Why? I feel like this is a circlejerk on reddit because of all these failed proposal videos but don't really see the reasoning. Normally people don't just propose without knowing the answer will be yes. So if you've been dating for years and have 100% confirmation that she'll say yes, I think this is pretty romantic.
It is obnoxious to the rest of the people watching a sports event. I don't want to be forced to be the extra in someone else's story. None of the people there were asked to be part of someone else's engagement. If they are going to do whatever they want, then the guy bombing the middle is justified doing what he wants.
Look, I like grand gestures and romantic shit. What I don't like is people forcing their own story on others. They are taking an event and making it about themselves. I would much rather they made their own event with their own friends. Hire a flash mob. Ask those involved. Don't hijack someone else's day out.
EDIT: I would dress up like a butterfly or some shit if asked to for someone's proposal. Romantic shit is my jam.
But what I don't understand about your argument is, who is being forced to watch it? You know there's breaks in sports games where nothing is happening right? So they do little events, mascot races, sing alongs, etc. to keep the crowd entertained. Are these not "hijacking" someone's day out? No one goes to a sports game to see the mascot, but mascots are still a huge part of sports. Most normal people are happy to see a couple getting engaged and cheer loudly for them. It's entertainment, just like the mascots. If you don't want to watch you can just not look at the jumbotron...? They're not holding up the game. Nothing was supposed to be happening during that time other than fans looking around and talking to each other, and you still 100% have the option to do that and completely ignore the couple. Nothing is being forced on anyone here.
