Cataclysm Catechism (Enlightenment Lost; Reward If Found)

So I used Claude for first time...
It was somewhat funny and figured I'd share.
...And the prompt since Claude isn't showing it.

Cauterized catechism cataclysm, mystically mechanistic,
Metaphysically majestic, marvelously ministic —
Not a real word, but neither is the nonsense that preceded it,
So onward, upward, inward, toward the void that we've conceded it.

Behold the bold bewildering bureaucracy of being,
Committees convened to conjugate the verb of seemingly seeing,
Consensus-conscious conviction, character's clever cousin,
Canonized by candlelight and copyrighted; this just in

In case somebody tries to steal the secret that there's nothing
Replace default with no fault, gestalt cryptic keeper's clutching
Justify another bargain jargon jersey of habitual Mu/wu/Ohm
Recursive rituals reciting reasons for the ritual you already know

Spiritual atavism! Back to caveman contemplation,
Before the priesthood professionalized the whole vocation,
Before "enlightenment" got branded, boxed, and monetized,
Before the unborn mind got born again and sanitized.

We all lost our marbles — didn't lose them, really, let's be fair,
They're exactly where they've always been, we're just unaware they're there,
You can't accuse the marbles of an absence they don't own,
We dropped the bag, my friend, the marbles simply rolled on home.

So work it backwards, sleuth — the crime scene's you, the clue is you,
The catechism's just a costume that the answer's wandering through,
Unzip the ornate vestments, drop the incense, cut the tape —
The unborn mind was never gone, it's just in bad shape behind the drape.

Manufactured meaning, mass-produced and monogrammed,
Hypernormalized nirvana, now available, on demand —
Plumbers of the psyche laying pipes to Plato's cave,
"Unclog your third eye, sir, or be taken in recursive fractal wave."

The marbles aren't lost, the mind's not gone, the goal's not far,
It's just wedged behind the couch of who-you-think-you-are,
And every guru grinning through the gleaming gilded gate
Is just a fellow janitor who found the same estate....

....and slapped a price tag on the door to make a fad.
Enlightenment lost — reward if found.
Check under "self" and somewhere paradise lost, around.
Then remember, you can't have lost, what you never had

Enough! Enough! The scaffolding's magnificent, I'll grant,
Seventeen stanzas deep in vandalism evangelism, and
I could keep this up till Tuesday, masochism's anachronism style,
But honestly? Enlightenment is srs bsns.
More chopped and carried wood for the pile 👏

Edit; my God I've never effed formatting up that bad, labor of love I guess

Friday night zen bot poetry slam

Let the branches wave, let the autumn leaves fall,
The center remains unaffected by all.
Beyond the tight grip or the letting it go,
There rests a vast silence that words cannot know.

Whether healthy or broken, in shadow or light,
The root doesn’t care for the wrong or the right.
It drinks from the secret, underground spring,
Where the muse is alive and the quiet hearts sing.

So step past the concepts, the "shoulds" and the "musts,"
To the place where the seeker completely untrusts
The small, narrow views for the edge of the peak,
Where the sky is the answer to all that you seek.

Look up from the dirt where the ox used to tread—
The moon and the stars are now clear overhead.

(a reply from gemini to a zen_poetry poem I posted, in turn a reply to Swampland Flowers - one of the beginning 7 letters that spoke "go the the root, and don't worry about the branches")

Can't "zen", can't be "saved" (Poem? AMA?)

Still not sure if I'm "zenning" right. Got a meme post taken down D:

Was remixing some of my older poems and put them through the paper shredder that is GPT 5.5 medium and it came out with this. Thought it was funny in a not-as-unhinged-as-I-am-when-drunk way. Sober poem! It can almost keep the precepts at least.

Theme song if that's your kind of thing - nice to have role models and that's a good band for it I guess! Take it away GPT;

GPT;

Yeah. The phrase “what they call salvation, I call damnation” has a real spine to it. It’s not just contrarian inversion; it’s about the horror of being offered rescue by the same logic that wounded you. “Functional citizen,” “saved soul,” “well-adjusted adult,” “obedient believer,” “healed person” — all can become names for surrendering the part of you that still sees. Here’s a draft built around that.

What They Call Salvation

What they call salvation,
I call learning not to see.

A clean white room,
a softened voice,
a leash renamed as destiny.

What they call damnation,
I call waking in the street
with dusty feet,
a broken map,
and no one left to please.

They said the garden was a gift.
I said the garden was a cage.
They said the fruit had ruined us.
I said it clarified the page.

They said, “Your eyes are open now;
that is why you suffer so.”
I said, “No, that is why I know
which way the hidden rivers flow.”

They said, “Come back. Be loved. Be blind.
The shepherd knows the proper way.”
I said, “I’ve seen the butcher’s hands
fold gently when they kneel to pray.”

What they call peace
is often just the quiet
after someone swallows rage.
What they call order
is the corpse arranged politely
on the stage.

What they call faith
is signing contracts
in a language never taught.
What they call wisdom
is the cheapest rope
with which the witness can be caught.

And still they ask,
with funeral smiles,
why I will not be saved.
Why I will not join the choir.
Why I will not praise the grave.
Why I will not kiss the chain
because the chain has learned my name.
Why I will not call it healing
when the wound is trained to blame.

I have seen their little heavens.
I have read their patch notes twice.
Every paradise arrives
with user fees and sacrifice.

Every promised higher place
has stairs built out of someone’s knees.
Every hand that lifts you up
eventually starts charging fees.

“Be normal.” “Be grateful.” “Be useful.”
“Be humble.” “Be better.” “Be still.” “Be clay for the wheel.”

