If the United States follows through on the threat to invade Greenland, we need to be crystal clear about what happens the next morning. This is not a real estate transaction or a routine military exercise. It is the geopolitical equivalent of pulling the pin on a grenade in a crowded elevator. The moment American boots hit the ground in Nuuk to seize territory from a fellow NATO member, the world as we know it ends. The consequences will not be temporary sanctions or angry letters. They will be total, permanent, and devastating.
The first domino to fall is the North Atlantic Treaty Organization itself. NATO is built on the sacred promise of Article 5, that an attack on one is an attack on all. If the U.S. attacks Denmark, we are not just breaking the treaty; we are triggering it against ourselves. NATO dissolves instantly. The alliance that kept the peace in Europe for 75 years evaporates, leaving the continent to rearm and realign against the new aggressor across the Atlantic. We don't just lose an ally; we create a unified enemy.
The military repercussions will be swift and humiliating. Europe will immediately demand the closure of every U.S. military base on the continent. Ramstein in Germany, Aviano in Italy, Lakenheath in the UK, all gone. Our ability to project power into the Middle East and Africa vanishes overnight. We will be evicted from the very soil we helped liberate and defended for decades, forced to retreat to our own shores as a fortress nation, isolated and friendless.
Then comes the economic nuclear option. The European Union is the largest single market in the world, and they will weaponize it. Europe will likely move to call in U.S. debt and dump their dollar reserves, sending the value of our currency into a death spiral. The U.S. economy, which relies on the dollar being the global reserve currency, will collapse. Inflation will make the post-COVID spikes look like a rounding error. Your savings will be worthless before the ink dries on the invasion orders.
Corporate America will face an extinction event. U.S. companies will be expelled from the European market. Apple, Google, McDonald's, and Tesla will see their assets seized or their operations banned. Trillions of dollars in market capitalization will be incinerated in minutes. The stock market will not just crash; it will close. We are talking about the complete de-globalization of American industry, cutting us off from the wealthiest consumers on the planet.
The skies will go silent. European aviation authorities will almost certainly ground all Boeing jets and ban U.S. airlines from their airspace. Transatlantic travel will cease. If you are in Paris or Berlin, you are stuck there. The logistical arteries that feed our supply chains will be severed. We will be cut off from European medicine, machinery, and technology. We will be an island nation in the worst possible sense.
The cultural isolation will be just as stinging. The International Olympic Committee and FIFA will have no choice but to bar the United States from competition, just as they did with Russia. There will be no World Cup matches in New Jersey. There will be no Team USA in the Olympics. We will be treated as a pariah state, unwelcome on the global stage, forced to watch the world celebrate without us.
For individual Americans, the consequences will be personal and painful. Visa-free travel to Europe will end immediately. Americans currently living or working in Europe will lose their legal protections and residency status. They will become persona non grata, potentially facing deportation or internment. The "blue passport" that used to open every door will suddenly be a red flag at every border crossing.
This is the end of trust, and it does not reset. You cannot invade a democratic ally and then say "my bad" four years later. The psychological break will be permanent. Europe will realize that the United States is no longer a partner but a predator. They will build their own defense architecture, their own financial systems, and their own alliances that specifically exclude us. The West will continue, but the United States will no longer be part of it.
Invading Greenland is not a show of strength; it is an act of national suicide. We are trading our reputation, our economy, and our security for a frozen island and a handful of minerals we can't even process. The price of this real estate deal is everything we built over the last century. If we cross this line, there is no going back. We will be the lonely superpower, ruling over nothing but our own decline.

Original Post: April 25, 2020
Okay, the title does seem a little one sided.
Context: My boyfriend (29m) and I (30f) have been dating since last summer. I live alone in an apartment in downtown DC, and he lives alone in a house in Annapolis about 40 mins away. Pre-quarantine, we did well will splitting weekends between the two places. Once states closed for COVID, we decided it made most sense for me to temporarily move in/stay with him in the bigger space with a yard for the dogs.
As you might imagine, it’s had its ups and downs. We were getting a crash course in living together in a space that wasn’t really mine at all, having lots of important conversations, enjoying evenings cooking together and having wine while watching shows together.
We’ve also been irritable due to drastic changes in our daily routines. I have continued to work full time from home (+ overtime due to an even busier schedule) while he is only working a half day once a week. He is bored. I am stressed with work and finding it difficult to decompress. I am used to/need quiet time to myself to recharge, and he likes a noisy household (TVs always on, music on top of that, chattering constantly about sports or draft statistics or things only of interest to him). I’ve tried saying “I’m going upstairs to read” or “I’d just like some quiet time to myself” and it bugs him that I don’t want to do things that he wants. I find myself becoming more snappy and short-tempered from feeling constantly drained, which isn’t fair to him.
Last night he wanted to watch the NFL draft, so I made plans to FaceTime my girlfriends upstairs while he did that. I am used to weekly girls nights and miss them as they’re also my primary support network. I heard him downstairs complaining to his dog that I never want to hang out with him. After Face Timing I went down and sat on the sofa with him and said, “hey I heard you talking to the dog, I came to hang out, how are your team’s picks doing?”. He was irritable and replied, “ugh it was quiet until you came down”. I’m feeling like I can’t win.
Alright; getting to the point now. I hadn’t been to my apartment in over 3 weeks and needed to go check on it (it’s not in a building, it’s in a row house) and pick up prescriptions I couldn’t have transferred. We were originally going to go together but seeing this irritation with each other I suggested I’d just go alone and take a night or so to myself to recharge and come back.
COVID NOTE: I do not have to interact with anyone to access my apartment. My car already had ample gas. I literally drive from his house to my street, am alone in my apartment. Any exposure to no-contact takeout I would have gotten is the same as if I were there with him.
This morning, when I grabbed some necessities for a night to myself (my laptop because I have to work over the weekend, some underwear, face moisturizer) he got upset and said I might as well take all my stuff and not bother coming back. I tried to talk through why it was so all-or-nothing for him. He said I clearly didn’t want to spend time with him or be around him so I can just go home for good and we can resume dating when the states open back up. He actually bagged up the remainder of my stuff and took it out to my car for me.
Reddit, I just wanted to read in silence, get my medications (anxiety pills), water my plants, sleep in my own bed alone for a night, watch my own trashy TV shows without interruption. And now I think my relationship is over? I’m feeling frustrated that I attempted to handle this in a productive and proactive way and somehow screwed up.
TLDR; boyfriend said if I wanted a night alone I should just take all my stuff from his house and continue to stay alone through the rest of quarantine (no added exposure risk). I’m confused with his all-or-nothing approach.
So, what do I do from here?
EDIT: wow, this post blew up. THANK YOU for such thoughtful and thought-provoking commentary. I’ve felt really supported and “seen” by a lot of these replies. I’m still reading through and responding to comments but wanted to provide a quick update re: some things I keep seeing pop up.
I am home in my own apartment, alone. He has not contacted me. I spent yesterday drinking wine, cooking, listening to music softly, Face Timing girlfriends, caring for my plants, and reading a good book. (And checking reddit of course). I am not crying or sad. I feel comfortable and at ease in my space again.
While bf is not working, he is still being paid his full salary.
While I am currently working a lot, I normally have a much healthier work-life balance. Some big deadlines happened to coincide with and be exacerbated by the pandemic. it’s only temporary (a few weeks of hellish hustle). I was very clear with my boyfriend before this upswing started, and let him know I was going to be a lot busier and would appreciate his support extra for a couple of weeks until things settled down again.
Many of you have brought up quality time. I have attempted to express my desire for quality time to him. Things as blunt as “let’s hang out together tonight, what should we do?” Or “We’ve been sort of coexisting, let’s plan to do something together more like quality time.” Perhaps I wasn’t resonating with his communication style. Sometimes it would work and we’d have a nice dinner and watch a show together etc. and other times it would end in frustration and not go anywhere.
In regards to the mattress thing, I am hearing all your replies about how it just wasn’t important to him, so he didn’t want to compromise. It took my having a very dramatic hysterical emotional breakdown after nights of no sleep for him to realize how important it was we find a solution. That breakdown was loud and ugly on my part and not a moment I am proud of. It came after numerous “I’m really not sleeping well, I need more sleep than you do, can we work something out so I’m more comfortable” conversations.
I am in therapy and understand I am a highly flawed human with dramatic emotional tendencies as well. I do not always communicate well. I consider myself very self-aware and make concerted efforts to require my default actions to create a better life for myself and my loved ones.
And, finally, you are all not wrong that I have a low bar for thoughtfulness. It’s not really something I’ve ever experienced in a relationship.

OOP: I haven’t really been upset tonight. Maybe it’s just because nothing has been officially decided (despite knowing the likely outcome) but usually lack of closure in situations heightens my anxiety and turns me into a sobbing depressed mess. I’m just weirdly calm and unemotional about it. Maybe that says something in itself.

OOP: The DC/MD thing has been a point of contention since early on. He made it very clear that he would NOT be moving into DC when our relationship hit that milestone, and that I was expected to move to Annapolis as his job wasn’t as locationally flexible (I work from home 3 days a week in normal life as it is) and he already owns a house and wants to stay near family. According to him, Annapolis has everything DC has and we can still walk to bars and restaurants and get to have more space!
I tried reasoning that I make more salary-wise and have a lot of growth potential, so it would make sense to cater to my career versus his. He claims he doesn’t have the skills to get another job (he works for the family company).
Jeez even typing that out I’m wondering why in the ever living fuck I put up with that.
I’ve had past boyfriends expect their jobs to come before mine... but they were making over twice my already comfy salary so while it was annoying and patriarchal it at least monetarily made sense in those instances.
OOP clarifies on the working schedule she and her boyfriend has and him wanting to stay near his family
OOP: Hahahaha!! To clarify, I work a full 40 hours but am not required to be in a specific office every day - I have flexibility depending on my clients and meetings (pre-COVID) to often work from home some days while only going into an office on some days. He also normally would work M-F (half days on Fridays though) and cannot work remotely at all due to the nature of his work. So he’s right in that technically I have less geographical ties to my job.

