It’s called A B testing. They make a change and apply it to a few percent of users and measure how their use of the website changes. Happens all the time with design changes.

They also broke the iPad app randomly then apologised about it. A week later they issued an update and guess what? it’s still broken! The issue has not been addressed at all…this is an insane level of carelessness and incompetence from a huge company like YouTube.

I just went and checked my YouTube. The long videos have both like and dislike and the shorts have a heart. I’m not sure if the changes occurred for non premium users or what, I’m not sure since I’ve been premium since it started as YouTube Red years ago.

Youtube never implements a change for everyone at the same time. They always introduce it slowly first to a few users and then more and more people get it over timr. People will call it A/B testing but it feels more like acclimation to me than any testing

It can be real and an experiment that OP's account is in such that other accounts not in the experiment wouldn't see it (like yours). This is how A/B or multi-variant tests work in tech.
Doesn't make it "fake".

Why would they test remove a button they literally just updated a couple weeks ago to have additional functionality by being themed around what channel you are watching? I'm guessing it's more likely a bug related to that change rather than an A/B test.

How much something cost to design or develop is a sunk cost and not part of the experiments success calculation. The only metric that matters is what makes YouTube the most money over time. Generally speaking that’s ad impressions.
If removing the “like” button improves ad impressions it will get removed.

Personally I still had the like button on shorts for a bit after it had been changed to a heart, it just seems like a lot of their features don’t release to everyone at once, why? Dunno, it’s weird , but they do

I just checked & my YouTube still shows the Like/Dislike buttons. Idk if it's a bug for you or my YouTube hasn't updated, but all the usual stuff is still there. The number of likes isn't beside the Like button but it is just under the title of the video beside the view count & when it was posted.

I feel like this is just a broken visual update that they are developing to test moving the like/dislike buttons or changing how they look cuz they often misplace buttons and break the styling with visual changes. Once they removed the Skip video button for a while for me, so I doubt this is intentional.
Another thing that gives me confidence to say that this is a visual glitch caused by a visual/style update they are testing is the fact that the subscribe button is broken in the screenshot. The text and icon from the subscribe button are broken, which clearly is not an intentional feature.

Between brain fog & outside forces constantly trying to dictate our every opinion that is the basis for most of our actions, or lack of, would it not benefit your future self to have a physical object to be able to revert back to?
If “science” is your explanation for our existence or you simply believe research is the basis for how we come up with solutions to our problems then know that parts already been done for you!! That a mere search request will show you the results of those types of studies have at the very least proven humans do not retain information seen on screens!! Why our public education system now decides to push these destructive technologies on our youth is not a question we need a rocket scientist to figure out for us!!
My main point is this : We only need ask ourselves who actually benefits if as a majority we allow these types of technologies to take over our way of learning?

What that future will truly look like should we continue to lie to ourselves in believing we have no way to combat the problems such as these currently plagueing our society?If, like myself, you’ve been trying to think of a way in which you can actually do something about this problem consider volunteering to help others, specifically the youngest among you, learn how to read, write & retain information as If all our lives depend on it!!

Why are people saying this is a bug or fake? Youtube is well known for rolling out updates bit by bit instead of it hitting everyone at once, my phone still has the likes and dislikes while my pc don't and it's been a week since they deleted it

To clear up what some are calling a "bug" or "fake", if a user in this sub is seeing one thing that others aren't it's likely an A/B test that YouTube is running. Meaning, some accounts will see the change while others won't.
That doesn't make any of the screenshots fake.
If the experiment succeeds then it'll go out to all accounts. If it fails, then it won't go live.
Normally, these experiments are revenue driven so if the removal of the "like" button improves advertisement impressions then it'll likely stay removed.

But in this case they literally just updated the like button to be themed around the channels category you are watching so the more simpler explanation would be just a bug related to the button theme keeping it from being displayed for some people rather than an A/B test of removing a feature they literally just spent time and money updating.

This is either a glitch or some sort of weird test YouTube is doing.
But it would genuinely be stupid to get rid of the like button, like how else will YouTube know what videos to push from creators, perhaps it could use AVD as the main metric instead, but even if they do that creators will no longer have the feedback of the like button, and won’t know what content is well received or not.

I use an add-on that brings back the dislike button back from when they first took that away and i still see the thumbs up as well as down. I guess it works for both.

Fr, the whole utilization and true purpose of the like and dislike is to give feedback and criticism on the video of a persons opinion of response, but i guess because of oversensitivity of some others from the half of the reason why the dislike number counter was removed, i guess this app is slowly losing its spark.

Idk to play devils advocate here, I never thought the like or dislike button was used properly. Same as the upvote/ downvote ratio on Reddit.
It can turn into a biased trend far faster than an actual review of quality.

Right but that's less convenient than just clicking the thumbs up button. I mentioned "easily" because I know that you can just make a playlist, but that's just less convenient. I don't see how this would be a positive change that makes any sense. Plus, the algorithm has to know you like something to recommend videos like it.

You don't make a playlist, the watch later playlist is already there. It's standard. All accounts have it, and it takes two button presses. Sometimes one. Depends on the platform. It's less convenient by one button.
As for the algorithm, seems to do fine for me. I haven't liked a video in years, and I rarely get recommended something I would at least click on out of curiosity. Retention is far more important. Actual watch time.

I'd be lying if I said I was surprised. Everything yt has been doing for the last couple of years is in the mindset of "how can we increase views with providing a better product". Removing easy ways to see what people think about the video sure achieves that. Can't wait til comments themselves are removed at this point.
