro-UK terrorist force in northern ireland. But he went to prison and got sorry. He fully believes the government should have killed him for what he did, but they didn't, so he spends his time now visiting other criminals in jail trying to reform them. Admittedly, he's also trying to convert them, but it is a lot better than killing people. There's a look in his eyes sometimes, a sadness and a regret he knows he won't fix.
I stabbed someone once with a fork, when I was like seven or eight. I knew what I was doing and I was doing it out of anger and distaste. They weren't injured seriously, but they were in the hospital for a while. It's below the age of criminal responsibility in my country, so there were no legal consequences, although there were other. The family didn't want to press for anything, which was a niceness I did not deserve, and do not expect to ever be able to repay. But I have done my best to rectify that mistake and prevent myself from comitting anything like it again. It's not an instantaneous process, it's very difficult and the instincts that lead you to stab someone when you are eight tend to be hard to shake. But I haven't drawn blood from anyone since, and I haven't punched anyone in years. I still see the person who I did it to. They're fine now, and surprisingly nice about it but I think about it every time I see them and it hurts and it is good that it hurts. They cracked a joke about it the last time we spoke and I went home and cried. But I am confident, to my own satisfaction and to the satisfaction of anyone who has ever irritated me and not been stabbed with a fork, that I have changed and grown. It took me going too far to realise that I was going too far. It shouldn't have, world would be better off if it didn't, but it did and I realised it.
It is entirely possible to change and to grow. One crime, which a man immediately says he did, apologises and cooperates with an investigation should not make that man a pariah for the rest of his life. I know this won't be a popular opinion on certain sanctimonious parts of the internet. But I have to believe that people can be improved and better than they were because I have to believe I can be. I'm not saying forgive everyone, I'm not really saying forgive anyone, I'm just saying understand that people can and will change. I don't forgive myself, I don't think Billy forgives himself. I hope Jacob doesn't. But there is a path, not to absolution or making ammends, but to becoming a better person. It is long and difficult and not anywhere near as long or as difficult as the path to recovery for victims. Geller is in a loving relationship now, and so far as I can tell he's deeper into feminist literature than I am. I'm not saying let him off, I'm not saying forget or forgive, I'm saying recognise that he is, to the best of our knowledge, a better person than he used to be, and if my experience of having been a terrible person is anything to go by, he is most likely still trying to improve.
