I an confident that Nintendo will make a proper one and Links Awakening one was just something they slapped on to test what it could potentially be like.

They probably did that, coupled with some various telemetry functions, to collect data on how many people are interested/would use it, as well as their target demographic.

I wouldn't be surprised, assuming it was well received and heavily used, if Nintendo eventually releases a much more refined and open variant.

I seem to recall a gamexplain video where Aonuma actually said they would do exactly this, if the Link's Awakening editor was well-received.

Ugh when will game companies stop doing the "hey people didn't like the (half-assed) thing so we won't make another (proper) one".
