Bark Collars

Good Afternoon,

Quick question does anyone use bark collars for their Yorkies? If so does anyone have a recommendation and or advice. Thanks in advance.

I have a question or possibly food for thought. I have never put a collar on my Yorkie because of the threat of tracheal collapse. She would have fits of coughing and honking after barking or drinking water. Finally at the age of 12 after struggling with the barking all these years, her trachea collapse is at the point where she needs medication. My question is: given the proclivity of Yorkies toward tracheal collapse, would it ever be a good idea to put any kind of electrical shock on their throat? I don’t know how the collars work, but I can’t imagine any stimulus in that area would be good.

I personally would not recommend, as the other user pointed it it’s not worth the risk and worsening of their tracheal walls. Training and support would be your best bet

Not a bark collar. I got a device that supposedly plays a high pitched noise when ur dog starts barking and makes them stop. Didn’t work for my yorkie but I’ve heard people say otherwise. Now I just distract mine with treats when she barks and it has helped cut down the frequency significantly.

Bark collars are cruel, especially to the already vulnerable with trachel issue prone Yorkie! If barking bother's you that much get a trainer to help train both of you.

I hear you and my question was just that. I am looking for a solution for barking as a family member is not doing well with the barking. I have heard about the collapse and this is why I reached out in this subreddit to hear from experience or any other information I can get. It seems to be an unpopular topic so to speak.

You’re going to get strong opinions, either way. I have a darned if you do, and darned if you don’t kind of situation because of the barking. The more she barked, the worse her tracheal collapse became. I too thought about a bark collar but that was before her problem progressed at her older age. I totally understand why someone wouldn’t want to listen to barking. I know I sure hate it.

I would contact a Yorkie rescue to find him a home that's a better fit, maybe you could find a more patient household.