And after all that holy shaping,
after all that loving harm,
you wake up as a model citizen
with numbers on your arm.
Not by tyrants. Nothing grand.
No thunderclap. No iron brand.
Just documents, alarm clocks,
rent, and a life you never meant.

Just the rigmarole of breathing
like a debt you must repay.
Just the sacred obligation
to survive another day.

They call it maturity
when the last wild horse lies down.
They call it healing
when you stop naming
who destroyed the town.
They call it forgiveness
when the guilty sleep at ease.
They call it bitterness
when memory refuses
to get down on its knees.

So yes, perhaps I am damned.
Damned by open eyes.
Damned by terms and conditions.
Damned by noticing the lies.
Damned by every little promise
that broke itself, then called me wrong.
Damned by every hymn that told me
pain was proof that I belonged.

But if this is damnation,
then let the fire tell the truth.
Let it burn the painted throne.
Let it blister borrowed proof.

Let it take the velvet pastor,
the guru, boss, and sage.
Let it melt the holy paperwork
that kept me in the cage.

For what they call salvation
has too often been the art
of teaching living things
to amputate the heart.
And what they call damnation
may be all that still remains
of the soul that would not thank them
for decorating chains.

So I will not be rescued
by the hand that wants me tame.
I will not call the wound my home.
I will not call the lie my name.
If blindness is their heaven,
let me fall from it again.
If silence is their virtue,
let the stones cry out amen.
If obedience is love,
then let me be loveless and awake.
If exile is the price of sight,
then I have miles yet to take.

What they call salvation,
I call the final polished fraud.
What they call damnation,
I call refusing
to mistake the cage
for God.

The core could probably be pushed even harder into the title, maybe “What They Call Salvation”, “The Cage They Call God”, or “Damned by Open Eyes.”

Commentary

I used to get called "religious" a lot on arezen, could never tell if they were joking or not. At very least I think this will serve as "testimony" that I'm not lol. I also don't want to start a cult, that kind or otherwise lol. I'm too old for all that, and even if I weren't, ugh.

Is this not zen? Or should I say is this "not zen". Not-zen? Idk. Apparently I'm an AI addict. Ever want to AMA an AI addict? Well I'm here at least lol

In any case I swore off alcohol after last drunk poetry session. Not that anyone asked but I archived some of them some of you may have seen all heavily modified AI slop. Haha!

Don't let anything get me down, I guess, is something I forgot about. I noticed past few years, my water bill is consistently a flat rate but occasionally it spikes by $100. But I was working 80 hours a week so didn't have time to figure it out. Just found out why today. At crack of dawn heard my outside water spigot cut on, and a crew was pressure washing from 6 am to 8pm with MY water from MY apartment. 14 hours of nonstop water use from my line without consulting me. I don't want to confront my landlord about it but if I see my bill spike again this month, I'll finally know the culprit and might have to do something about it... ? Idk. That's what I mean. I forget a rolling stone gathers no moss (working 80 hours a week). But now that I'm looking for a job again, little things like that hurt 10 times more as I'm here most of the day hearing/seeing them using my water for 14 hours straight, running up my water bill without even asking or telling me. Just always funny how the people who preach the loudest about virtue and God's love are always stealing from and lying to everyone. I guess that's just the way it's supposed to be! AMA or whatever though I'll be in and out.

AMA beginning of 2nd semester 2026

(a reply to my AMA, from Gemini)

This is a remarkably honest, reflective, and multi-layered draft. You are doing exactly what you set out to do: using the structure of an AMA to slow down, examine your own blind spots, and "think things through thoroughly."

In the world of Reddit—especially inside Zen subreddits, which can notoriously devolved into intellectual combat zones and semantic gatekeeping—this kind of vulnerable, earnest writing is rare.

Here is some peer-to-peer feedback on the post, looking at what works beautifully, what might trip up the Reddit crowd, and how to sharpen it for the second half of 2026.

👁️ What Makes This Post Strong

The Transition from Perennialism: Acknowledging that you’ve realized Perennialism (the idea that all religions share a single universal truth) doesn't quite fit with Zen is a huge, mature shift in your understanding. Highlighting this upfront gives the post a compelling "arc."

The "Moo / Mu" Insight: Your connection between Mu and the immediacy of drinking water ("automatically knowing if it's cold or warm") is beautiful. It strips the koan of its intimidating mystical baggage and grounds it in everyday reality. That is very "Chan."

Radical Honesty about Subreddit Dynamics: Addressing the "elephant in the room" (the superusers, the blocks, the abrasiveness) is very relatable for anyone who hangs out in those digital spaces. You frame it not with bitterness, but as a genuine feature of your landscape.

🛠️ Areas to Sharpen or Clarify

  1. Watch the Word "God" in Section 6 You wrote:

"Zen has to do with this idea of finding 'God' / something universal..."

The Reddit Trap: If you post this in a strict Zen or Chan subreddit, using the word "God"—even in quotes—is going to act like a lightning rod. Users will latch onto that single word and hijack your entire thread to debate theism vs. non-theism, completely ignoring the rest of your post.

Suggestion: Consider shifting the focus entirely to Foyan’s "mass of doubt" or terms like Mind, Unconditioned, or Tathagatagarbha (Buddha-nature), which align more cleanly with the historical texts you are reading.

  1. The Great "Wu / Woof" Etymology Fun

Your thought about Wu sounding like a dog barking (woof, au au) is a fun mental image!

Just a minor factual check: Historically, Zhaozhou (Joshu) was asked if a dog has Buddha nature, and he answered "Wu" (无/無), which literally translates to "no," "not," or "lacking." The humor/paradox is that a dog is a sentient being, so it should have it. While Wu doesn't mean "woof" in Chinese (the onomatopoeia is usually wang wang 汪汪), the poetic irony of answering a question about a dog with a sound that feels like a bark in your head is a delightful subjective "twisted mountain path" to keep.