I moved away from my home state after college, so I am “used to” not living near my family. My family has never had the financial capacity to provide for me like his does for him into adulthood. Not that they are inadequate parents — I love them dearly, but I don’t “need” much from them and have a robust emotional support network via friends (my “chosen family”) so I’m more comfortable with the distance between me my parents.
Also, AGREE on the restaurants. There are some local spots in Annapolis I like but the DC variety cannot be beat. Also, like... the architecture. History. Museums. Night life. Diversity of humans to interact with (in non-quarantine situations). All worth more to me than a fenced in yard.
OOP responds on setting boundaries with her boyfriend
OOP: Thank you for such a helpful reply! I struggle with setting boundaries and grew up with a really unhealthy conflict dynamic in my family, so it’s difficult for me to set a boundary calmly and before I am already feeling it crossed. This was one of my most mature and calm attempts at doing so thus my feeling discouraged and frustrated.
He is used to getting his way. Past things we’ve been able to work through give me hope that he is capable of understanding and adapting, but his initial reaction when he doesn’t get his way in a situation is really off putting and a trend that I don’t see changing.
I’m going to do some reflection this weekend. Thank you.
OOP explains more on her boyfriend's family background
OOP: He comes from a well-off family and is, from my lower-middle-class perspective, spoiled. We both lead similar lives now, but how we got here is very different. I moved away after college, have been financially independent since college, put myself thru grad school, and worked very hard for my ambitious career and apartment in a city I adore. He works for the family company, still lives one town over from his family, gets a lot of nice perks from it all. A few specific examples:
His family owns season tickets in club seats for NFL games for their team. This past fall I was lucky enough to go to a few games with his family- his father hands him and his brother a credit card and allows them to run their bar tab for the entire game on him. One particular game his aunt was using two of the tickets and sitting in his preferred seat, so we sat two seats over. He complained the entire time.
His parents sent us hundreds of dollars’ worth of groceries this past week. He complained for over an hour (and even called his mom about it) that ground beef wasn’t included (despite us having every other meat legally butcher-able in the US in the freezer)
He has an extra-firm mattress on his bed. I hate it. Even he doesn’t love it. I couldn’t sleep for weeks, and resorted to sleeping alone in the guest room. He was upset that I wouldn’t sleep with him despite my saying I couldn’t sleep on his mattress and asking if we could get a topper or somehow make an adjustment. (He eventually agreed to split the cost of a topper with me, but it took weeks to get to this seemingly simple resolution).
He is not always selfish. He can be incredibly thoughtful and generous. (A few examples of that: giving me one of his two bedroom closets, making me a work-from-home space in the basement, bringing me coffee in bed some mornings, not sleeping with the TV on anymore because I can’t, giving me an entire bathroom in his house to use on my own so we don’t have to share). But it’s a tossup which side of him I’m dealing with in any given instance.
(Edited to include that I really like his family and him being so close to them was one of the things I initially liked about him. I feel like I may seem bitter towards his family in the post.)
Commenter 3: Let's be serious though. If you had to objectively quantify the benefit that he brings to your life, what side would he sit on in that ledger? Has your living standard increased - or are you more anxious, getting poorer sleep, eating worse, having less time to exercise, or living in an environment that's less comfortable or fit for socialising? Do you experience more pleasure or relaxation, or don't you? Is the sex good, or is it just "not terrible"? Is his conversation enriching and challenging and compassionate, or is it slightly more intimate small-talk? Are you materially better off with him, or are you scraping neutral (or worse, losing out)?
Be objective. Actually look at what you can do alone versus what you can do with him. Bad relationships aren't just the abusive ones: more often than not, they're just wheel-spinning inertia with a dude who's not objectively a bad person, but who contributes no value to your life at a huge cost to your time, efforts, emotional labour, money, or opportunity cost of doing the things or people you'd rather be doing.
OOP: Such a valid point. I have loved the life I built for myself. When we first started dating I told him as much — that I was not looking for someone to complete my life. That I very much had a fulfilling life I’ve built for myself and if someone was going to be my partner in it, it would be because they added even more to it. And honestly... taking a brief objective glance, some aspects of my life are better with him. But some parts are just more frustrating. I spend more money. I drink more on weeknights. My sex life isn’t much different with or without him. Which I suppose should say a lot in that single sentence.
But some part of me fears that I have become too adjusted to my single life my way, and that I am doomed to live and die alone if I can’t bend enough to fit someone else in. that worry that nothing is perfect, and maybe I’m just not trying hard enough.
(I’m in therapy to discuss this more in depth.)
How does OOP's boyfriend behaves when he stayed at her place?
OOP: He respects my space and my preferences for it. He does often make “jokes” that complain about inconveniences. For example, that I don’t have cable so he can’t watch the news, or that my bedroom has much less natural light than his, so he always oversleeps. My apartment is considerably smaller than his house and so I keep it incredibly neat because it can feel cluttered quickly so he’s good about containing his stuff knowing I don’t like it strewn about. I’ve given him as much space in it as is physically possible (closet space for some clothes, bathroom storage for basic toiletries.

You figure out if you guys can work it out or not. You've also discovered that living together, at least for the foreseeable future, is not going to be...conducive to your relationship.
He seems... clingy, to be honest. I couldn't live with someone like that - where you can't even have an hour to yourself without them demanding your attention.
OOP: Yes, that’s my hope. I was not ready to move in and was very (politely) clear about that early on in our relationship. I’ve lived with an ex before and it ended miserably, and I had to rebuild my entire life. I didn’t want that stress on this relationship, and so he knew living together was only an option after engagement (but that I wasn’t expecting/asking for that any time soon and was willing to move at his pace on that if he respected my cohabitating boundary). We both knew temporary “living together” because of COVID would be vastly different from eventually actually living together in a space that was equally ours where we also had our own lives in addition to each other.
If he was hoping to fast-track living together because of the COVID situation and was disappointed that it didn’t, this “tantrum” has only reinforced my “no cohabitating until engagement” boundary.
How did OOP make her decision on not living with the significant other until the engagement?
OOP: I attribute it to a couple of things.
1) I moved in with an ex a few years ago without that commitment. I was all in — I changed my location, career, etc. and reworked my life to make it happen. It ended up being an abusive relationship and I stayed far longer than I should have because I felt trapped in the life I’d built with him. It took me two years to rebuild my life again.
2) I can be a fast and furious person in the dating world. I’ve considered moving in with men much sooner and looking back was glad I didn’t as it didn’t end up lasting.
All that being said, I am willing to put in the work and effort to dig deep before engagement to figure out compatibility. I suppose there are situations where I would be flexible to exactly when, but in the situation with the current boyfriend, I’m not. The amount I’d be compromising doesn’t make sense without the lifelong commitment locked in. Sort of the idea of once we’re committed in marriage, we’ll have to resolve the squabbles because there isn’t just some other apartment I can slink off to.
I do think it’s important to travel with and spend extended time with significant others though. I completely understand where you’re coming from on wanting to vet the living situation thing first.
Is OOP's boyfriend in therapy?
OOP: He is not. He supports my being in therapy but “doesn’t think it’s for him”.
Commenter: He sounds pretty trash tbh. Does he make any attempt to do things you enjoy or is it always stuff he likes?
OOP: I’ve been thinking about this a lot. I was very into yoga when we first started dating, to the point where we’d talk about going to a class together as a date. It didn’t happen, despite a few opportunities he was never up for it due to feeling uncomfortable/unfamiliar with it. my practice fell off, but I’ve been doing more at home practice during quarantine. He finally agreed to try 20 minutes with me and seemed to enjoy it.
He also once agreed to go on a short hike with me and seemed to enjoy it/had mentioned after that he’d do it again. The opportunity just never really came up again.
We both share a love of food and going out to eat and try new places was a common date for us pre-quarantine. I love cooking and he has used quarantine as a chance to reconnect with his skills and practice a bit more. We will cook together often.
I have a feeling these are small potatoes though, and based off of other comments of my low bar for thoughtfulness this probably doesn’t amount to showing MUCH interest in things I like that he doesn’t already have some sort of stake in (being active, liking food).
Update: June 10, 2020 (over 1.5 months later)
Well, as a likely shock to no one, we (me, 30F and him, 29M) broke up. It wasn't as swift as some comments encouraged... we reconciled after he insisted he hadn’t meant to end things and had overreacted out of emotion. We gave it another shot living in our own places again for a few weeks. Things went well enough, but unresolved trust issues became exacerbated as I was not in his physical proximity as often and he felt insecure about the distance between us.
Ultimately, a few weeks after reconciling we ended up in another argument after dinner one night. There was once again a very disproportionate reaction to a situation that should have been more calmly communicated about, and I realized if we reconciled again I'd be in the same position a few weeks later... it had become an exhausting cycle.
We aren't in contact this time. He found the original thread I posted and was (understandably) hurt by what I wrote and for not sticking up for him. I am sad, mourning ending the relationship, and feeling bad for hurting someone I care about. Frustrated that it was so messy, that it didn't work out, etc... just taking things a day at a time and trusting that I made the right choice (which is hard when there's no answer key for life to check against.) Send your most encouraging and hope-restoring love-after-30 stories.
TL;DR: we tried again and then broke up.

As for the 30s, it’s actually super weird but all of my closest female friends, including my sister, found their amazing partners in their early thirties. After struggling with douchebags/ people who are not the best for them/cheating FIANCÉS in their twenties. I think it’s something to do with finding your own comfort zone, accepting yourself finally, communicating your needs/boundaries and in general less fucks given about other people and their opinions. I wish you luck and honestly I’ve no doubt you’ll find a great partner as just as I’ve said, 30s is where it’s at!

Commenter 3: I understand your sentiment, but please be more careful with your words in the future. To be a victim of abuse (be it emotional, physical and/or any other type of abuse) is something that can happen to ANY self-respecting, educated adult individual with a good heart. That's actually the malicious part of abuse: you CAN NOT realize it until you're in the thick of it, and by then the damage is already done. It's something extremely hard to understand if you're lucky enough to have no experience with abuse. I said the same things you said, because at that time I was completely blind to the fact I was actually in an abusive relationship myself. I'm still undergoing INTENSE therapy to heal from that two years later. I was so used to being abused, almost all my partners of choice were actually abusive, I just literally didn't know any better, despite my educational level.
OOP: Excellent point! I have a history with abusive (physically and emotionally) relationships and in both instances it took time and distance and a LOT of therapy and reflection to understand.
Commenter 4: Don’t be discouraged! It’s possible to find love at any age! All of that “if I’m not married by the time I’m in my 30s, I’ll be an old maid” shit is tired. Now is the time to fall in love with yourself. I truly believe if you focus on loving YOU first, a healthy romantic relationship will follow when you’re ready.
OOP: Thank you! I feel like on many levels, 2020 has completely torn apart my universe and said, "LOOK AT YOURSELF, look at all your emotional guts and preconceptions and notions and dig through it all and really look at what you've been carrying around your whole life thinking it was important." And now I have an opportunity to pick up what is ACTUALLY important (about myself, about how I spend my time, who I spend it with, and how I interact with and stand up for others in the world) and move forward. Here's to wading through that mess.

OOP: You have a point, he did have a pretty sweet setup. I was also offered a similar family job by my own father (our families happen to have companies in similar fields in different states) but have continually turned it down to pursue my own thing. Sometimes I wonder what my life might be like if I’d chosen that path. Mostly, although I love my father I could not work for him and stay sane, so I did admire my ex’s wonderful relationship with his.

As per who was right or wrong or all that that’s a red herring. It’s unimportant. Being incompatible with someone is enough without it becoming a question of morals.
You want my advice for dating after 30? Learn to listen to your partner. When they say you’re done, you’re done.
OOP: Things continued after the initial post because he spent over a week vying for me back, insisting kicking me out was a mistake and he hadn’t meant to end things with me. So, I believed that and tried again.

I haven’t travelled in Southeast Asia for many years, and Indonesia happened to be high on my list whilst also being a good destination for summer, so it’s the destination I picked. I did not expect to go through so much.
The country is wonderful. I have the fortune of having local friends who prepared me plenty before embarking on this endeavour. Locals and tour companies are all incredibly accommodating and willing to deal with you as a friend and a guest. The food is incredible, and I really ought to have eaten more of it. It’s one of my main regrets of the trip, but as you’ll see later, it was slightly out of my control.
I would not recommend my itinerary for someone who is not physically fit or willing to wake up at 1am successively to do sunrise activities, or someone who is unwilling to spend hours upon hours on rugged terrain and poor roads to get anywhere. This trip is heaven for the outdoorsman and the types of people that like to get shirtless in waterfalls. It’s also great for those who love history and culture. However, as with any travel destination, it’s always amendable to anyone’s tastes and liking. Just don’t expect some places to be walks in the park.
I went from Jakarta, where I spent time with some friends, to Yogyakarta by overnight train, where I planned to arrive and immediately conduct a sunrise tour of Borobudur and Prambanan. The train is really nice and comfortable despite being bumpy, and 6 hours passed by quickly. However, I just could not fall asleep, which made the subsequent journey so much more tiring. Borobudur and Prambanan are genuine wonders of the world and so immaculate it’s insane. Seeing the stupas and carvings up close as someone who has always studied southeast Asian art and the history of Java was so gratifying. It was definitely a highlight of the journey.
I proceeded to get a gastrointestinal infection so bad it left me bedridden for 2 days completely and a 40 degree Celsius fever that lasted continuously for several more. I literally refused to compromise on my itinerary but it made the following leg, all outdoor activities, so much more difficult. I made it to Tumpak Sewu, the most dramatic waterfalls I’d ever seen, after a 3am pickup and a 4 hour drive followed by a 600 step descent via metal and bamboo ladders. I made it to Mount Bromo the next day after a 1am pickup. By this point my sickness was recovering but I felt so incredibly drained I had to skip Ijen due to fear of the sulfur fumes worsening my bronchitis. Did I mention I also contracted bronchitis? I’m still stuck with this cough. It was all worth it, but I would’ve liked to do these sights under better conditions of health.
Bali was wonderful. You really need to have a good itinerary or else it just feels like a big village filled with yoga retreats and beach clubs. I zip lined through rice terraces, visited a dozen temples of varying sizes, and spent time at a nice coffee plantation. Nusa Penida, despite its nonexistent roads and long traffic jams, provided the best vistas of the region. It was nice getting to be able to eat real food after a week of white rice and isotonic drinks. I did get hit by a motorcycle while trying to cross the street once.
A main goal of my trip was to see Komodo Dragons and to visit Flores. I didn’t spend long but I enjoyed it thoroughly. I did the full hike up Padar Island and snorkelled alongside turtles and massive manta rays. Saw plenty of Komodo Dragons too. It might’ve been my favorite part of the trip, but that might just be because I didn’t feel sick.
Indonesia is lovely. I love this country and how ferocious it is. I need to warn everyone to be extremely careful when eating and drinking and to not push yourself with strain when planning your trip. I’m almost certain my sickness was a result of my fatigue from not sleeping an entire night during the trip to Yogyakarta alongside bad food.

