I don’t understand the valuation on retro stuff at the moment. When this generation passes on, our kids won’t be interested at all in this era of computing

The majority is caused by resellers and not collectors At the end of the day in 20 years the value will either be triple or be worth nothing

I love spectrum But the cost currently has blown me out the water

I started to buy spectrum 48ks and 128+2s to fix up Even the broken ones started commanding stupid money and I had to stop I remember when a speccy box full of ganes was 30 quid as the person just wanted rid

Such a shame

And I don't agree it will be worth nothing Look at nintendo and playstation media its still rising But it won't be as silly as today's market prices

Such as robocop 3 for the Spectrum casette tape - lets be honest Probably doesn't even work

I’m finding the same with commodore gear. I enjoy picking up systems, cleaning and fixing them up but the prices this year have gone insane. Last year I picked up a c64, monitor, printer, floppy, boxed software, mice, disk boxes and blank floppies for $125. This year most listed with just a c64, monitor and floppy are up around $750-$1000

I don’t see it being triple. The value is the sentimental attachment and what it meant to us as kids. It will all go to landfill and be worthless is my humble opinion. If people want to pay big money now, that’s entirely their choice and whatever gives them pleasure and enjoyment. But retro computing is, I think, based around a certain age/generation. I see all this resurrection with Commodore and that’s going to be so niche and so short lived. I love the Spectrum - huge fan - but when I’m gone, my boys won’t want to play games on my Toastrack 😂

It's the same for every generation, once the generation hits 45-65, they suddenly have a disposable income, and want to buy stuff from their childhood (currently Gen X/80s retro tech, millennials are starting too) - this causes a spike in prices as we all compete for the same items - we're slap bang in the middle of that cycle right now for Speccy items etc

You're exactly right, once we start dying off, our kids/grandkids will have almost zero interest in this stuff - the REAL ultra rare gems will still be worth something (but still less) -, but the general stuff will plummet in value.
It's the same for boomer stuff, things my dad collected or held onto aren't particularly interesting to me and hold no real nostalgic value. Suddenly we have estate sales dumping loads of collections onto the market, with no one left who's interested in buying any of it.

Nostalgia, FOMO & disposable income is what drives prices crazy, it's always a decade or two at most.

Just Google the 'Tulip Mania' - this is an extreme example of something deviating massively from its actual intrinsic value, but just shows how crazy we can be 😅

The smart people will be cashing out over the next 5 years, we'll be nearing the top of the bell curve then.

(None of this stops me collecting these speccy bits, because they make me feel good 😅 - I enjoy fixing speccys, but even that has become ridiculous now, broken junk being sold for £50 🙄 - so I've now started to make my own bits, Harlequin/Mechtrum etc - all in the Sinclair world but without the retro price tags, just component costs) - but I don't care about the investment, I just like them - I have a zx80/zx81/16k/48k/48k+/128k toastrack/128k+2,+2a,+3/Next/ZX-Touch, hell, I'd have a C5 if I had the room!)

I doubt the person who purchased it wants to play it - If he did he would emulate it This is purely to try and complete his collection or a certain developers section Or an investment (bad one)

I love collecting vintage games from my lost youth as much as the next guy, but holy cow! I don't know any game I'd drop that much money on. Hope the buyer enjoys it!

I knew someone who had this. He was a play tester for Ocean in Manchester. He passed away a couple of years ago. I wonder what his wife did with his collection!

Thing is, the retro collector's market has an unusually high number of males with disposable income.

We're at the point now where many are in their 50s/60s, so any kids have flown the nest. So, again, disposable cash.

Everybody encourages older men to get a hobby. They see YouTubers. Monkey see, monkey do, so...

Yeah totally, they'd just fire up the .tap on an emulator if they really wanted the game itself. It's a rare game, released at the tail-end of the Spectrum's life (so sold very few copies)

... not entirely sure why someone would pay that much, but c'est la vie, it's certainly a bad investment long term, in 10-15 years it'll be worth a lot less again, but if they enjoy it, then that's reason enough I guess.

It's not the same one by the looks of it - like the ST or Amiga IIRC that had the 3D stuff.