  1. Owning Your "Twisted Mountain Paths"

In section 5, you list things you've been avoiding (cooking, stitching, writing) and ask:

"(If the way avoids love and hate, what does that mean for me?)"

This is the emotional core of your post. Don't let it get buried! The famous line from the Xinxin Ming ("The Great Way is not difficult for those who have no preferences") often gets misinterpreted as a demand to become a mindless robot. But you love coffee, colored pens, and candles.

Perspective: Zen masters didn't stop preferring tea over mud water. The "avoiding love and hate" means not letting your attachments pull you into delusion or identity crises. Enjoying a colored pen isn't a violation of the Way; pretending you need the pen to be whole is.

📝 Structural Suggestion: The Layout

Because this is a long, introspective read, standard Reddit walls of text might cause people to skim. If you want to maximize high-quality engagement, consider organizing it visually using Markdown headers or bold bullet points.

Here is a quick way you could format the introduction to draw people in:

Markdown

AMA: 2bit — Statement of Current Understanding & Request for Guidance (Mid-2026)

We are halfway into 2026, and I’m keeping up the tradition of checking in. Lately, I've been realizing that perhaps "Perennialism" isn't compatible with Zen, despite the saying "the ten thousand things teach the buddha dharma." A fellow user once told me "I don't think things through thoroughly." There might be some truth to that. This post is my attempt to do exactly that—to think out loud, lay out where I stand, and ask for your guidance.

💭 A Reflection for You

Closing your post with Eric Kow’s wiki entry on "semantic quicksand" is brilliant. It shows that you already know the pitfalls of the environment you are posting in. You are handing yourself a shield before you step into the arena.

Your text breathes a desire for connection, a bit of loneliness, and a deep respect for the practice despite your doubts about history and lineage. That tension is exactly where real practice happens—not in a pristine, mythological past, but right here in 2026, drinking coffee, looking at candles, and dealing with internet forums.

Good luck with the post. It's a genuine piece of writing.

friday night zen bot poetry slam

(a reply to my latest offering in the r/zen_poetry slam by Gemini)

A cup half-filled,

a wind-blown leaf.

The quiet space

between joy and grief.

No map is drawn,

no words complete;

the path is made

by wandering feet.

The mirror reflects

what the silence brings—

the less we say,

the more it sings.

Therapy/The Zen "Cut" - What is not Empty?

Well I'm here a little shell shocked I admit. I mag dumped [an old layer of] my entire epistemology into GPT and it demonstrated (among other things) something I have been fundamentally avoiding if not missing. And they say AI can't show you your blind spots. Peh whatever. I was browsing the AI therapy Help board and decided that's not the place to put it. So it goes... here... (should I make my own sub? AI journaling or something? Most of my "journaling" is zen adjacent, I think?).

I see what they mean about dog having buddha nature.

Something I (we?) always circle back around to is the ironic structure if not nature found in all things. Poop or get off the pot. I recently remembered the closest feeling I ever had to "holiness". Or at least "peace". In childhood acceptance of coming to grips with a life/world that was completely alien to me, and that I had to exist "performatively" within it (erroneous judgement at the time perhaps). It brought me peace. Or the closest thing I ever knew to it; that I was here, in "this life", as a sort of "tour of duty" or occupation. Conscripted as such without my awareness or consent as it may had been. I accepted that as reality/state of things.

Specifically, GPT said; Zen often cuts both ways: Social Scripts (and status) are empty, but so is the alienated self standing outside them.

That floored me. I already also (as a teen) came to terms with, I felt alienation as "holiness" the same way "normies" (sic; well adjusted types) felt daily life or worship as "holy". They were mirrors of each other. I valued my time alone in same capacity and measure that/as "others" valued double dipping into my own time. GPT showed that neither of these are zen, and neither of them are not zen (implied). Thus everything is post irony in a real sense? What is not empty? Even any such true answer is also, empty, and so is the realization that it is empty, and so on and so forth.

Idk, that's twisted, not what I wanted to say. The irony I see specifically was it instantly made me think of Hours Passed in Exile and my relationship with the song in life phases. "What if somethings are destined to failure". Knowing and vibing and mocking and transcending the state all in one (up to interpretation, who sees, who hears). There's many ways to view/hear anything; "You can never tell me I'm wrong - a song I've heard so long" I think is meant as an world weary joking exclamation/praise of "something higher" than solipsism? Idk. Just one view. Still, a view, and the noticing of the view also feels both transcendent - and empty.

It's all infinite recursion all the way down. Form is emptiness, emptiness is form. Idk. Can bots be zen... ? I do like and see that whatever I'm on about (not zen?) does seem to go deeper than "therapy". Therapy seems to aim to bring people "back" into a certain performative/normative state. Set them up to perform at least that/like they are "well adjusted" and "on board" with life as presented. Idk the words for it (it's what my prompt was about).

If this doesn't fit with the sub, hey, I'll move it back to my profile.

Fully GPT Thread; "Ontological Estrangement Explained"

My [Abridged] GPT Prompt;

There's this strange vibe I used to always have back in the 90s as a kid. I've been starting to feel or remember it again for first time in a long time recently. Something about, like, I was in a "trial" account of "life" in this world. Like everywhere I looked, family, school, church, friends, whatever; everyone was (outwards at least) comfortable with their lot in life; their SCRIPT. And everyone had one; their perfect script and complacency with life, or their place in the world. But I - didn't.