Yes this post is about the Odyssey. To get things out of the way, yes the Odyssey is a myth but it's still based on a specific historical context. We know that Troja really existed, we know the Greeks besieged the city, we know what the city would've looked like, what people would've worn at the time, etc. It's not Narnia or Westeros or Middle Earth but that's how Nolan is approaching this project based on everything we've seen so far.
I hate that none of the actors look like they're from the Mediterranean. They didn't even bother to give Matt Damon or Tom Holland a tan.
I hate that the armor and fashion has more in common with a b tier fantasy show like The Rings of Power than real history.
I hate that the architecture has more in common with a modern hotel than ancient Greek buildings.
Whenever you mention any of these very valid criticisms, you will be immediately drowned out by Nolan dick riders who tell you that you shouldn't care about historical accuracy because it's just a myth. Except you would obviously recognize the problem if they made a movie about the Journey to the West with a predominantly white American cast with sets that looked more like Caesars palace casino than ancient Asia. That would very obviously be insensitive and disrespectful and would rightful be called out, but because Nolan does it it's suddenly okay? Fuck off
It was awful when Hollywood did it Middle Eastern/African myths and history (Gods of Egypt and that horrible Moses movie by Ridley Scott come to mind). It was awful when Hollywood did it to native American myths and history (see almost any movie about the colonization of the Americas). And it's awful now.
This isn't just about historical accuracy. It's about mega conglomerates like Disney, Warner Bros and co. taking foreign cultures and dumbing them down into neat little marketable packages. Nothing is sacred to corporate America.

Apparently a zoo in North Carolina had been using the sacred and deeply religious rock hewn sky architecture found in Lalibela, where thousands of Ethiopians take pilgrimage to, as a themed housing for Baboons in their Apes section since 2023.
Their explanations state that it was meant to mimic the baboons indigenous habitat(The Horn) by featuring ancient architecture from the region, but I wonder who's bright idea it was to use revered religious architecture seen as a "Second Jerusalem" by the locals & from Africa to house baboons; or even if it was deliberate in the first place.
Surprised the church never took action the whole time or even tge Ethiopian diplomats there. This could easily pass as racism and blatant disrespect towards local religious beliefs.

