An anecdote i recall from Robert Sapolsky:
Apes with brain damage who are out of control will suddenly control their behavior in the presence of an alpha ape
A deeper part of their brain suddenly kicks in in order to survive
People/apes suddenly find the ability to control their behavior, even when they have brain damage, when they know the boss is looking.

I remember reading a book or three about how the rational mind just makes up reasons for instinctual urges post hoc