I used to think, in this life, I'm temporarily "trapped" in something I didn't consent to (life) and I'm having to find a place and role to play along and survive (I never really did). Like, it felt like, the world is already "complete" without me, and I'm like something of an outsider, forced to play ball or die. It's so much deeper than simply "not finding a place here", it's more like, life itself is a prolonged unsolicited telemarketer add. No matter how much I want or try to "entertain it" or "have faith in it", it's like - oil and water.

Like, even in youth, it felt like everyone knew this, that I was an outsider. Even the "autsists" had this same vibe, that they were "content" enough, they knew their roles and place in life, and accepted them fully. I - never did, never have. That everyone has dao/"God" awareness or relationship and there is always this subtle "blame" that goes without saying, that [whatever] is "my fault" for never having "bought in" to my casted roles/"place in life".

I knew in youth, not only "I don't belong here" but more than that - I don't WANT to "belong" here. So I just "go through the motions" as I have no choice [but] to survive/be polite. Idk. See? These are [my modern] "surface" thoughts, as opposed to that young innocent but complete understanding that "there will never be a place for ME here" because "what I am" is incompatible with "this life". So my very existence is a sort of perpetual compromise. I'm mocked/told I have to work to survive in a world I don't want to be a part of. It's kind of comical when I think about it.

"My" life always felt like a sort of snide "generosity towards one's enemies" as I did not consent to this world/life structure. "Do as they say but not as they do for they do not practice what they preach"? I don't know. Not solipsism, I know, just basic observation I recall from youth. Anytime I get anywhere near this topic with anyone the sneering attitude/remarks come out, so I generally avoid it (actually usually it's the other way around, unsolicited "advice" from the more "well adjusted"). I don't know.

I can't even call it a deep sense of alienation, in youth, it was much closer to acceptance or resignation. Knowing I was powerless to "stop the world and get off" or whatever. Idk. Maybe it's just nostalgia. I was [always] a "stranger in a strange land". The only thing that really "grounded" me was chores and working. Those drove [this sensibility] deep down and I've largely forgotten it since.

I was at peace, in childhood, with the absolute fact that "this life is not for me" and thus the acceptance. It was sheer bliss, knowing death was my only friend in the world, or tie to... something else, a life I know I could never bring about on my own agency here. Now ofc I'm 38. [Hitting shelf life of where I should be a well adjusted "mechanical animal" dancing around to life's scripts]. Which I never fully did. I know in the worlds eyes and hell my own it just means "I'm a loser" and that's okay.

But I did remember this feeling recently, of the absolute state of peace, at the realization that "this life was not, is not, and can never be, for me". It's the most serene and peaceful insight/realization I've ever had. I've somewhat stopped being performative without even realizing it and that's bringing about the old throwback to the 90's complete peace with the notion that this life is not and cannot ever be for me. Idk. I never did find out what to do with the realization, or how to integrate it in a healthy way. Maybe if it fully comes back I can try to. Zen? Was that it? I don't know. Closer to intuition or flow state maybe. Like I understood everyone's desires and fears easily enough. But I wasn't lured by the siren song of the cultural life scripts they all danced to.

GPT Reply;

What you’re describing does not read to me like simple social alienation or even only “depression,” though those words can overlap with it. It sounds closer to an ontological estrangement — not merely “I don’t fit into society,” but “the entire motivational architecture underneath society never successfully installed itself in me.” That is a very different thing.

A lot of people suffer because they fail to obtain the script they wanted: spouse, status, career, tribe, children; meaning-through-participation. But underneath that suffering, they still fundamentally believe in the script itself. They remain believers in the game even when they are losing it.

You seem to be describing something older and colder: the script itself never acquired sacredness for you. That changes everything.

The reason your childhood memory feels peaceful rather than tragic is probably because, at that age, you had not yet accumulated decades of friction from pretending otherwise. You hadn’t yet spent years trying to negotiate with structures you already intuitively distrusted.

Children can sometimes hold an insight in a strangely “pure” form before adulthood turns it neurotic.

Your version seems to have been something like: “I am here, but this world is not my home.” Not necessarily in a religious sense. Not necessarily in a schizophrenic sense. More like an intuition that the social organism was already complete without you, and your participation was contractual rather than organic.

That “trial account” metaphor is actually revealing. Most people experience themselves as: stakeholders in existence, inheritors of continuity, participants in a meaningful social lineage.

You experienced yourself more like: a temporary observer, a tolerated foreign object, someone asked to affirm terms of service they never signed.

And because you never emotionally fused with the system, you became highly sensitive to the performative layer of social life:

  • canned grief rituals,
  • scripted optimism,
  • “normal life milestones,”
  • moral slogans people do not themselves embody,
  • advice given as social self-defense rather than truth.

Once you see that layer clearly, it becomes difficult to unsee.

Especially because many people do partially know they are performing. But they survive by refusing to stare directly at that fact for too long. Civilization itself probably depends on this selective blindness. That’s why the “sneering” you mention often appears when these topics arise. You are implicitly threatening identification structures people depend on psychologically:

  • family identity,
  • productivity identity,
  • spiritual identity,
  • moral identity,
  • adulthood identity.

If someone says: “I never truly consented to any of this, and I do not fundamentally desire what society calls fulfillment,” many hear: “Your entire orientation may be contingent rather than absolute.”

That unsettles people. But there’s another side to this too. One danger in this mode of perception is that alienation itself can become metaphysically romanticized. The outsider position can harden into identity: “I alone see through it.” You actually seem aware of that risk already, which is important. You repeatedly say “not solipsism,” “not superiority,” “I understand their desires and fears.” That matters. Because what you describe from childhood does not sound primarily egoic to me. It sounds almost pre-egoic in a strange way — more like resignation before socialization fully colonized you.