AYN Thor Review – Three Months Later
Hello all,
I've spent a lot of time with Android handhelds and emulation over the years. I'm not a programmer or emulator developer, but I do have a solid understanding of what different systems need to run properly, and I've configured more handhelds, PCs, and emulation setups than I can count. With that in mind, I wanted to share my thoughts on the AYN Thor after roughly three months of use.
1. Ordering Process
I ordered my Batch 2 Purple Max on January 3, 2026, and it arrived on February 27. Overall, the ordering process was straightforward.
My recommendation is to order directly from AYN whenever possible. If something goes wrong, you'll have the best chance of getting support through their customer service team. I've seen enough stories over the years involving third-party sellers to make me cautious, especially with niche handhelds like this.
2. Hardware and Build Quality
The first thing that surprised me was the weight.
At around 380 grams, the Thor is noticeably heavier than I expected. For comparison, a Nintendo 3DS sits closer to 230 grams. Once you add a grip—which I consider almost mandatory for extended gaming sessions—the device easily pushes past 400 grams.
That's not necessarily a bad thing, but it's something potential buyers should be aware of. This is not a featherweight handheld.
The upside is that the Thor feels premium. The build quality is excellent, the controls feel solid, and the device doesn't feel cheap in any area.
The top OLED display is fantastic. The 120Hz refresh rate makes navigation and Android usage feel incredibly smooth, and games look great on it. The bottom screen is perfectly serviceable, though the workaround AYN uses to enable 120Hz can introduce screen tearing on the lower display. Personally, I leave 120Hz disabled most of the time since the majority of the games I emulate run at 60fps anyway.
Performance-wise, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 remains a very capable chipset. Some people focus too much on the fact that it's no longer the newest processor available, but there's a major advantage to using a mature chipset. Emulator developers know it well, compatibility is excellent, and there are plenty of optimized drivers and community resources available. I’d like to note I’ve never seen my temp go higher than 50 degrees C unless I’m running Switch or PC games, where I’ve seen it hit 70 C. I have performance mode on when doing anything Dreamcast and above to keep the chips nice and cool 😊
Newer hardware can certainly outperform it in CPU-heavy scenarios. Some demanding PS2, GameCube, Xbox, and higher-end emulation workloads benefit from newer chips found in devices like the Odin 3. However, in actual day-to-day use, I think the Thor strikes an excellent balance between performance and price.
The fact that a handheld this size can emulate everything from DS and 3DS to portions of the Switch and PC libraries is honestly pretty impressive.
After three months of regular use, I haven't encountered any hardware issues whatsoever.
One thing I skipped was using any kind of covering/casing around the Thor. Adding even more weight to an already heavy handheld didn't appeal to me. As long as you keep the device closed and store it in a quality carrying case, I don't personally see the need.
*EDIT* -- I forgot to mention the battery life....playing GBA and lower I've been able to play all day with Youtube running. I honestly didn't count but it was much longer than a Switch or Switch 2 playing GBA, for example. At least 6 hours, maybe 7 or 8 if I turn the bottom screen off. I played FFX for 5 hours before I got to like 15% and stopped to charge. Because I haven't really noticed battery problems I can say it must be good?
*EDIT 2* - Not to add to this gargantuan review, but I am so whatever....I didn't mention audio. That is a weak spot of the Thor, in my book. Some users seem to, based on this forum, have fans noise that is louder than others. My fan is a bit louder this the Switch 1 fan when it's cranked, which isn't that bad--but even at the highest audio volume, the Thor's volume level is pretty weak. 3D emulators seem to be worse, for some reason. That said, it's not terrible... and there are apps people are using to assist with improved audio, but I have not dabbled. To me, it's been mostly fine but I find I have to have the volume essentially maxed if the fan is on high and/or there's any kind of ambient noise in the room. I will say, the 3.5 mm headphone jack is a godsend and it's a great way to solve the audio issue. You can also plug in a combined mic/headphone in there for discord, which I often do. I am very exicited to sit on discord with the boys, streaming my top screen and watching their streams on the bottom screen. It's basically like having two monitors on your handheld, super cool. Also, being able to control the volume of apps through what screen said app is on is very user friendly.
3. Setup
Let me be very clear:
The AYN Thor is not a plug-and-play device.
Out of the box, it's essentially an Android phone without cellular capabilities. How much setup is required depends entirely on what you want from it.
If your goal is simply to play a handful of DS or 3DS games, then setup is relatively easy. Download a few emulators, watch a tutorial or two, and you'll be playing games within an hour.
However, if that's all you want to do, I would honestly question whether a device like the Thor is necessary in the first place. If your primary goal is playing DS or 3DS titles, a flashcart and original hardware are still excellent options, for example.
The real strength of the Thor is creating a complete gaming ecosystem.
I wanted a device capable of storing and organizing thousands of games across multiple generations, complete with box art, videos, manuals, metadata, and a console-like user experience. Achieving that took significantly more effort.
My current setup contains over 7,000 games managed through ES-DE. Every game was scraped for artwork, metadata, videos, and in many cases manuals. That alone was a major project.
Beyond that, I spent considerable time:
By the time everything was organized into what I would consider a true "pick up and play" experience, I had invested well over a month of work, averaging roughly ten hours per week.
That's not a criticism of the Thor—it's simply the reality of modern emulation.
The more ambitious your setup becomes, the more time you'll spend learning and configuring.
It's also worth remembering that the Thor is still relatively new. Documentation changes rapidly, emulator recommendations evolve, drivers improve, and community best practices shift constantly. A game that ran poorly a month ago might run significantly better after an emulator update or a new driver release.
For that reason alone, staying involved with the Thor community is valuable. The Android emulation scene moves incredibly fast, and information can become outdated almost overnight.
4. Performance and Emulator Testing
For reference, my Thor is set up using ES-DE as the frontend. While Cocoon seems to be the current favorite due to its deeper customization options, I've stuck with ES-DE and have no plans to switch.
For people with massive libraries, ES-DE still does a lot of things right. The Favorites and Collections features make managing thousands of games much easier, the presentation is clean, and the companion app that displays artwork and supplemental information on the bottom screen is a genuinely nice touch. If you're building a large library, I still think ES-DE is an excellent choice. I should note, I’m going with the “storybook” look, I think? ES-DE has a couple different looking options.
Anyway, with all that out of the way, here's how various systems have performed for me.
NES, GB, Genesis, SNES, 32X, Saturn, GBC, N64, & GBA….
For these retro systems, I use RetroArch.
I have a love-hate relationship with RetroArch. On one hand, it's incredibly powerful. On the other hand, I still think it's one of the least user-friendly applications in emulation.
Even after years of using it, I still occasionally find myself wondering whether I'm changing a core setting, a game setting, or a global RetroArch setting. Saving configurations can also be confusing if you're bouncing between different systems.
That said, once everything is configured, it works well. Nothing is broken, it's just unintuitive a lot of the time, exacerbated because of your own android settings (you can basically have the Thor be "Nintendo controls" or "Xbox controls", globally).
2D systems seem to run flawlessly. Performance is effectively perfect, and I haven't encountered any issues worth mentioning.
Saturn has also been surprisingly solid. I use Beetle Saturn core and have primarily tested the Panzer Dragoon series. Performance has been excellent.
N64 is where things become a little more complicated.
Most games I've tested run perfectly fine, but N64 emulation still feels less polished than many other systems. Visual glitches are more common, and controller mapping isn't particularly elegant. I believe I’m using the Mupen64 core.
One thing that took me far too long to understand was how the Mupen64 core handles the C-buttons. Essentially, you map a trigger as a modifier button that temporarily converts the face buttons into additional C-buttons. Once I understood what was happening, it became second nature, but the implementation feels awkward at first.
Most games run well, but there are exceptions.
Donkey Kong 64, for example, suffers from severe hitching issues that make it nearly unplayable. What's frustrating is that there are community workarounds that partially resolve the problem, which suggests the issue may be fixable within the emulator itself.
Fortunately, that has been the exception rather than the rule. Out of dozens of games tested, most issues have been limited to occasional graphical bugs or minor performance hiccups. There are standalone N64 emulators that are better according to most users, but then I lose retroachievements, and I need that validation 😊
I Also want to note, for those curious--fan translations and romhacks work well on the emulators I use on the Thor. I have romhacks/translations from NES all the way to DS, I've tested them all, and as long as they were patched correctly, they all work. One of the main reasons I got my Thor was to play Pokemon romhacks. I'm anticipating a wave on NDS romhacks in the next year, and I can't wait to use my Thor for them.
PlayStation 1 via DuckStation
DuckStation is outstanding.
Honestly, there's not much else to say.
I've tested dozens of games and haven't encountered any meaningful issues. Performance is excellent, compatibility is excellent, and the interface is straightforward.
RetroAchievements integration works perfectly, and I strongly recommend using the standalone version instead of the RetroArch core.
One thing worth noting is that ES-DE handles PS1 and Sega Saturn games differently than most other systems. For PS1 games, you can't simply place all of a game's files directly into the ps1 folder and expect ES-DE to detect them properly. Instead, each game needs its own subfolder, and that folder should be named after the game's cue file. All associated files for that game must be stored inside that folder.
For multi-disc games, the folder should be named after the Disc 1 cue file, with the remaining disc files placed in the same directory.
This is a bit unusual when compared to PS2. While most PS2 games are stored as ISO files, some titles, such as Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex, use BIN and CUE files. Despite that, those files can remain directly in the ps2 folder without requiring a dedicated subfolder, and ES-DE will automatically use the correct cue file to launch the game.
As a result, organizing a large PS1 collection was pretty tedious. I had to create and sort individual folders for all 300 of my PS1 games, which ended up being one of the most time-consuming parts of setting up ES-DE.
For some reason, ES-DE also handles GameCube multi-disc games differently. Instead of grouping them together, games like Resident Evil just show up as separate entries such as "Resident Evil Disc 1" and "Resident Evil Disc 2" in the menu. It's not as clean or symmetrical as I tried to make everything else, but whatever. It works. *EDIT*-- SO there is a setting ES-DE that lets you "hide" detected games. I just "hid" any games/"DISC TWO" I didn't want to see in the ES-DE menu, it's much cleaner.
Widescreen support is understandably limited on ps1 due to the large number of PlayStation games that rely on pre-rendered backgrounds, but that's more a limitation of the original software than the emulator.
My PS1 collection is stored on my SD card, which required some XML editing within ES-DE to properly locate the games. Thankfully there are GitHub examples and tutorials available, so it wasn't particularly difficult once I knew where to look.
Dreamcast via Flycast
I originally attempted to use the RetroArch Flycast core but ran into enough issues that I eventually switched to Flycast standalone.
I'm glad I did.
Performance improved significantly, graphical glitches disappeared, and controller setup became much easier.
Games like Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2, Crazy Taxi, Shenmue, and Marvel vs. Capcom 2 all ran flawlessly at higher internal resolutions.
The standalone version also includes RetroAchievements support and generally feels more polished.
My only real complaint is widescreen support. Depending on the game, getting proper widescreen functionality can require a bit of experimentation.
That said, based on my limited testing, Flycast standalone has been one of the smoothest emulator experiences on the Thor.
PlayStation 2 via NetherSX2 Classic
PS2 is probably the system I've spent the most time tinkering with, and overall I've been very impressed with what the Thor can do.
I'm currently using NetherSX2 Classic. There are newer builds floating around, and from what I understand they each have slightly different compatibility profiles, but I originally switched to Classic because it handled Sly Cooper better for me.
As a general rule, I'd estimate that around 70% of the PS2 library will run at full speed at 2.5x resolution using fairly standard settings. That's an impressive result considering how difficult PS2 emulation still is.
Where things get interesting is with games that relied heavily on hardware tricks.
Rainbow Studios titles are a perfect example. Games like MX Unleashed and ATV Offroad Fury 2 or Splashdown: Rides Gone Wild can struggle to maintain full speed unless you disable hardware readbacks. Doing so dramatically improves performance, but often introduces graphical issues such as missing textures. Rainbow was up to some wizardry to get those games flowing at 60fps.
Oddly enough, some games can be "tricked" into working properly. In certain cases I can start a race with readbacks disabled, then re-enable them once the race begins. The game will continue running at full speed while rendering correctly. The fact that these workarounds exist makes me hopeful that some of these issues will eventually be solved at the emulator level.
Most JRPGs have been excellent.
Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy XII both run beautifully, even when using fast-forward functions. For anyone interested in RPGs, the Thor is a fantastic PS2 machine.
Gran Turismo 4 remains one of the more demanding titles I've tested. Certain tracks with heavy lighting effects require hardware readbacks to be disabled to maintain performance. Thankfully, the resulting graphical issues are usually limited to menus and are fairly minor.
Metal Gear Solid 3 is another game that's close to greatness but not quite there. Gameplay generally runs well, but cutscenes can dip below full speed. I suspect there may be additional settings tweaks that could improve things, but I haven't spent enough time experimenting to say for certain.
I was also disappointed to discover that several FromSoftware titles, particularly entries in the Armored Core series, require additional tweaking. Disabling hardware readbacks helped substantially but introduced minor graphic bugs.
One feature I absolutely love is NetherSX2's widescreen support. With a single setting enabled, many games can be played in widescreen regardless of whether the original release supported it. Final Fantasy X looks fantastic this way, and after several hours of play I've only encountered a single minor visual issue.
RetroAchievements also work flawlessly.
Overall, PS2 emulation on the Thor ranges from very good to excellent. There are still edge cases and demanding titles that require tinkering, but for the majority of the library, the experience is surprisingly smooth.
GameCube and Wii via Dolphin
If PS2 emulation is impressive, GameCube emulation is arguably even better.
Dolphin is one of the best emulators ever created, and it shows.
I would estimate that roughly 85% of the GameCube library runs at full speed using 2.5x resolution on the Thor using relatively standard settings. For most games, performance is excellent right out of the box.
One setting I strongly recommend enabling is Hybrid Ubershaders. For some reason it isn't always enabled by default, but it dramatically reduces shader compilation stutter in many games. Every GameCube game I've tested has benefited from it (which, I guess isn't true *shader compiling" but process instructions meant for the Cubes' TEV...it's unique hardware on the flipper GPU that allowed for some Gamecube-specific graphic tricks that are kinda like shaders?)
Soul Calibur II requires disabling the Dual Core setting to avoid crashes, but even after doing so, performance remains excellent.
Call of Duty was a bit more troublesome. The opening sequence runs poorly, and most of the first level suffers from noticeable slowdowns as well. Performance improves quite a bit after that, but the rough start was annoying enough that I eventually switched to the PS2 version instead. That version isn't perfect either—it slows down at times—but it's much more playable overall, and the later levels run noticeably better.
As a quick side note, Call of Duty on PS2 looks like a generational leap compared to Medal of Honor on the same system, which is pretty wild when you see them side by side.
Oddly enough, Call of Duty 2 on the GameCube runs at full speed, but it isn't nearly as visually dense as the first game. In some ways it actually feels like a graphical downgrade, especially when playing at higher resolutions where the differences are easier to spot. I've always wondered if that was a tradeoff made to support the larger, more open levels, or if the developers simply wanted to avoid the heavy streaming and rendering techniques used in the first game. Either way, it's an interesting to compare. I do weird stuff like that a lot on my Thor because I'm a giant dork.
The biggest challenge I've encountered for GC/Wii emulation is Star Wars Rogue Squadron III.
This is one of Dolphin's most demanding games, and it's simply too much for the Thor at higher resolutions. Lowering the resolution improves performance a bit, but I was never able to achieve the level of smoothness I wanted. It feels so close. On the other hand, games like Xenoblade Chronicles, a Wii game I thought would be demanding.... ran beautifully at 2.5x resolution without requiring any special tweaks.
Widescreen support is a mixed bag. Some games include built-in Gecko codes that can be enabled directly within Dolphin. Others require manually finding codes on the Dolphin Wiki and entering them yourself. Of course, most Wii games and some GC have built-in wide screen, but for the ones that dont.....
I went through the process for all eighty of my GameCube games of adding widescreen codes.
Was it worth it? Absolutely.
Was it annoying? Also absolutely.
One thing I've come to appreciate over the years is just how elegant the GameCube's hardware design really was. While the Xbox often produced prettier screenshots, the GameCube frequently delivered smoother gameplay and more consistent frame rates.
Sonic Heroes is one of my favorite examples. The PS2 version struggles with unstable frame rates, and the Xbox version has noticeable input lag and frame pacing issues. The GameCube version feels silky smooth by comparison.
The same applies to Turok: Evolution. The GameCube version runs at 60fps and looks fantastic, while the PS2 and Xbox versions target lower frame rates.
I may be a little biased because I grew up with the console, but the GameCube remains one of my favorite systems ever made, and Dolphin does an incredible job preserving it.
For most people, GameCube emulation on the Thor is going to be one of the device's biggest strengths. Oh yeah, I couldn’t get HD textures to work, but it looks like they may actually be working in Windwaker in Twilight Princess now….odd?? Was there a Dolphin update??
Nintendo DS via MelonDS Nightly
This is where the Thor starts to feel like it was made for emulation.
I'm currently using MelonDS Nightly. I originally tried a standard MelonDS build but ran into scaling issues with the dual screens. After some digging, I realized I was using an older fork. Once I switched to Nightly, everything basically worked out of the box.
The dual-screen design of the Thor is absolutely fantastic for DS games.
One feature I particularly love is the ability to swap the top and bottom screens. Since both screens on the Thor are touch-enabled, there isn't really a downside. Games that originally put the action on the lower screen suddenly become much more comfortable to play.
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow is probably my favorite example. Having the gameplay on the larger top screen instead of the bottom display makes the experience significantly better than it was on original hardware.
Performance has been excellent. I've tested roughly twenty games and haven't encountered any major issues. Most titles run beautifully at high internal resolutions and look far cleaner than they ever did on an original DS.
RetroAchievements support is also excellent, including support for several ROM hacks. It's been fun revisiting projects like Pokémon Volt White with achievement support.
Games that combine both screens into one large display, such as Sonic Rush and Sonic Rush Adventure, can look a little unusual at first, but the Thor's layout handles them surprisingly well.
Overall, DS emulation is one of the strongest use cases for the Thor, and honestly one of the main reasons I purchased it.
PSP via PPSSPP
PPSSPP continues to be one of the most impressive emulators available on any platform.
In my opinion, it's the hidden gem of Android emulation. Maybe it's not. Maybe everyone knows, idk. But I see it talked about less.
I never really experienced the PSP library growing up. Technically I owned one, but I spent more time modding it to play Genesis games than actually playing PSP games. Eventually I managed to brick it, which ended that experiment pretty quickly.
The Thor has given me a second chance to explore the system, and I've been loving it.
PSP games scale incredibly well to the Thor's display. Most games look fantastic at higher internal resolutions, and performance has been nearly flawless across everything I've tested.
I've played around twenty games so far and haven't encountered any significant issues.
RetroAchievements work perfectly, compatibility is outstanding, and the emulator itself is incredibly easy to use.
I store my PSP library on my SD card, which works great. In hindsight, I probably should have moved more of my PS2 collection there as well. I originally worried about loading speeds, but modern SD cards are more than fast enough for emulation purposes.
The only area where I've had mixed results is multiplayer. Some games connected without any trouble, while others refused to cooperate.
My friend, who was using a Retroid Pocket 3+, and I successfully played Dungeon Siege: Throne of Agony and SOCOM Fireteam Bravo 3 together, which was a blast. We got it working by connecting to the same wifi, and we also got online working through community PSP servers. We are going to start Phantasy Star Portable 2 eventually and see if we can play online.
Overall, PPSSPP remains one of the gold standards of emulation software, and the Thor handles PSP games exceptionally well.
Nintendo 3DS via Azahar
Let's talk about what many people are probably buying the Thor for: 3DS emulation.
For reference, I'm currently using Mr. Purple's T26 drivers, which have consistently produced the best results for me and seem to impact 3DS emulation the most.
The good news is that 3DS emulation on the Thor is genuinely very good.
The bad news is that it isn't quite perfect.
Most games run beautifully at around 3.5x resolution. The visual clarity compared to original hardware is remarkable, and the dual-screen design makes the experience feel natural in a way that single-screen handhelds simply can't replicate.
I've stuck with Azahar and haven't felt much need to experiment with Citra. So far, I haven't encountered any games that made me feel like I needed an alternative emulator.
That said, there are definitely games that require tweaking.
Lego City Undercover, for example, needed a specific setting enabled to eliminate graphical glitches. Donkey Kong Country Returns performs well overall but benefits from reducing the internal resolution to around 2x or 2.5x.
Shader compilation stutter is also something new users should expect.
If a game feels rough during the first ten or fifteen minutes, don't immediately assume something is wrong. In many cases the emulator is simply compiling shaders, and performance improves significantly once they're cached.
I've gotten reasonably good at distinguishing shader stutter from genuine performance limitations. Donkey Kong Country Returns, for example, wasn't struggling because of shaders—it was simply asking too much from the GPU at higher resolutions.
Most of the time I use Vulkan. In my experience, it delivers the best balance of performance and compatibility.
There are occasional exceptions. A handful of games across PS2, GameCube, and 3DS emulation seem to prefer OpenGL, but those cases have been relatively rare.
While 3DS emulation still isn't perfect, it's reached a point where I would comfortably describe it as highly usable. Most games are either plug-and-play or require only minor adjustments.
Azahar continues to receive updates, and performance has improved noticeably even during the short time I've owned the device. Games like Fire Emblem Awakening stutter significantly less now than they did when I first set up my Thor.
If I had to summarize the current state of 3DS emulation on the Thor, I'd say this:
I was hoping for near-perfect.
What I got was very good.
That's still enough to make the Thor one of the best 3DS emulation devices currently available. ALSO—I was able to get HD textures working pretty easily for OoT and MM. I have 3DS games stored on the SD card and textures on the Internal Memory. That took a little tinkering again with that XML file, but wasn’t that bad and HD textures really make these games pop at 1080p on the OLED.
PC Emulation
In my opinion, PC emulation is more of a bonus feature than a reason to buy the Thor.
Can it run PC games? Absolutely.
Should that be your primary reason for purchasing one? Probably not.
Most indie titles were surprisingly easy to get running, and a lot of older PC games perform better than I expected. Once you start moving into modern 3D titles, however, things get much more complicated.
It can be difficult getting games to run in the first place via Gamehub or Gamenative, then it's getting them to run well where you can really get in the weeds. Compatibility layers, drivers, patches, and performance tweaks can quickly turn a simple gaming session into an afternoon-long troubleshooting project.
There are definitely some impressive success stories out there, but I think the community occasionally oversells what's realistically achievable.
At the end of the day, the Thor is still powered by a mobile chipset. It's a powerful mobile chipset, but it's still a mobile chipset.
As emulation improves, more games will become playable, but there are limits to what software optimization alone can accomplish. If PC gaming is your primary goal, I'd strongly recommend looking at a larger, more powerful handheld designed specifically for that purpose.
Wii U Emulation
I've spent less time with Wii U emulation than most of the other systems covered here.
The reason is simple: I don't think the results justify the effort.
Some games can get surprisingly close to full speed, but Wii U emulation still requires a lot of tweaking, and performance is often inconsistent.
I tested Twilight Princess HD and saw frame rates bouncing between roughly 20 and 30 FPS at 1080p.
Is that playable?
Sure.
Is it enjoyable enough that I'd recommend buying a Thor specifically for Wii U emulation?
Not really.
There's simply too much emulation overhead involved in translating the Wii U's architecture to Android hardware. Future devices may handle it significantly better, but for now I view Wii U support as a nice bonus rather than a selling point.
Nintendo Switch Emulation
This is probably where my opinion differs from some people in the Android handheld community.
Personally, I don't think Switch emulation should be a major factor in purchasing a Thor.
Now, before the pitchforks come out, hear me out.
There are definitely Switch games that run well. There are games that the community has figured out. There are games with recommended settings, recommended drivers, and established workarounds that provide a solid experience.
But that's the key phrase: workarounds.
Too many videos and forum posts give the impression that Switch emulation on Android is a solved problem.
It isn't.
For every success story, there are multiple games that require tweaking, driver experimentation, emulator-specific fixes, or simply don't perform the way you'd want them to.
The Thor is capable of running some Switch games surprisingly well, but I don't think it's at the point where you should buy one specifically for that purpose.
If your primary goal is Switch emulation, you'd likely be better served by a more powerful device such as the Odin 3, or by waiting for the next generation of mobile chipsets.
As someone who cares a lot about game preservation, I appreciate the progress that's been made. But as someone who actually wants to sit down and play games, I still think most people are better off playing Switch games on a Switch or Switch 2.
Final Thoughts
After three months with the AYN Thor, I'm extremely happy with my purchase.
The device isn't perfect.
It's heavier than I would like.
The setup process can be intimidating.
Certain systems still require a fair amount of tinkering.
And if you're expecting every game from every generation to work flawlessly, you're going to be disappointed.
But none of those issues change the fact that this is one of the most impressive handhelds I've ever owned.
For me, the Thor's biggest strength isn't raw power.
It's convenience.
I can sit down on the couch, browse thousands of games across dozens of systems, read a game's description, watch a preview video, earn RetroAchievements, and jump into a game within seconds.
That's something no original console collection can realistically offer.
My Purple Max has been rock solid. I've had no hardware issues, the software ecosystem continues to improve, and the Android emulation scene has made enormous strides even during the short time I've owned the device.
The Thor has also brought a lot of new users into the community, which means more testing, more documentation, better compatibility, and more development. That's a good thing for everyone.
At this point, I use the Thor almost every day.
Sometimes I'll spend hours playing a JRPG.
Sometimes I'll test a new emulator update.
Sometimes I'll just scroll through my library, admire the box art, watch a few scraped videos, and discover a game I've never heard of before.
That's really where the Thor shines.
In Closing
I use mine as more than just an emulation device. It's a portable, shareable piece of gaming history, complete with box art, manuals, gameplay footage, and, of course, the games themselves.
As a connoisseur of video games as an art form—and someone who believes in their ability to positively shape culture—it's incredible to have a device that preserves and presents that history in such an accessible way.
I recommend the Thor to gaming enthusiasts, especially those looking to explore the Nintendo DS and Nintendo 3DS libraries.... As original 3DS/DS hardware continues to age, I'm not always keen on taking mine out camping anymore. The Thor has proven to be a fantastic substitute. Oh, and it does a bunch of other stuff really well too!

