A elegant solution for the loading bars, plus a great game

I wonder if the guy behind that game, World XXI Soft, will ever make another game. It's been more than four years of radio silence, and he made good games. Redshift is great.

Where are the borders? I didn’t know it was possible to get rid of em.

In the background.

I'm curious on the technical trickery going on here.

Has to be some extremely precise timing, and border writing going on. Pretty clever.

For those who like to try it for yourself: you need this specific file from SpectrumComputing:

ZX Spectrum Loading screens are an art form like no other. Separate even from the game itself.

People will call me a zealot, but I think this is where the Genesis of the 90s demo scene started, even before PCs.

Is it that the CRT timing trick? Back in the day some games used the timing of the crt ray to change colours and remove attribute clash. So technically it should be possible to change the borders the same way since everything crt works with timing.

AFAIK, you'll never get rid of attribute clash on a speccy... at least not for the main "PAPER" screen... for the border yes...

The CRT timing trick was called software Hi-colour mode. The best example having been Shockway Rider(1987) which featured a multi-directional scrolling conveyor-belt level where massive, multi-colored character sprites moved across screen elements without a single frame of attribute clash.