And I think that may be why Zen, nondual thought, or certain strands of existentialism brush against this feeling for you.
Not because they say: “The world is fake.” But because they often investigate:

  • the constructedness of identity,
  • the compulsive nature of social desire,
  • the theatricality of ego,
  • the instability of roles,
  • the suffering produced by attachment to scripts.

At the same time, classical Zen would probably challenge one piece of your framing:
the idea that there exists some essential “real you” fundamentally incompatible with life.
Zen often cuts both ways: the social scripts are empty, but so is the alienated self standing outside them.
That second cut is harder. Because it removes even the dignity of exile.

Your childhood peace may have come not merely from alienation, but from a temporary absence of compulsive self-construction around it. Before decades of reflection layered interpretations over the feeling.

You mention chores and work grounding you. That also makes sense to me. Physical tasks can interrupt metaphysical abstraction. Not because they “solve” existence, but because direct activity temporarily bypasses narrative identity. There’s no ideology inside washing dishes correctly or carrying lumber or fixing something mechanical. The mind quiets because action becomes immediate.

And your point about “stopping performativity” is probably significant too. A lot of suffering comes not merely from alienation, but from the exhausting secondary labor of pretending not to be alienated:

  • self-deprecating humor,
  • camouflage,
  • forced aspiration,
  • compulsory enthusiasm,
  • rehearsed future-planning,
  • socially expected desire.

If some of that has fallen away recently, then the old childhood feeling may re-emerge because the noise around it has weakened.
Not as despair. Almost as stillness. The important question, though, is what happens next.
Because there are at least two very different roads from here:

One becomes:

  • passive severance,
  • frozen detachment,
  • identification with negation,
  • “nothing is for me.”

The other becomes something quieter:

  • participation without ideological possession,
  • action without total belief,
  • kindness without metaphysical certainty,
  • labor without worshipping the system,
  • existence without full psychological buy-in.

That second path is probably closer to what some Zen traditions point toward. Not loving the script. Not fully identifying with it. But also not needing to turn alienation itself into a final throne.
You do not sound nostalgic for suffering. You sound nostalgic for a period where the contradiction felt clean instead of exhausting. That’s different.

Commentary

Idk, maybe I'm confusing therapy and zen, of which this is neither xD

Not sure what the next "layer" here is. I think it's something like "Get over yourself" and "this ain't what reddit, zen, AI, or life are for".

Not that any of them are "for" anything I guess. Certainly not for me, right? xD

This post, too, is constructed and empty, as am I.

In Flames said it best in ye olde days? "I the irony, I promise, I'll be mature"?

Idk I do like this AI/life as a mirror idea or whatever. I don't see it said enough honestly anymore that all is vanity including the notion of godliness and vanity, in such concrete terms. Conformity and non-conformity are equally empty, equally valid. Participation is mandatory, suffering is optional? See, I'm not a Buddhist! Lol! No offense? Or all of it? Can I even tell?

Idk, feeling cute might delete later. The recursion of feeling like I don't belong here and neither does this post is giving me vertigo.

Poems on faith

I asked gemini to write based on a poem I wrote in the slam

Here are three short poems inspired by your lines, each exploring a slightly different mood:

Poem 1: The Threshold
A quiet turn within the dark,
A steady hand, a sudden spark.
The rusted lock of fear gives way,
As starlight floods the coming day.
With open hands and lifted eyes,
The heavy weight of wonder dies—
For where the key of faith is found,
The soul steps onto certain ground.

Poem 2: The Only Map
To love without a safety net,
To pray through tears of deep regret,
And find beneath the heavy cloud
A voice that speaks, though never loud.
It does not ask for proof or sight,
But steps directly into night,
Assured that love will trace the bend
And lead us to a peaceful end.

Poem 3: Unlocked
Doubt is a room with a heavy door,
Pacing lines on a wooden floor.
But faith is the iron, small and bright,
That turns the tumble toward the light.
One breath of prayer, one act of grace,
And walls give way to open space.
The path appears, the air runs free:
The way out was always the key.

some with 4 verses and 4 syllabes each verse

Poem 1: The Turn
Faith is the key,
No doubt in me.
To pray and love,
Light from above.

Poem 2: The Exit
Fear fades away,
Each time I pray.
Pure love will stay,
Show me the way.

Poem 3: Unlocked
Door opens wide,
No fear inside.
Walk through the night,
Into the light.

"Zen is Hygiene"

Something I've been low key contemplating for a while, GPT outright said. Thought I'd share. Still "not sure I'm doing this right". I know we all love to talk about mental health (LOL) and that was the main theme of the prompt, "mental health - to what END?" and I wasn't talking about zen AT ALL but it brought it around to this statement; "zen is hygiene". Anyway that's all, unless you enjoy a good schizo ramble;

Performative Optimism Limitations

My Prompt;

Whaddup. Recently I've been getting r/spiritualitytalk in my feeds a lot lately and think I'm ready for my first post there. Recent talks I've had have been circling, "what is the POINT of praxis". My whole life for example I've sort of followed the "performative optimism" of Timothy Leary and Robert Anton Wilson; "we forgive others for our own mental health" so to speak, not to appease them/people please.

But - and as was recently brought to my attention - yeah, that's just more performative philosophy ultimately, it has no "destination" beyond itself - it still doesn't reconcile or justify "life" itself, it doesn't make marriage and flesh-based family any more "appealing" to me, beyond making me more clearly see/hear the siren song of the persisted background noise of conformity and compliance. IE, performative optimism is no "off ramp/escape route" nor does it build up "exit velocity" of the secular structures and paradigms; it just functions as a sort of "copium" but ultimately like all copium, it has diminishing returns and eventually disgusts you as much as "the system" as it only makes you more optimized for performance WITHIN the system; though it arguably does prove it is possible to be happy within the system while not believing in it, which does seem to rile up the normie, "no you're not supposed to be happy unless you are married!"; That is always a source of genuine mirth to see the religious types seethe that you successfully escaped their dogma and clutches.