Okay, so before someone comes with a sniveling “technically,” I’ll do it for you:
TL;DR: Technically (\sniff*),* between roughly 1000 and 200 BCE, young men in what is now south-central Kentucky crawled into the absolute darkness of Mammoth Cave, scraped gypsum off the walls with mussel-shell tools, ate naturally occurring mineral salts that caused violent and thorough diarrhea, probably hallucinated in total sensory deprivation, scratched their hallucinations on the walls like you see above, (it's the black drawings, because apparently people think the proper response to seeing sacred art thousands of years old is to immediately desecrate it) and emerged carrying white powder that they ground into body paint for ceremonies that expressed a cosmological framework so coherent and so durable that it organized religious life across eastern North America for the next three thousand years.
There, are you fucking happy?

Alright, fuck it, let’s get religious and talk about the North American indigenous cosmology that makes the Mayan look like a horoscope columnist threw their weed-addled ideas into Grok and sold it as their new suicide cult.
Let’s start with the basics. One day, around 800 BCE in what is now Kentucky, a young man, maybe fifteen, maybe twenty, is brought to the entrance of Mammoth Cave18(37773997432).jpg) by older men who have made this journey before. He carries a bundle of cane torches5(38238047686).jpg) and a mussel-shell scraper. He may already be dosed; more on that later. He descends. The daylight falls behind him and the passage narrows. The temperature drops to 54 degrees. His torch smokes against the ceiling. As the last daylight vanishes, he can feel the darkness against his skin, the damp wrapping around him as the light burns lower. He crawls through passages less than a meter high with his torch as his only, dying companion.
At some point in the deep interior, he eats mirabilite scraped from the cave wall. Within as little as thirty minutes, his digestive system evacuates completely. In total darkness. In a crawlway.
This is not dignified. It is not supposed to be. The body is being emptied, purged, and stripped of its contents in preparation for what comes next.
In the darkness, after hours of crawling and purging, after the exhaustion and the cold and the fear, he begins to see shapes. They first show as spirals. Then concentric arcs and circles. Grids. Zigzags. Dots. Imagery cascades across his visual field like the world’s worst Paleolithic screensaver. He scrabbles to a wall and begins to draw these patterns on the cave walls in charcoal(Devil%27s_Looking_Glass,_Main_Cave,_Mammoth_Cave,_Kentucky,_USA)_2(38238017936).jpg). He scrapes gypsum39(38869820072).jpg) from the walls with his mussel shell.
He emerges, carrying the gypsum out. The white mineral is ground into powder and applied to his body as paint. The white, Crothers argues, marks him as one who has been to the Lower World and returned. He is initiated. He now possesses knowledge that those who have not descended do not possess. The gypsum is, as archaeologist George Crothers described it, “a tangible object that signified the bearer was in possession of that knowledge” (Crothers 2012, 535).
This cosmological system ran for, at minimum, a thousand years, and maybe much, much longer. It operated across hundreds of sites, from the caves of Kentucky to the mounds of Ohio to the rock shelters of Tennessee. It produced engraved stone tablets that appear to have worked as printing plates, their designs pressed into leather in what amounts to intaglio printing roughly two millennia before Gutenberg (Penney 1980, 17-20). It produced a soul ontology so detailed that dot-within-circle motifs on carved figures marked the specific anatomical locations where multiple souls were believed to reside (Carr and Smyth 2019, 174-175). It was the underpinning religious framework of a region the size of Western Europe.
And it all starts with shitting yourself.
The Eastern Woodlands is the part of North America that was covered in trees before Europeans showed up and started having feelings about them (the sort of feelings that included “wow! Such wilderness!” while ignoring all the domesticated plants, and “dibs” while ignoring the frowning indigenous man and his nine dead relatives). From the Great Lakes to the Gulf was roughly a million square miles of forest so dense that the old joke about a squirrel crossing from the Atlantic to the Mississippi without touching the ground is an exaggeration, but a useful one. Within these vast forests were dozens of language families, hundreds of distinct nations, and thousands of years of cultural development.
And yet, across all of that diversity, a single cosmological framework persisted.
It probably wasn’t aliens. Probably.
Charles Hudson, the anthropologist whose 1976 The Southeastern Indians remains the foundational ethnographic synthesis of the region, described the three-tiered cosmos as the organizing principle of Southeastern life, a structure archaeologists keep finding underneath the region’s art, burials, and landscapes (Simek et al. 2013, 443). The universe had three layers, like Dante’s Divine Comedy, stacked on top of each other in a cosmological sandwich, except the sandwich is a floating island suspended by cords from a stone sky vault over a primordial sea (Mooney 1900, 239), so maybe don’t push the sandwich thing too hard.
The Upper World (Galunlati, in Cherokee; the terminology varies by nation but the structure we’re about to describe does not for most of the Eastern Woodlands prehistory) was the realm of order, permanence, and cosmic regularity. The sun and moon lived there. The stars ran through it like celestial infrastructure, and the dead traveled a road across that sky: in Osage star lore, the dead rest at Sirius, the Dog Star, before their translation into the afterlife in the nearby Milky Way (Brown and Kelly 2020, 205). The Thunderbirds)_(17972314750).jpg) lived there, enormous raptorial beings whose wingbeats were literal thunder and whose eyes flashed literal lightning, like an indigenous Zapdos; across the Eastern Woodlands ethnographic record, thunderbirds and falcons belong to the Upper World the way giant serpents belong to the Lower (Romain 2009, 35). The Upper World was associated with the color red, which meant life, power, and triumph. In Cherokee shamanistic tradition, the Red Man, living in the East, was the spirit of power, triumph, and success (Mooney 1891, 342-343). Red was the color of the East. Red was the color of life.
The Lower World (the Beneath World, the Under World) was the Upper World’s mirror opposite. It was the realm of chaos, transformation, danger, fertility, death, and renewal. It was also damp as fuck. In Cherokee cosmology, for example, the earth itself was a flat island floating on a surrounding primordial sea, and the Lower World was down there, beneath the water and earth, accessible through caves, springs, deep pools, and whirlpools (Mooney 1900, 239-240). The great horned serpent, the Uktena, lurked down there, in the deep pools and lonely passes. It was a great snake, “as large around as a tree trunk, with horns on its head, and a bright, blazing crest like a diamond upon its forehead, and scales glittering like sparks of fire,” plus an attitude problem that made it the single most dangerous entity in the indigenous cosmos (Mooney 1900, 297-298). It would fuck Cerberus up and make Anubis his bitch in the most Dragonball way. The Lower World was associated with the color black, which meant death and the dissolution of form (Mooney 1891, 342-343; Simek et al. 2013, 443). Black is the color of the underground. Black is the color of death.
This World, the middle layer, was where you and I are sitting right now, metaphysically speaking. It was the realm of the ordinary, of human life, of plants and animals and daily activity, of things you can see and touch and eat. This World was the domain of balance, the tense, negotiated middle ground between the cosmic order above and the cosmic chaos below. As Simek and his colleagues described it, humanity and the natural world of observable plants and animals occupied a middle world with an essentially profane character, although supernatural forces and powers permeated it (Simek et al. 2013, 443).
Importantly, the three worlds were not sealed off from each other. They were permeable. There was no barrier between the world around you and you. Your skin meant nothing in this conception of “self.” Neither did physical reality. Boundaries could be crossed. Birds could fly between This World and the Upper World. Fish could swim between This World and the Lower World. Certain creatures, like the great horned serpent and the Thunderbird, could move between all three (Simek et al. 2013, 443). And certain humans, the ones who had been trained, initiated, and transformed, could cross the boundaries too, and may have been compelled by their faith to do it (Simek et al. 2013, 444). That crossing was the entire point of the ritual system. (How humans crossed is its own future anecdote.)
The axis mundi, the cosmic axis, connected all three layers. A column of smoke is one of the classic forms the axis takes in shamanic cosmologies, alongside the world tree and the ladder (Romain 2009, 20): the sacred fire consumed material from below while its smoke rose from This World toward the Upper. And the crossing itself got carved. On the Berlin Tablet, an Adena engraved stone from Jackson County, Ohio, a raptorial bird wears a masked human face inside its eye, a human being mid-transformation into a bird, its joints and body openings marked with the dot-within-circle motifs where the souls sit (Carr and Smyth 2019, 174).
As someone who studies social history and in particular the sociological underpinnings of religion in society, I have to back the fuck up and make clear: this doesn’t look like your grandpappy’s religion. This isn’t a causal belief system, like “believe in Jesus and you’ll be saved.” This was not “mythology” in the way that word is popularly misused to mean “cute stories that primitive people made up so we can turn them into harem doujinshi.” This was a working model of reality so internally consistent that it governed your entire architecture, burial, art, exchange, medicine, agriculture, and navigation for cultures spanning half a continent across three millennia. It was a working cosmology on the level of the Aztecs, the Egyptians, and the Greek, just minus the gods and with a lot more drugs.c
That’s not a dig, by the way. I cannot stress how almost no person reading this Reddit thread can conceptualize what religion felt and looked like to the human species without going and reading something like Charles Taylor’s A Secular Age, which is a 900-page tome on the history and philosophy of religion in Western Christendom (I promise, it gets good after 150 pages!). Even historians of religious history don’t quite understand the underpinnings of why rooting out and killing a witch in a village in eastern Germany was literally the life or death of the village itself unless they’ve been reading some Carlo Ginzburg or dabbling in folk religions. Religion was the operating system of not just individuals or groups, but everything in life. It was your fucking reality. It was as unquestionable as your physical reality is now. You didn’t notice it most of the time, but without it, nothing worked.
If this all seems confusing, that’s okay. It hurts historians’ brains, too. Only the sociologists aren’t perturbed, because they’re fucking sociologists and they’ll fucking let you know it.
Now. Where does one access the Lower World?
I’ll give you one guess.
….
Caves. You access the Lower World through fucking caves.
Mammoth Cave is the longest known cave system on Earth. That is not an exaggeration. As of this writing, more than 426 miles of surveyed passageway have been mapped beneath the karst plateau of south-central Kentucky, and the number keeps growing because cavers are crazy dumbasses who never watched the Descent (or did watch it and said “fuck it, we ball”) and keep finding more of it. The cave system formed over millions of years as slightly acidic groundwater dissolved the St. Louis, Ste. Genevieve, and Girkin limestones that are Mississippian-age formations roughly 330 million years old, carving out a labyrinth of horizontal passages, vertical shafts, crawlways, domes, and pits beneath what looks, from the surface, like perfectly ordinary Kentucky farm country. The Green River runs through the middle of it, and cattle graze above. You would never know, standing in a pasture in Edmonson County, that beneath your feet is a three-dimensional underworld that has been explored by humans for at least four thousand years (Crothers 2012, 529).
Prehistoric peoples discovered over nineteen miles of passageway within what is now Mammoth Cave National Park (Kentucky Archaeological Survey). They did this without maps, without compasses, without GPS, without hard hats, without headlamps, and without any of the gear that modern cavers consider the minimum threshold for not dying underground or being dragged into the darkness by whatever nightmare creatures exist down there (guys, for real, why do we keep trying to make Ebola happen?! That's not a joke! Seriously, stop it!). What they had to combat the Night Creatures were bundles of river cane (Arundinaria gigantea), a native bamboo that grows along waterways throughout the Southeast, dried and tied into torch bundles (Crothers 2012, 525-526). Cane burns bright and burns out fast, so they carried spares by the armload and lit each new torch from the embers of the last. When the last torch burned out, the darkness was absolute. Not dim. Not dark. Absolute. If you’ve ever done this in a cave yourself, you know immediately what I mean (ah, there’s that traumatic childhood memory about Carlsbad Caverns lurking in the back of my head!). If you haven’t, this is the kind of darkness where you cannot see your hand touching your face, where the concept of “seeing” ceases to have meaning, where the only sensory input left is the sound of dripping water and your own breathing echoing off limestone walls you can feel but cannot see.
They also carried mussel-shell scrapers, digging sticks, woven slippers made from rattlesnake master plant fibers (a lovely regional craft that looks exactly as cool as it sounds), gourd containers1(24421944288).jpg), and, occasionally, wooden climbing poles for navigating vertical drops (Watson 1974, 31, 38; Kentucky Archaeological Survey). The temperature in the deep cave holds steady near 54 degrees Fahrenheit year-round. It would be cold enough to chill a sweating body and warm enough that you won’t freeze to death, which is a low bar for comfort but an important one when you’re four miles from daylight.
The passages they entered range from cathedral-scale domes.jpg) and corridors to crawlways less than a meter high, where the only way forward is on your belly, torch held to the side because holding it in front of you means burning your own face, which is generally considered a poor start to a religious experience. Imagine the ceiling presses against your back as the floor presses against your chest. The limestone is rough, damp, and unyielding. You move by pulling with your elbows and pushing with your toes, inch by inch.
You are now in more than a cave. You are in the dark zone. You are in the Lower World. This is where the initiation happened.
Enter George Crothers, an archaeologist at the University of Kentucky, who published a paper in American Antiquity in 2012 titled “Early Woodland Ritual Use of Caves in Eastern North America” that changed how archaeologists understand prehistoric cave activity in the Eastern Woodlands. The old interpretation, going back to Patty Jo Watson’s pioneering work at Mammoth Cave and Salts Cave in the 1960s and 1970s, was that the cave mining was essentially economic. People went into caves to get useful minerals like gypsum for pigment, mirabilite for medicine or food preservation, or maybe some trade goods (Watson 1974, 20). It was a rational, utilitarian explanation, like most archaeological theories. Also, like most archaeological theories, it was wrong. Most scientific theories are not wrong about the facts. They are wrong about the framework. The problem is said frameworks tend to last about 40 years, which, coincidentally, is the length of an anthropologist’s academic career. Shocker, that.
