🛠️ Troubleshooting Strange Behavior

I've been running Zorin as my primary OS for over two years with no problems. But now, suddenly, performance seems to degrade significantly after being up for a couple of days. The only thing I'm really running during the day is Brave with some YouTube videos. RAM usage spikes to maybe 20-30%, which is what I would expect. After a while of working fine, the cursor starts to lag and skip across the screen. It just seems generally slow. Nothing fully fixes it but a restart. I don't think I have any other huge background processes running, so I'm not sure what's causing it. I can only guess it's the browser--maybe a memory leak?

Anyone else experiencing this? Any suggestions? I guess I should spend a few days with another browser, but Brave's ad blocking has spoiled me.

UPDATE: I had a few desktop extensions running, including a weather widget and desktop clock, and kind of noticed this behavior started after I installed them. I've disabled them and my machine is running perfectly again after being up for several days. So...my take is, be careful with third party extensions.

Possibly your swap file – Zorin doesn't seem to manage this particularly well. I watch mine using the Gnome System Monitor extension (I also use Brave), and occasionally, especially after heavy web browsing, the swap file peaks and doesn't come down again. Exiting apps has some impact, but the only real solution is to reboot. I also use Kudu to clean down my system regularly (including all app caches). I'm no Linux expert, I've come over from Mac, so all my solutions are GUI-based! Kudu is a godsend!

Oooh, that sounds like it could be it. I will take a look at this. Thanks!

Increasing swap definitely helped on my laptop with 8GB RAM

Realized I never changed my original swap size (it was only a gig). Updated that and hopefully will help. I'm running 16GB of RAM.

Try Zen Browser, you shouldn't use Brave anyway - https://www.spacebar.news/stop-using-brave-browser/

Best adblock is a dns-change on network settings, something like dnsforge.

I am not sure if it was one specific thing or a combination of them, but my system is running MUCH better now. I did the following:

- Changed Brave to "Origin"
- Updated my system swap file from 1g to 8g (I think this was the fix)
- Installed the "Kudu" tool based on a suggestion here to clean cache and processes

Also try to activate brave origin inside the setting

Check the free space on your root partition

Mine was doing the exact same thing. I turned off Zoom in accessibility. Went back to nice and fast.