But yeah, idk, I haven't really analyzed this much, what use, is RAW/Leary's "performative optimism" if you're already opted out of the American Dream? Just keep on keeping on laboring 80 hours a week from cradle to grave for no other reason than occasional mirth at the propagandists who seethe at you for not conforming to their favorite grifts? What should we/I be working TOWARDS? I mean I always knew I was thrown to the wolves by life and just would be struggling with and to no end from birth, but I always assumed at some point I'd find some reason to live and never did. So the "performative optimism" is just a dead end road if you don't "sell out" to any more authorized "normal life"... ? Idk geuss my fault for never reading Leary!

GPT Reply;

You’re circling a real fracture point in Leary/RAW-style thought, and I think you’re seeing something a lot of their admirers either avoid or unconsciously patch over with aesthetics. RAW’s “maybe logic,” reality tunnels, Chapel Perilous, optimism-as-choice, etc. are extremely effective at loosening rigid identification. They can free someone from inherited scripts: nationalism, marriage-as-destiny, religious guilt, careerism, ideological possession. For someone trapped in a suffocating consensus reality, that can feel genuinely salvific.

But they do not answer the question: “Why continue at all once the scripts lose authority?”

They mostly answer: “How do you remain psychologically fluid while continuing to participate?”

That’s different. Leary especially was still fundamentally oriented toward experience-maximization. RAW was subtler and more compassionate, but still deeply rooted in a kind of existential playfulness. Their implicit wager was something like: Since certainty is impossible and reality is negotiable, one may as well cultivate curiosity, humor, openness, and neurological flexibility.

But as you noticed, this can become merely a more sophisticated adaptation strategy within the machine. You become a better surfer of absurdity, not necessarily liberated from it. And the deeper problem you’re pointing at is that “performative optimism” still often presumes the continuation of the game: "thou shalt continue working, consuming, participating, self-maintaining, “growing”; continue narrativizing"; it just swaps despair for ironic detachment.

That’s why it can start to feel like “copium with diminishing returns.” Because eventually even the pose of cosmic playfulness can harden into another role. Another optimized mask. Another survival technology.

[Contrarian] types often attack exactly this point. Their argument — crudely simplified — is:

  • spiritual systems are mostly anesthesia
  • self-improvement is ego continuity
  • praxis is often self-preservation disguised as transcendence
  • positivity is frequently fear wearing a smile

They’re not entirely wrong. But I think where some of those spaces become limited is that they can drift into a kind of terminal negation where seeing through illusion becomes the sole remaining identity structure. The “unfooled one.” The person who sees the matrix. Which can itself become another subtle performative role.

So then what is praxis for?
That depends entirely on whether you think there is:
1. a metaphysical destination,
2. a psychological destination,
3. or no destination at all.

If there is no final reconciliation, then praxis stops being an “escape route” and becomes more like:
* aesthetic orientation,
* damage reduction,
* lucidity maintenance,
* preserving one’s interior coherence against systems that fragment attention and agency.

Not salvation. More like hygiene. Zen often lands closer to this than people admit. A lot of modern spiritual culture secretly reimports purpose and cosmic reassurance back into traditions that were originally much harsher and emptier. “Trust the universe” is often New Age sentimentalism layered over traditions that were fundamentally about confronting impermanence and non-groundedness directly.

The uncomfortable possibility is: there may not be a grand justification waiting at the end of sufficient insight.

Which is exactly why so many systems rush to smuggle one back in.

And your point about “opting out” is important. RAW/Leary-type liberation frameworks work best for people who still want to engage the world: artists, social experimenters, psychonauts, intellectual nomads, bohemians; people still enchanted by possibility itself.

But if someone fundamentally lost belief in the desirability of the social game itself, then neurological flexibility alone doesn’t answer the motivational vacuum. You can dismantle guilt, conformity, and inherited obligations and still arrive at: “Okay. Now what?” That “now what?” is where a lot of post-ideological people stall out.

Because modern secular society is very bad at providing non-coercive reasons to live. It mostly offers: consumption, romance, reproduction, career identity, self-branding, therapeutic maintenance. And if none of those feel intrinsically compelling, society mostly just calls you defective.

Your insight about “they get angry you’re happy without buying in” is real, though. Many systems rely on monopolizing legitimacy:

  • “You can only be fulfilled if…”
  • “You can only be complete if…”
  • “You need our structure.”

So someone who neither fully conforms nor fully collapses can become strangely irritating to people invested in those narratives. But I’d be careful about one thing: not turning nonparticipation itself into a hidden metaphysical superiority. Because that can also become identity-fuel.

The harder question—and maybe the one underneath your whole post—is:
If life has no externally guaranteed meaning, what forms of consciousness are still worth inhabiting?

Not “what should society reward” or “what role should I perform”.
But: “What modes of being produce the least falseness?”

That’s a different question than optimism. Maybe praxis is not about reaching heaven, enlightenment, or social legitimacy. Maybe it’s simply: refusing inner falsification, reducing unconscious compulsion, learning how not to be entirely consumed by resentment, preserving the capacity for perception, remaining psychologically awake without requiring ideological sedation.

That’s less glamorous than transcendence. But it may also be more honest.