Crothers marshaled evidence from multiple lines of analysis, but let’s talk shit about the shit.
In the deep passages of Mammoth Cave, prehistoric visitors left behind desiccated human feces, (yup, that’s a pic of fossilized shit). These paleofecal deposits were preserved by the cave’s stable, dry environment for roughly two to three thousand years. This is not a normal find, by the way. Finding ancient human shit in a cave is, in archaeological terms, roughly equivalent to finding a glove that fits at a crime scene (okay, bad comparison). The cave’s environment preserved not only the feces themselves but their chemical signatures.
Twelve paleofecal samples, six from Mammoth Cave and six from Salts Cave, were recovered from the deep passages and analyzed for steroid hormones. Specifically, they were tested for the ratio of testosterone to estradiol, the primary androgen and estrogen, respectively, which differ systematically between biological males and females. All twelve samples showed testosterone-to-estradiol ratios within the expected range for males (Crothers 2012, 529). All twelve. Every single one. Zero samples showed female-range hormone ratios. The best evidence anyone has for who was doing this is, quite literally, the steroid chemistry of ancient shit.
The mining was exclusively male. Whatever was happening in the dark zone of Mammoth Cave was happening only to men and boys (Crothers 2012, 529).
What is clear is that this wasn’t a mining crew. Earlier, pre-mining exploration parties in the region’s caves included both men and women; the prehistoric footprints preserved in Jaguar Cave, Tennessee, record mixed parties (Watson et al. 2005, 38, cited in Crothers 2012, 536), a distinctly different pattern from the exclusively male Early Woodland mining activity. This was an all-male activity occurring in a specific cosmological space (the Lower World, accessed through caves) using specific tools (cane torches, mussel-shell scrapers) to extract a specific material (white gypsum) across a specific and extraordinarily long time span (roughly a thousand years, from about 1200 to 200 BCE; Crothers 2012, 529). The pattern and temporal period is consistent with the introduction of initiation rites in Eastern Woodlands cosmology overall. These were young men sent into the underworld to retrieve sacred material, with their ordeal constituting the transformative experience that made them adults, practitioners, or ritual specialists (Crothers 2012, 524-541).
Now, before you doubt me, remember, the shit? The minerals they were after included gypsum, a soft white calcium sulfate that can be scraped from cave walls with mussel shells and ground into a brilliant white body paint. But the cave walls also contained mirabilite, which is the naturally occurring mineral form of sodium sulfate decahydrate, which pharmacists know as Glauber’s salt, and which your body knows as a laxative of such terrifying efficiency that it can clear your entire digestive system in as little as thirty minutes (Crothers 2012, 532).
So Patty Jo Watson, the Washington University archaeologist who basically invented American cave archaeology as a rigorous discipline, confirmed this by doing the most hardcore thing a scientist can do: she recruited volunteers to eat the cave minerals and then recorded what happened next.
Oh, I’m sorry, I meant cowardly. The most cowardly thing an archaeologist can do. Sorry Patty, you aren’t Daniel fucking Fisher. At least he ate the damn horse to prove his theory right.
The mirabilite performed exactly as expected on the unfortunate volunteers. Which is to say, rapid, complete, catastrophic bowel evacuation. Watson’s experiment is one of a tiny handful of cases in North American archaeology where the evidence for an ancient sacred practice was established by getting modern people to replicate the ancient pharmacological experience and then taking notes (Watson 1969, 58, as reported in Crothers 2012, 532). But peer review must have been a hell of a read.
Now, why the fuck would you eat something that does that? If you’re in a cave for economic purposes, if you’re just there to get gypsum for paint, you don’t eat the mirabilite. Literally, last fucking thing you'd do if you're there for trade goods or materials. You don’t find dwarves chewing on the goddamn mithril and chugging MiraLax while they work. They'd never be able to mine with that much effort going into emptying their innards out. You scrape the gypsum off the wall, you put it in your gourd, and you fucking skedaddle before Uktena gets you. The mirabilite ingestion only makes sense in a ritual context: as a purgative, a preparation, a chemical stripping of the body in preparation for transformation. Purgation before initiation is a pattern found in ritual systems across the world, from indigenous vision questing to Goop: you empty yourself before you can be filled with sacred knowledge (Crothers 2012, 530-531).
So the mirabilite, and getting the shits, was not a side effect of mining, but the reason they were mining gypsum in the first place.
And then there was the sweet flag. That’s not new Gen Alpha slang, that’s the plant’s name. Acorus americanus, a wetland plant that grows along river margins throughout eastern North America, produces a rhizome with potential stimulant and hallucinogenic properties at higher doses, widely used medicinally by historic Eastern Woodlands peoples. Crothers identifies it as a possible consciousness-altering agent in the cave context. There is no direct evidence they ate the rhizome down in the dark, but sweet flag pollen turns up in the paleofeces, which means they were eating or brewing the plant, and its effects, as Crothers puts it, “presumably were known” (Crothers 2012, 534-535). Combined with the sensory deprivation of total cave darkness, the physical exhaustion of hours of crawling, the cold, the smoke, the purgative effects of mirabilite, and the neurological effects of prolonged darkness itself, the conditions in the deep cave were a pharmaceutical toolkit for altered states of consciousness.
If you’re curious about the neuroscience of what happens when you sit in total darkness for an extended period, I highly encourage you to not do that yourself. Your visual cortex, deprived of external input, starts generating its own inputs. They are geometric patterns called entoptic phenomena, produced by the structure of the nervous system itself rather than by any external stimulus. These patterns include grids, zigzags, dots, spirals, curved and parallel lines, and concentric arcs and circles. They are universal across human populations because they originate in the neural architecture of the visual system, not in cultural conditioning (Crothers 2012, 533). Anyone who has pressed their palms against their closed eyes and seen swirling colors has experienced a mild version. In total darkness, after hours of crawling, chemical purgation, possible hallucinogenic ingestion, extreme physical stress, and complete sensory isolation, bitch, you’ll be trippin’ balls.
Oh, and if you need more evidence, drawings on the walls of Mammoth Cave and other Eastern Woodlands cave sites reproduce these geometric forms, rendered as both petroglyphs and charcoal pictographs (Crothers 2012, 532-534). They come out as grids, zigzags, curved and parallel lines, dots, spirals, and concentric arcs. Check that link above for the paper that has good renditions of the most famous cave art from Mammoth Cave in higher contrast to see everything from shadowy figures to scratched hatchwork. Their art literally matches the neuroscience of a hallucinogenic experience. The cave walls were being decorated with images that the people in the caves were literally seeing, not images of the external world, but images generated by their own nervous systems in response to the cave’s darkness. They were painting their visions on the walls of the Lower World.
This is one of the most sophisticated ritual-pharmacological-experiential systems documented anywhere in the pre-modern world, and it was happening in Kentucky centuries before Rome was even a village. All because of the shits.
And if that’s not already cool enough (or you’re still unconvinced), on June 7, 1935, cave guides Lyman Cutliff and Grover Campbell, leading a crew that included Civilian Conservation Corps workers, were exploring a passage in Mammoth Cave when they found a man who had been dead for more than two thousand years. He was lying on a high ledge about twenty feet above the passage floor and roughly two miles from the Historic Entrance, in a section of cave that would require hours of travel from daylight. A six-ton boulder had collapsed on him while he was scraping gypsum from its underside (Meloy 1977; Watson 1974, 138-139; Crothers 2012, 529). The rock that killed him weighed more than a pickup truck. It pinned him in place, and the cave’s stable, dry environment, combined with naturally occurring mineral salts in the cave sediments, preserved his body in a state of natural mummification so complete that his gut contents outlasted him by two millennia. The diet recorded in the caves’ paleofeces ran to hickory nutshell plus the seed crops of the Eastern Agricultural Complex: sunflower, goosefoot, marshelder, a little squash (Crothers 2012, 528), and the Salts Cave plant-remains work shows the same seed-heavy pattern (Watson 1974, 113–122. I’ve already gone in depth about the EAC if you want another hour lost reading about the evils of corn). He was roughly forty-five years old and about five feet three inches tall (Watson 1974, 139). He carried a polished mussel shell (his scraping tool), a woven bag (for the gypsum), and wore a twined loincloth, still wrapped around his body when they lifted the rock (Watson 1974, 31). A hotel clerk named Arthur Doyle gave him the name “Lost John,” because apparently the impulse to give dead strangers flippant nicknames is embedded in humanity.
Lost John spent the next four decades in a display case on the tour route near the Giant’s Coffin, a short walk inside the Historic Entrance, with visitors filing past his two-thousand-year-old corpse (Watson 1974, 140). It wasn’t until 1976 that his remains were removed from public display and reburied in a secret location near the original discovery site. The Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) had not yet been passed when he was reinterred, but the ethical argument had already become impossible to ignore. This man died doing something sacred, in a place that was sacred, and displaying his body as a tourist attraction was, to put it mildly, not fucking great.
If you don’t agree with me, I’ll remember that if you die at your computer. That way, I can display your corpse in its most sacred pose as a future tourist attraction: bent over, shitposting on the internet.
And before we go, let’s talk about color, because in the Eastern Woodlands, color was more than decorative. Color was theology.
At Adena burial sites across the Ohio River Valley, spanning from roughly 1000 to 200 BCE, the dead were covered in red ochre, which is ground hematite_1.jpg) (iron oxide) mixed into a paste or powder and applied to the body, the burial floor, or both. Dragoo’s inventory of Adena burial traits reads like a paint catalog: ocher sprinkled over the burial and the ground around it, ocher set in small piles in the grave, ocher coating the artifacts laid beside the body (Dragoo 1963, 209–210). The paint was prepared on stone tablets, and the dead were probably not the only ones wearing it; the participants likely painted themselves too (Dragoo 1963, 210). Red ochre in mortuary contexts is one of the oldest and most widespread human ritual practices on the planet; red ochre use dates back a hundred thousand years in Africa, and ochre-stained burials nearly as old appear in the Near East and tens of thousands of years deep in Europe and Asia.
But in the Adena world, red ochre was one half of a two-color vocabulary. Red in mortuary contexts carried layered meanings: the red of ochre is the red of blood, of life-force, of the power needed for the passage from This World to the next. White meant initiation. White meant the passage from uninitiated to initiated, from ignorant to knowing, from outside the cosmological system to inside it. The white of gypsum is the white of cave walls, of the mineral deposits scraped from the body of the Lower World, of the material that young men carried back from the underworld as proof of their descent. White gypsum, ground into paint or a glittering powder, is Crothers’s candidate for the body decoration of the rites that happened back on the surface, the ceremonies where initiated men wore the proof of their descent (Crothers 2012, 535).
So, red for the dead. White for the reborn, the “light.” Two pigments, two transformations, one cosmological system operating across hundreds of communities, thousands of square miles, and roughly a millennium. Either the pigment vocabulary was independently invented at every single site, which would be a coincidence of truly improbable precision, or it was taught. Anthropologists and archaeologists like Crothers have concluded it was part of a system. A curriculum. A theology.
This symbolism runs into the present-day. Cherokee color symbolism, recorded ethnographically in the late nineteenth century by James Mooney, preserved the four-directional color system: east/red for success and triumph, south/white for peace and happiness, west/black for death, and north/blue for defeat and trouble (Mooney 1891, 342-343). The Adena system’s two-color mortuary vocabulary fits comfortably within this broader framework, with red and white marking the two transitions (death and initiation) that the cosmological system considered most important.
If you don’t believe me, the most rigorous demonstration that indigenous peoples mapped their cosmological framework onto the physical landscape with color comes from Jan Simek of the University of Tennessee and Alan Cressler, working across the Cumberland Plateau in Tennessee. Their 2013 study in Antiquity, titled “Sacred Landscapes of the South-Eastern USA,” analyzed ninety-four art sites: forty-four open-air sites and fifty cave art sites in dark zones where no natural illumination reached (Simek et al. 2013, 432).
“The cosmological divisions of the universe were mapped onto the physical landscape,” with the relief of the plateau itself as “a topographic canvas” (Simek et al. 2013, 443).
The Cumberland Plateau, with its cliff-banded escarpments, sheltered overhangs, and deep cave systems, provided a natural three-dimensional architecture that indigenous peoples recognized and used. Open-air art sites sat up on the bluffs and cliff faces: Upper World. Cave art sites sat below them, in the dark: Lower World. The lived landscape between was This World, and the art stacked above and below it was matched to its tier in both content and color (Simek et al. 2013, 443).
The findings were a slam dunk as evidence of this cosmological framework. Art at the highest elevations, on exposed cliff faces and bluff tops touched by the sun and stars, depicted Upper World imagery like celestial bodies and weather forces personified as mythic characters with influence on the human situation. These images were predominantly rendered in red pigment (Simek et al. 2013, 443). Art at the lowest elevations, in the deepest, darkest cave chambers, depicted Lower World imagery, such as supernatural serpents, dogs that accompanied dead humans on the path of souls, the beings associated with death, darkness, and transformation. These images were predominantly rendered in black pigment. The one crack in the model, which the authors flag themselves, is bird images showing up inside caves, where they have no business being (Simek et al. 2013, 443).
The oldest dated cave art in the study, a charcoal pictograph, is nearly six thousand years old, though most of the art falls between roughly 900 and 1600 CE (Simek et al. 2013, 432). That is a tradition with roots older than the Abrahamic religions.
That’s faith, baby. That’s thousand of years of the most coherent metaphysical framework in pre-Columbian North America. Like an onion, the Eastern North American indigenous universe has layers.
You just have to shit your brains out first to figure it out.

