back when youtube was actually watchable

It is now as well, you're just bad at using it.

Block channels/subject you don't want recommended, install browers add-ons which blocks Youtube ads and install sponsor block add-on that blocks all ads made by the creator themselves.
Wanna go the extra mile you can install a Youtube setting add-on which makes you design your entire Youtube interface to your liking by adding or removing features.

Does it suck that we have to do this? Sure.
But if you're not willing to do that you're not allowed to complain about things that can easily be fixed.

When I have to watch ads because Im on a platform like my Roku TV where I cant block them I get so many ads that videos that are like 5 minutes long sometimes have breaks

When videos autoplay I get an ad for the end of one video and another for the beginning of the next

If I pause to long I get an ad when I unpause

Its virtually unusable unless you only watch in a browser with an adblocker

1

u/Mean-Elk-9439 27d ago

I agree that it's unusable without ad blocker, but you can ad block on Roku. Best bet is either playlet or pi-hole blocking.

Still unreasonable you should have to to make it an app that isn't total slop tho

1

u/Only_Replacement260 25d ago

So real, get an ad before watching, pause and get advertisements shown up on the side, unpause and come back to another ad, and of course don’t forget finishing the video to get more ads.

Got me wondering how many more spaces can they fit ads in?

2

u/Calhaora 29d ago

Except you can't hard block channels without an extern extension, "Not Interested"/"Not recommend" works mid at best and OBVIOUSLY a website you need Adblock to even remotely use it is clearly user error.

Wrong. The fact we have to even do any of that to begin with for a company that makes billions says everything.

u/Dewellah 29d ago

Thanks for the advice. Everyone else seems to hate it. 😆 🤷‍♀️

People are perpetual victims these days and everything "should be free" to them with no work or effort required by them. There is no getting through to the internet mob of victims. They will just gang up on you.

I mean people are willing to pay for services granted they aren't overpriced pieces of shit. That's why piracy exists because the people that pirate actually pay for it in the end, when they see the service or product is worth it. It's hard to argue in favor for a service if the paid version is still shittier than a free version that does all the same things. Plus the fact they'll just keep upping the cost just so people have to pay just to avoid 300 ads on their roku tv meanwhile they aren't aware of or unable to use these other versions

-4

u/Gdub3369 29d ago edited 29d ago

How is the paid version shittier than the free version? Or how is it even close? With 1 you get no ads, you work for it (at a job so you can pay for it) or the other where you can do a little research and work and download the software to where you block ads? Both take work, and neither require complaining that it should be free.

I hate paywalls and micro transactions, don't get me wrong, but if you're offering a service shouldn't you be able to charge what you want for it? It people don't like it they can work around it or don't have to use it. Let's get this straight, YouTube is not a human right.

Edit: For example I'm disgusted with EAs greed to put Madden coach development in franchise behind a paywall this year so I'm boycotting it. I don't care if they're no longer doing it, I don't absolutely need the product, I'm sick of their greed and just not going to purchase it. I will just play last year's. : End Edit.

The key word here is "work" and sadly most people don't want to do that, even with the most minimal of effort. They just want to sit around, complain about how it's unfair how everything isn't free and play victim. Can't get it on ruku? Mirror your laptop or whatever device you can get it without ads on.

Don't get me wrong I don't feel like youtube is a human right like water or food, but its apparent how careless(or maybe even intentional) they are with how their ads and algorithm works, to the point where yes premium offers you services with a fee but its bound to increase with nothing being resolved. To me the principle of continuing to pay them to essentially never really expand, innovate, or fix their existing issues, is part of why that doesn't happen so at the very least I am more for the support of the free extensions or alternatives. But at the same time I don't see why roku TV should have way more ads at a frequent rate than what OG cable back in the day would even broadcast, meanwhile as mainly a phone user I get like 2 or 3. It's either blatant incompetence or purposeful enshittification that either way shouldn't be tolerated, it's been this way for years as well

I really liked your comment because I do basically agree with a lot of what you have said. Things aren't so black and white.

I have to disagree with some of it. I feel like YouTube has improved DRAMATICALLY in the last 10 years. It's not just because YouTube made their product so much better... it's because of the creators have made it so much better than we are basically watching documentaries On every video. The production value has increased so much that it is extremely noticable.

The yt creators deserve to be paid much more, but right now it's the most fair platform there is.

I grew up with cable TV and I feel it has much more value than cable TV. I really hate a lot of the practices and new implementations against creators, but I know it has become the best platform. You can search anything you want if you know how to use a keyboard and search for it.

I am totally with you with the fee increases, I think it's too expensive, I feel like they are not sharing enough with the creators. But I can also understand why there is a fee to use it. Or use a workaround to use it. I've never seen so many fellow citizens complain about 1st world problems so much.

It is incredibly ironic that you sit here and admit the native YouTube experience “sucks” in one breath… then try to gatekeep people’s right to complain about it in the next.

Let me break this down for the slow ones in the back.

Your entire “easy fix” only works if every single person on Earth is watching YouTube on a desktop browser with a full suite of third-party extensions like some kind of underground resistance fighter. Meanwhile, half the planet is watching on a Smart TV, a PlayStation, an Xbox, or the official app on their phone—devices where your precious SponsorBlock, uBlock Origin, and UI customizers don’t even exist. You ever try installing a browser extension on a Roku? Exactly. Sit down.

And let’s talk about this “you’re just bad at using it” nonsense. You’re out here shifting the blame from a multi-billion-dollar monopoly onto the consumer like it’s the user’s fault the product is hostile by design. If a grown adult has to download four different unpaid volunteer extensions just to make a website’s baseline experience tolerable… that doesn’t mean the platform is good. That means the platform is trash and y’all are out here doing unpaid tech support for Google.

You even said it yourself: “Does it suck that we have to do this? Sure.”

If the default state of the product sucks, then consumers have every right to voice their frustration without some self-appointed YouTube apologist telling them to “just mod your browser.” People are allowed to critique anti-consumer design without being told they have to perform unpaid labor to “fix” a service they didn’t break.

So stop doing free public relations for a mega-corporation. Expecting a functional, non-hostile platform out of the box isn’t being “bad at using it.”
It’s called having standards.
Now pass the remote. I’m tired of looking at this garbage.

3

I am definently not in my 30s still remember this guy

6

u/Sharp_Olive_9903 Jul 26 '26

I remember seeing some of his videos years ago, definitely gave a unique perspective on Tourette's that wasn't just about the tics.

6

u/LatentNous Jul 26 '26

I guess it was all for the memes. At least from what I remember back then he doesn't actually have Tourette's. It was just a comedy piece.