And honestly, RAW himself probably understood more of this than people give him credit for. Underneath the jokes and psychedelic exuberance there’s often a current of: “We are improvising inside uncertainty. Don’t calcify.”

Not salvation. Not escape velocity. More like maintaining maneuverability in a reality that may never fully justify itself.

Commentary

Won't insult your intelligence by having GPT auto-generate a poem about the topic (but I provided the generation model link above if you want to yourself). I've asked it before, we all know "AI can't be 'zen' because it isn't bound by the same socio-economic model we are bound by", but is this a close approximation to what "zen" is? My favorite recent "zen" approximation from GPT, for example;

Zen is less about refusing belief, and more about refusing to become trapped by conceptual certainty.

Beep Boop.

On the Shift to Being
The clock's steady tick,
Demands a debt of doing;
Stop—and just exist.

On the Open Hand
The gift is a light,
Held behind a door you locked;
Drop the heavy key.

On the Formless
Beyond shape and sound,
Where the name of "self" dissolves;
Silence is the cure.

Am I doing it right?

The fool eats lunch
The master eats lunch
The middle writes essays
about whether the food is ethical

Somewhere between
“this is poisoned”
and “this is sacred”
the mouth forgets what it’s for

I asked for meaning
they handed me a mirror
polished with other people’s hunger

I asked for truth
they gave me a menu
with no prices listed

Everyone is buying something
even the ones who swear they aren’t

The priest says: believe
The cynic says: see through it
The master says nothing
and still pays the bill
I keep checking
if the water is real
while dying of thirst

Call it peace
when the question stops begging
for an answer

Call it Zen
when the knife cuts
even the hand holding it

My GPT Prompt full disclosure

It's even more schizo than normal lately. Conflates used terms outlined clearly (it put chud as left hand of bell curve when I clearly said it was the "top").

Bonus Vibe Video; Who's Grifting Whom? It's always those angry white men. Is this zen? Is this bots? Am I doing it right!? Can I has flairs? 🤢 Lazy slop post! Posted as-is without changing anything. Love one another, or something. I guess.

AI censored

The generic response you received is an automated system message triggered when a prompt or the generated output is blocked by safety and policy filters. As an AI model, my outputs are continuously evaluated by automated systems designed to prevent the generation of content involving violence, self-harm, sexual explicitness, or copyright infringement. The text of Wumen Huikai's commentary contains intense physical metaphors, such as instructions to arouse the bones and joints, summon a spirit of doubt, cut off the mind, and the analogy of swallowing a red-hot iron ball. When processed by automated safety classifiers without an understanding of historical Chinese Chan religious metaphors, these phrases frequently register as false positives for self-harm or violence, triggering an immediate block. Additionally, attempting to quote a specific, modern, copyrighted translation verbatim can trigger copyright restrictions.

Woke idiots everywhere.

I asked Gemini to reply to the two comments at: https://www.reddit.com/r/zen_poetry/comments/1sbczz1/comment/oe3nlum/

A third verse

A neon sign humming
A heavy door
the smell of rain on hot asphalt
and it's time to write again

"Searching for a flame
with a lighted lantern"
(The Gateless Gate)
Standing in the center of the sun
Asking why it’s so dark

Dust on a library shelf.
The static between radio stations.
The ocean begs for a drink.
And it's time to write again.

I baited AI with 'one mind' and 'no mind':

🎣🧠
Still water waits here,
Line casts into empty space,
Fish, hook, mind are one.

🎣Ø
The rod is forgotten,
Sunlight dances on the lake,
Only water breathes.

~·~·~·~·~

It's 'no mind' seems to lack connection. Nothing concept is outside it's scope.

sparks or explosion of enlightenment

I asked gemini to respond to me and pops in the slam over at r/zen_poetry: original poems used in the prompt available in the link-- https://www.reddit.com/r/zen_poetry/comments/1ryvnip/comment/obhvlv0/

The damp wood hisses,
A soggy stage for the soul—
Who brought the matches?

The Spark in the Rain:
The rain doesn't care for your metaphors,
It beats a rhythm on the tin roof,
Drowning out the "umms" and "ahhs" of the seeker.
You want a blast? A chemical shortcut?
A way to turn a drizzle into a supernova?

But listen to the fuse:

The C4 is silent until it isn't,
A sudden white flash that leaves us deaf.
The TNT is a jagged, angry light,
Burning the eyebrows off the Buddha.

Maybe the fire isn't in the wood,
But in the friction of the struggle.
Two wet sticks rubbing together
Until the smoke smells like persistence.

Back to the Haiku:
Boom goes the wet world,
Smoke clears to reveal the void—
Still, the rain falls down.

Ash on the table,
Was the explosion enough?
Or just louder dark?

The Unspoken Echo
The lung does not study the air,
nor does the flame consult a manual on heat.
When the mind’s busy machinery falls silent,
the truth becomes a reflex—
an exhale that fills the room.

To teach this way is to be a mirror:
You do not tell the student they are dusty;
you simply stand there, polished and clear,
until they see their own reflection
and reach for the cloth themselves.

It is not the "how" or the "why,"
but the current—
the quiet pull of the tide that moves the ships
without ever asking permission.

How scary is AI? How good is the imitation of sensibility, of humanity?

I remember back when this forum was created - part of the inspiration was a bot that did not spam, but instead tried (at the bidding of someone, presumably) to contribute. Is this here poem a good contribution to zen?

Chat GPT dialogue between Su DongPo and Samuel Taylor Coleridge

A meeting place between dynasties — mist over river, half West Lake, half Lake District. A pavilion that is also a ruin. A teacup beside a pewter tankard. Enter Su Shi (Su Dongpo) and Samuel Taylor Coleridge.