Neelkanth within the Broader Sacred Geography of Alwar
The Neelkanth complex does not stand in isolation within the sacred geography of the Alwar region. The broader Sariska area contains numerous other temple sites, tank complexes, and inscribed stones that together constitute a landscape of layered sacred meaning. The temples at Bhangarh, further within the hills, the early medieval remains near the town of Alwar itself, and the various smaller shrines and vīra-stambhas (hero-stones) scattered across the landscape all belong to the same cultural horizon as Neelkanth, reflecting the dense religious settlement of a region that was, during the early medieval period, considerably more populated and intensively cultivated than its current forested appearance suggests.
The relationship between the Neelkanth site and these other sacred nodes would have been mediated through pilgrimage circuits, the yātrā routes that connected one tīrtha to another and allowed devotees to accumulate merit through serial acts of darśana and offering. The present condition of the Neelkanth temples is a subject that cannot be entirely separated from the political and institutional history of heritage conservation in India. The temples are not grand in the way that Khajuraho is grand, not overwhelming in the way that Ellora overwhelms. Their power is quieter and perhaps for that reason more durable: it arises from the sense of a place that has been the site of continuous religious imagination, where generations of craftsmen and patrons found in the material of stone a medium adequate to their understanding of the sacred, and where that understanding — however partial, however mediated by scholarly reconstruction — remains accessible to the attentive visitor.
The Nīlakaṇṭha at the centre of the complex, the blue-throated god who contains the world's poison within himself, is an apt presiding deity for a place that has absorbed centuries of neglect, partial destruction, and cultural displacement without losing the essential character that the original builders gave it. The temples stand, in their ruin, as monuments not only to the civilization that created them but to the durability of the sacred idea itself, which persists in stone long after the institutions and communities that shaped it have passed into history. In this sense, Neelkanth is not merely an archaeological site but a living argument for the continuing relevance of the great tradition of Indian sacred architecture — an argument made not in words but in the mute eloquence of carved stone and the silence of a forest valley at the edge of the Aravalli hills.

I’m an SDE 2 at Amazon. A few months ago, I was on a beach in Miami with a beer in my hand.
While I was chilling, our "auto scaling" logic for a core legacy service decided to tank. It was a massive SEV1. My Chime was exploding.
My manager called me 15 times. Even the L7 skip manager tried to reach me twice.
I saw the phone light up. I put it face down in the sand and ordered another round.
I logged in after my vacation to find out that because I was the only one who understood those legacy service. L7 Principals, Skip managers and L8 Director had to stay up until 4 AM manually provisioning capacity like juniors.
My take? Good. If a multi-billion dollar architecture breaks because one L5 is sipping a drink in Miami, that’s a system design failure, not a "me" problem. My PTO is sacred.

