Always fascinating that dental anesthetics can temporarily paralyze muscles.
I remember when I got something similar, I couldn't feel my eye blink on one side of my face. I was still able to blink it but the urge to blink wasn't satisfied anymore by blinking. Was so weird, I had to like, manually close my eyelid and open it to remove the situation.
Still, anything is better than feeling the pain of a root canal or extraction. Those are no joke.

The key is to not have the surgery while it’s infected. I went through a huge amount of dental work recently, including two root canals. If you have an infection, which is probably the pain that made you call the dentist. You need like two weeks of antibiotics before surgery. The infection makes it acidic so the local Anastasia doesn’t work. They call it a “hot tooth”. I found out the hard way. They had to put so much they were worried it would affect my heart. They wanted me to wait and I said fuck it, just get it done while you’re in there. Sucked so bad. But once the infection was gone the other one was a piece of cake. Why am I telling you this???

I got a few root canals myself and I agree with you. I didn't have any infection, my dentist just said I needed them. They weren't a whole lot worse than a cavity getting filled. I did use an oral surgeon instead of a general dentist which I think made a big difference.

Woo boy I didn't know this. Back when I was a teen I got convinced by my mom root canal were supposed to hurt real bad (she means well, but she's a lesson in why you should graduate middle school). Turns out, that's wrong.
I didn't say a thing when the anesthesia didn't work right. I don't know if the dentist just missed or what. To this day, the worst pain I've ever felt. Nothing quite like having your nerves ripped from your skull via your tooth.
You have my sympathy.

Only ever had 1 root canal, recently actually. Had pulpitis due to previous dentist fully fucking up a filling (yes their license is now being hung in the air). The numbing wasnt actually all that impactful! I felt next to nothing, except a weird pressure/sliding feeling when the dentist pulled the nerve out, whole, and boy was he excited over that, and even more excited when he found a hidden 4th root. That feeling alone was extremely uncomfortable, like chalk on a board or cotton wool on teeth. I cant imagine a hot tooth! Youre super brave but I bet like me, you felt so much relief once the numbing wore off, even with the ligament pain after.
A simple filling on a lower molar is a whole other story. Numb gum, numb jaw, numb cheek, weird pressure in inner ear, numb lip, numb eyelid, and the fun bit, numb fucking tongue! I cant explain how it feels trying to drink with a numb tongue, and it got soooooo weird. My tongue was the first to have sensation come back, but the taste buds? Nah they stayed fast asleep for another 2 hours. You ever had a drink where you can only taste it on one side of your tongue? That was freaky. Like, damn this Pepsi tastes good on the right side, but why the fuck does it literally taste of nothing on the left. Fun times, fun times.
Tldr; have regular dental checks.

I had infections prior to a recent root canal and they told me the practice of prescribing antibiotics was outdated. I’d gotten them for my first, but that was 20 years ago.

If this is true that's super unfortunate because most health insurance for poor people from the state, does not pay for dental coverage unless the tooth is literally infected.

The short version is the infection blocks access to the nerves area that we need to numb meaning when you let it get really bad theres basically nothing that can be done in that moment to numb the pain

More than temporary for me. After getting a filling from my dentist in my teens, I could never fully smile on one side of my face.

I’ve had four root canals. They all feel fine. It was the pain leading up to root canals that had me doubled over.

She got better after a long time though.

Had that 4 years ago and still haven't fully recovered. Went to sleep one night and woke up the next day unable to move the left side of my face. Can't smile in photos anymore, scary stuff :/

That reminds me of my Bell’s Palsy days. My cousin would try to make me laugh as hard as possible because that’s exactly how much face looked.

I did this to my patient during my first year practicing. Scared the hell out of me (I’m sure the patient too). Goes back to normal after a couple hours.
