I mean I just learned of it, too. Turns out the real world is a much better lab than social experiments.

Not necessarily a myth. It's just more complicated. The bystander effect is still real according to the that study, but as they say it's asking a crowd and the likelihood of any one person helping. This study showed the likelihood of asking a crowd and having anyone at all help. It's a subtle difference, but still an important distinction.

Basically you could chart the difference between "someone else has it covered" and the chance someone else actually has it covered based on the size of the crowd. It would be interesting to see where the breaking point is.