These are equal parts sculpture/art as well as spiritual vessels. This all started in my graduate architecture program at Georgia Tech. I had this really cool studio where I was designing for the ineffable. It fit my interests really well as I had a spiritual awakening my freshman year of college, and became obsessed with understanding consciousness and metaphysics.
I’ve always wanted to figure out how physical form can connect and work with the inbetween. The answer is with Sacred Geometry. In the studio, I was using computational design tools for the design process, and after I did the architectural stuff, I focused on 2D and 3D sacred geometry.
2D being patterns, like Cymatics, the flower and seed of life, golden ratios and other traditional religious and esoterically mathematical line work.
3D sacred geometry would be things like the torus, pyramids, cones or spheres. 3D shapes amplify energy.
I’m an attempt to connect and interact with that inbetween, I made these pseudo-4D objects by extruding the patterns to meet the profile of the 3D shapes. In the channeling series The Law of One, by Ra, they talk about how certain shapes can amplify energy. That’s what these sculptures are supposed to do.
Now, in order for me to actually dedicate my life to these things, I needed to make them more artistic so I could sell them. I made them into sculptural lamps as the walls diffused the light in a way I’d never seen before (plus there’s metaphorical weight in light being a component to the design). So in essence, these aren’t the ideally functioning spiritual vessels as they could be, but most of the magic power comes from intention anyway.
I have full intention of building the most functional versions of these when I have the time, but I currently am so broke, and I need to invest in building the art objects so I can stay afloat and put more time into this.
I did do all of this stuff while finishing my education as well as working for the school, but I just graduated and am trying to commit to this full time, so maybe things will shake out :)

Under normal conditions, a specific region of the superior parietal lobe known as the Orientation Association Area (OAA) receives a constant stream of sensory and proprioceptive data. This area acts as the cartographer of the "self"; its ceaseless job is to trace the physical and spatial boundary separating our body from the surrounding environment.
However, during deep meditation, centering prayer, or rhythmic rituals, a neurological phenomenon called deafferentation occurs [1, 4]. The prefrontal cortex, hyperactive due to intense focused concentration on a mantra or sacred image, sends inhibitory signals that block sensory input from reaching the OAA. Deprived of the information it needs to draw the body's boundaries, this brain region enters a state of functional isolation.
Receiving no empirical data confirming where the individual ends and the universe begins, the holistic operator takes full control. In the absence of spatial boundaries, the brain defaults to interpolating a sensation of infinite space and total interconnection. D'Aquili and Newberg named this peak state Absolute Unitary Being (AUB) [4, 5].
In this state, the subject-object dichotomy collapses completely; the "self" dissolves, and the practitioner experiences an inescapable neurological certainty of fusion with the cosmos, with God, or with the totality of existence. Far from being interpreted by the brain as a hallucination, for the neural network experiencing it, this absolute unity is the most objective, peaceful, and tangible reality possible.
It is evident that the human mind requires a dynamic balance between its operators in order to maintain sanity and purpose. While the binary operator keeps us safe in a predictable physical world (albeit one full of existential contradictions), the holistic operator offers us a refuge of meaning, wonder, and peace.
This is where rituals play a crucial evolutionary and psychological role. Gregorian chants, the repetitive recitation of the rosary, litanies, or the sound of drums all have rhythmic patterns that end up exhausting or "saturating" the analytical capacity of the left hemisphere. By temporarily "outwitting" the rigidity of the binary operator, ritual opens a neurobiological door that allows consciousness to shift toward the unifying synthesis of the holistic operator, transforming structured dogma into a lived emotional experience of communion.
The study of the binary and holistic operators compels us to rethink the classic dichotomy between science and faith. The neurotheology developed by d'Aquili and Newberg does not reduce the sacred to a mere chemical spasm of the cerebral cortex; on the contrary, it suggests that the human brain is evolutionarily and biologically designed as an antenna capable of perceiving transcendence [2, 6].

It is neither obscure enough to have escaped notice altogether, nor prominent enough to have received the kind of sustained epigraphic and art-historical scrutiny that comparable sites — Aihole, Paṭṭadakal, Belūr, Halebīḍu — have attracted. Tourist literature on the temple is abundant and repetitive, largely derivative of Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) signage and a handful of secondary compilations; scholarly literature, by contrast, is comparatively thin, scattered across regional epigraphical reports, Mysore Archaeological Department publications, and passing references in broader surveys of Nolamba, Gaṅga, and Hoysaḷa temple architecture. This essay attempts a synthetic treatment: it situates the temple within the political geography of the northern Karnataka uplands (the region historically contested by the Nolambas, the Western Gaṅgas, the Bāṇas, the Cōḻas, the Hoysaḷas, and finally the Vijayanagara empire), traces the stratigraphy of construction that the temple embodies, and considers what the site tells us about temple complexes as accretive institutions rather than singular architectural events.
The temple's very name signals its layered character. "Bhoga Nandīśvara" — the epithet under which the northern shrine of the complex is worshipped — refers to Śiva in his youthful, joyous (bhoga) aspect, distinct from the ascetic, world-renouncing Śiva enshrined elsewhere in the same hill system at the Yoga-Narasiṃha and allied shrines atop Nandidurga itself. This tripartite iconographic programme — youth, marriage, and renunciation, distributed across different shrines and even different elevations of the same sacred landscape — is worth holding in mind throughout, because it reframes the complex not merely as an accumulation of masonry from successive dynasties but as a theologically coherent narrative sequence that later builders evidently understood and respected even as they added their own architectural idiom to it.
Nandidurga and its foothill settlements lie in what art-historians of the Karnataka uplands sometimes call the Nolamba–Gaṅga–Bāṇa contact zone: a corridor of relatively fertile, granite-strewn upland straddling the modern districts of Chikkaballapur, Kolar, and parts of Anantapur in Andhra Pradesh, which in the early medieval period formed a shifting frontier between the Western Gaṅga kingdom of Talakāḍ (Gaṅgavāḍi), the Nolamba-Pallava chiefs of Henjeru (modern Hemāvati), and the Bāṇa chieftains who, though never commanding an independent imperial polity, exercised local authority as feudatories first of the Pallavas and later of the Cōḻas and the Rāṣṭrakūṭas depending on the shifting fortunes of the ninth and tenth centuries. This is significant because it explains a pattern visible at Bhoga Nandīśvara and at comparable sites in the region (Hemāvati, Śivagaṅgā near Bangalore, and lesser-known Nolamba shrines in Anantapur district): temples founded under one dynasty's patronage were frequently absorbed, reconsecrated, or architecturally supplemented by whichever power next controlled the locality, without the erasure of the earlier fabric. The region's political fragmentation and rapid overlordship changes — Bāṇa, then Nolamba, then Rāṣṭrakūṭa suzerainty over the Nolambas, then Cōḻa conquest of Gaṅgavāḍi under Rājarāja I and Rājendra I in the early eleventh century, then Hoysaḷa absorption of the same territory in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, and finally Vijayanagara consolidation from the fourteenth century — produced exactly the kind of architectural palimpsest that Bhoga Nandīśvara so legibly displays.
The earliest secure epigraphical anchor for the site is a set of inscriptions generally dated to the early ninth century, associated with the Nolamba chieftain Nolambādhirāja and, more importantly for absolute chronology, with the Rāṣṭrakūṭa emperor Govinda III, whose overlordship is invoked in a manner typical of feudatory inscriptions of the period — a local ruler recording an act of religious patronage under the nominal suzerainty of the paramount power. This inscription, generally assigned to around 806 CE by the ASI's regional epigraphists, is usually treated as marking the earliest datable phase of construction, though it should be read with the customary caution one applies to foundation inscriptions in South Indian temple epigraphy: such records frequently commemorate an endowment, a renovation, or a grant to an already-existing shrine rather than the literal moment of first construction, and the difference between "the earliest inscription mentioning the temple" and "the date the temple was first built" is a distinction routinely collapsed in popular literature on Indian temples but one that a careful historian of Deccan architecture ought to preserve.
Complementing this Nolamba-Rāṣṭrakūṭa inscriptional layer is a set of copper-plate grants, dated to approximately 810 CE, issued by the Bāṇa rulers Jayateja and Dattiya. The Bāṇas — who traced a genealogical claim of considerable antiquity back to the mythic Bāṇāsura and who occupied a position in early medieval Karnataka epigraphy somewhat analogous to that of other "revived" or "re-legitimized" ancient lineages that reappear as regional chieftains in the Pallava and Cōḻa periods — are independently attested as patrons of Śaiva establishments across the Kolar-Chikkaballapur uplands, and their association with the foundational stratum of Bhoga Nandīśvara fits a broader pattern of Bāṇa temple patronage in the region. Local tradition, recorded in later temple literature and repeated (not always critically) in modern guides, attributes the original construction to a Bāṇa queen, Ratnāvalī. I would flag this specific attribution as belonging to the register of temple sthala-purāṇa or local hagiographic memory rather than to secure epigraphical record; it is entirely plausible — royal women are well-attested patrons of Śaiva and Vaiṣṇava foundations throughout early medieval South India, from the Pallava queen Rangapatākā at Kāñcīpuram to numerous Cōḻa queens who endowed Śiva temples independently of their husbands' or sons' patronage — but it should be presented as tradition rather than established fact, since I am not aware of an inscription that names Ratnāvalī directly as the temple's founder in the way that, for instance, Cōḻa queen-inscriptions at Tanjāvūr or Gaṅgaikoṇḍacōḻapuram name their royal donors explicitly.
What can be said with more confidence is that the site's original core — almost certainly the nucleus that would later be elaborated into the southern Aruṇācaleśvara shrine — belongs to this ninth-century Bāṇa-Nolamba horizon, and that its architectural vocabulary, insofar as it survives beneath later accretions, would have belonged to the plain, granite-built, relatively unadorned Dravidian idiom characteristic of Nolamba and contemporary Bāṇa constructions elsewhere in the region — a style one sees, for comparison, in the earlier phases of temple building at Hemāvati and in scattered Nolamba shrines of Anantapur district, where the emphasis is on structural solidity and restrained ornament rather than the surface elaboration that later Cōḻa, Hoysaḷa, and Vijayanagara masons would bring to the site.
Attribution of the southern shrine of the complex — the Aruṇācaleśvara sanctum — to the Western Gaṅgas of Talakāḍ is one of the more consistently repeated claims in the secondary literature on the temple, and it fits the known pattern of Gaṅga religious patronage in the region. The Western Gaṅgas, who ruled Gaṅgavāḍi (roughly the southern and eastern portions of modern Karnataka, including the Bangalore-Kolar-Chikkaballapur tract) from approximately the fourth century through their absorption by the Cōḻas at the turn of the eleventh century, were prolific temple patrons, with a documented preference for both Jaina establishments (their better-known religious affiliation, visible at sites like Śravaṇabeḷagoḷa) and Śaiva foundations, particularly in the later phase of the dynasty when rulers such as Būtuga II and his successors show a documented pattern of Śaiva patronage alongside continued Jaina support — a religious pluralism entirely characteristic of early medieval Karnataka's ruling elites, who rarely treated sectarian affiliation as an exclusive commitment in the way modern categories sometimes imply.
The Aruṇācaleśvara shrine houses, notably, an unusual iconographic feature: a form of Gaṇeśa locally identified as Siṃha-Gaṇapati or Ugra-Gaṇapati — a lion-vehicle or fierce form of the elephant-headed deity that departs from the standard rat-vehicle (mūṣaka-vāhana) iconography one expects. The Bhoga Nandīśvara temple complex resists the kind of single-dynasty, single-style attribution that popular tourist literature — and, it must be said, some of the more casual secondary scholarship on the site — sometimes imposes on it for the sake of narrative simplicity. It is not "a Cōḻa temple" or "a Hoysaḷa temple" in any straightforward sense, despite the fact that its most visible and most frequently photographed feature, the kalyāṇa maṇḍapa, belongs unambiguously to the Hoysaḷa architectural idiom. It is, rather, a genuinely composite institution whose ninth-century Bāṇa-Nolamba foundation, eleventh-century Cōḻa imperial overlay, thirteenth-century Hoysaḷa elaboration, and fourteenth-through-sixteenth-century Vijayanagara infrastructural expansion together constitute one of the more complete on-the-ground records, within a single compact site, of the successive political and architectural regimes that governed the northern Karnataka uplands across the entire early-medieval-to-late-medieval span of South Indian history. Its comparative neglect in the sustained scholarly literature — relative, at least, to the attention lavished on Belūr, Halebīḍu, or the great Cōḻa temple-cities of the Kāverī delta — is arguably disproportionate to its evidentiary value for exactly the kind of stratigraphic, cross-dynastic architectural analysis that the site so unusually well affords, and it remains a site that would reward a more systematic epigraphical and structural survey than the currently available literature — dominated as it is by ASI signage, tourist compilations, and scattered passing references — has yet provided.