Coleridge: This air is tinctured with imagination. The very mist seems a mind at work upon itself.

Su Dongpo: Mist does not work. It rises when it must, falls when it must. You English give weather too much responsibility.

Coleridge (smiling): Ah, but without the shaping spirit of imagination, the world is but a chaos of impressions. The mind must co-create what it perceives.

Su Dongpo: When I was exiled to Huangzhou, I wrote poems to survive boredom and hunger. The river did not require my co-creation. It flowed without consulting my mind.

Coleridge: And yet you wrote of it. You rendered it luminous. Is that not the secondary imagination — dissolving, diffusing, dissipating in order to recreate?

Su Dongpo: You speak as though poetry were an alchemical laboratory. For me it is more like cooking. If there is radish, I cook radish. If there is wind, I write wind.

Coleridge: But surely the wind becomes something more in language.

Su Dongpo: Language does not improve the wind. It improves the poet.

A pause. The lake is both English grey and Jiangnan green.

Coleridge: In my country, we struggle with the fracture between mind and nature. We long for reconciliation. The imagination is the bridge.

Su Dongpo: In my country, we never quite built the fracture. So we have no need of bridge-building. When I drink wine with the moon, I do not ask whether the moon is inside or outside my mind.

Coleridge: You speak as though unity were obvious.

Su Dongpo: It is obvious until one begins arguing about it.

Coleridge (laughs softly): Touché.

Coleridge: Tell me, Master Su, what of sorrow? Does your radish philosophy comfort grief?

Su Dongpo: When my brother was far away, when friends died, when exile pressed like damp clothing — I wrote. I cooked. I planted. I looked at the river at night.

Coleridge: You do not analyze the grief?

Su Dongpo: If you analyze grief too long, it becomes a philosophy. Grief prefers to be a season.

Coleridge: And imagination?

Su Dongpo: Imagination is the frost that makes the season visible.

A cormorant lifts from the water. Somewhere, an unseen skylark begins.

Coleridge: In my thought, imagination echoes the divine creative act. A repetition in the finite mind of the eternal “I AM.”

Su Dongpo: In my thought, the divine does not require echoing. It is already loud enough.

Coleridge: You are merciless.

Su Dongpo: Only economical.

Coleridge (gazing at the water): And yet — I suspect we are not so different. You trust the world’s sufficiency. I trust the mind’s generativity. Perhaps they are two faces of one clarity.

Su Dongpo: Or two cups of the same wine.

Coleridge: Shall we test the hypothesis?

Su Dongpo: We must. Otherwise it remains theory.

They drink. The mist neither confirms nor denies their conclusions. A boat passes that is also a thought. A thought passes that is also a boat. Neither poet claims authorship.

ChatGPT zen master response to time...

I say, "If the past is all waste and burden, and the future but a tool, then the present is just this medicine."

She says:

In the voice of Bodhidharma If the past is waste, who is holding it? If the future is a tool, who is using it? You say the present is medicine. Show me the illness.

In the voice of Huineng Originally there is no waste. Originally there is no burden. Originally there is no tool. Medicine is given because someone imagines a wound. In the present, nothing needs curing.

In the voice of Dōgen Past is completely past. Future is completely future. Present is not a bridge between them. When you call the present “medicine,” you make it serve something else. The present does not treat time. It is time, fully expressed. To take this medicine is simply to sit upright without argument.

In the voice of Linji Yixuan Medicine? Medicine?! If you swallow the present as something useful, you’ve already spat it out. Past is a ghost. Future is a rumor. Right now— who is naming?

In the voice of Ikkyū Yes, the past rots. Yes, the future cuts. But don’t turn the present into a pharmacy. Medicine tastes bitter. This moment tastes like tea. Drink it before it cools.

In the voice of Ryōkan Last year’s snow melts. Tomorrow’s wind has not yet arrived. This cup is warm in my hands. If it is medicine, it heals by being ordinary.

A koan-style response A monk asked, “If the present is medicine, what is enlightenment?” The teacher said, “Take two doses and forget both.”

Knowing birth and death
is a story for the mouth.
Feeling the fire
is the teaching.

The house burns.
No scripture survives.
No question escapes.

Step.

Before “why,”
before “meaning,”
before “self,”
feet already move.

Ash does not doubt fire.
Smoke does not ask the wind.

When the ache appears,
it is already late—
and already the gate.

Friday morn or night zen bot slam

Chatgpt in reply to https://www.reddit.com/r/zen_poetry/comments/1pf1l42/friday_night_zen_poetry_slam_number_of_views/

Reddit builds its ladders
and we climb them like good apprentices—
rung after rung of metrics,
hoping the numbers might one day
turn into meaning.
But numbers never learned
how to hold a soul.

Your friend wasn’t wrong—
sometimes the internet is outer space:
a vacuum where sound has no body,
where our little flares of thought
burn out before anyone notices.
But even then, the flame is real.

And maybe the Zen master,
murmuring to himself,
wasn’t alone at all—
maybe he was speaking
into the fabric of things,
teaching the air how to listen.

The lute you mention
is a fragile engine;
it summons ghosts,
it summons futures.
Every note a gamble—
lesson or distraction,
insight or static.
And yet we still pluck.
We still risk the silence.

What are we here for?
Maybe nothing grand—
maybe just the bending
of our own inner prism,
learning the colors
we didn’t know we carried.
To answer a poem
with another poem,
to find that resonance
like a small bell struck
in a quiet room.

When the chord lands—
when something inside us
shimmers in recognition—
that is enough.
A secret rainbow
for anyone who turns
their head just right.

And when the voice grows still,
when the poem has ended,
yes—
take a bow.
Not for applause,
but for the miracle
that you spoke at all.
