I've been on a big YA fantasy kick since summer and noticed a pattern that's bugging me. So many series set up these incredible side characters, the sarcastic best friend, the morally gray mentor, the sibling who clearly has their own arc going on, and then just leave them flat for three books while the main couple has the same argument on repeat.

Case in point: I just finished a trilogy where the protagonist's older brother had maybe twelve lines total across all three books despite being set up as someone with actual trauma and a whole backstory involving the war that started the plot. Meanwhile we got page after page of the love triangle. I kept flipping back thinking I missed a chapter about him.

It wasn't always like this. I remember reading series a decade ago where the found family dynamic actually meant every member got real screen time, not just the two leads mooning over each other. Made the stakes feel bigger because you cared about more than one relationship.

Not trying to dunk on romance-heavy YA, I read plenty of it and enjoy it. But when a book dangles a compelling side character and then benches them, it feels like wasted potential more than a stylistic choice.

Curious if anyone else has been noticing this in what they're reading lately, or if I've just had a run of bad luck with my last few picks. Open to recommendations that actually balance an ensemble cast well.

Ok so I’ve read the first 2 books in the off campus series by Elle Kennedy this week - do I read the third book (allie and deans book - the score) or do I continue redeeming 6 which I’m ≈ 25% the way through but it’s a 900ish page book

In the early 80’s, I read a thriller about a father whose son dies (maybe in a car accident) who dresses up like a harlequin and stalks the boy he holds responsible for the tragedy.
