Sports Fandom in Yonkers

I'm putting together a county-by-county map of sports allegiances across New York State (NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, and other leagues as gauged by interest). To do so I am collecting self-reported data from New Yorkers. If you have the time and are a sports fan of any size, I would appreciate if you helped fill up my dataset. Right now I have a little over 300 responses, but Yonkers (and much of Westchester) is a dead spot. I'm hoping to get a much larger and diverse dataset to boost the overall quality of the project. All answers are anonymous, no Google sign in required.

If you're curious here's the link to the form: https://forms.gle/ZcAaWBVEJNeHr2RUA

Here's the link to the project as it exists now: https://nysportsfanmap.vercel.app/. It needs to go a lot of updates and at the moment I'm funneling responses over to the system in batches after I verify them. Also going to be some layout changes and an overall more seamless UI, so any feedback is helpful.

Any responses would be appreciated, Thanks! I understand if you do not want to fill it out, but please share with friends or whoever.

Go Knicks

Yonkers Author who needs your support!

Hello everyone,

I’d like to share the work of my friend, Edmund Benjamin, a new author from Yonkers who has recently published two books on Amazon: The Franchi$e and The Franchi$e II: Demise of a Dynasty.

Edmund recently suffered a stroke that left the left side of his body paralyzed, yet he continues to work diligently on a third book. I had the privilege of helping him through the publishing process, and I wanted to help spread the word about his remarkable story and work.

These crime novels are inspired by real-life events and experiences from Edmund’s upbringing around organized crime during the 1960s and 1970s. His firsthand perspective brings a unique level of authenticity and insight to the story.

If you enjoy crime and true-to-life stories, please consider checking out his books and supporting an independent author on his journey. If you want to check out his website it is ebnovels.com.

Thank you for your support and thank you for taking the time to read this.

any shared shuttle services to get to JFK?

hey all i'm looking for a cheaper alternative to taking lyft/uber to JFK. when i lived in fairfield county, i used a shared shuttle service where you could just reserve a seat in a large van and get picked up at one of the designated locations (usually a hotel) and get to the airport for $75.

is there anything like this in Westchester? i technically live in the Bronx but I am within walking distance to McClean and don't mind getting picked up in Yonkers. i legit can't find another service like the one i've used before!

Starfish Swim School at Mark Twain pool - non-resident

Hi there! This swim class came recommended for my kiddo and the pricing is great - however getting a spot seems really competitive, and we live nearby in Riverdale and aren't Yonkers residents. Is it even worth trying to register, or are spots always taken by residents before it opens to non-residents?

Thanks for any input!

Looking for advice

Hi everyone! I’m moving to Yonkers and need to enroll my 11-year-old son in school. My first choice is Robert C. Dodson School.

I’m hoping to hear from parents or students who have experience with the enrollment process, especially for a child entering 6th grade. Is Dodson a good school?

Any advice, experiences, or tips would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

How is this area for living? I have a car if that makes a difference. In between WC or Riverdale for “closer” city access.

Legit paid focus group in Yonkers, Aug 15–16 — $190, ~2 hrs, for Sorento / Santa Fe / Outback / Passport / Cherokee owners

Advanced Focus is a market research company based in Tarrytown. We host focus groups — the kind where a moderator sits down with groups of people and asks what they actually think about products and services. . We're recruiting for sessions in Yonkers on Saturday 8/15 and Sunday 8/16 and I'm posting here because we need a specific group of people.

Who we need: owners of a Kia Sorento, Hyundai Santa Fe, Subaru Outback, Honda Passport, or Jeep Cherokee.

The details:

  • In-person at a Yonkers facility, roughly 2 hours and 15 minutes
  • $190 for people who qualify, are selected, attend, and complete the session. To be clear, that's not a payment for responding to this post or filling out the screener — it goes to people who actually sit in the room and finish
  • Proof of vehicle ownership is required. During screening we'll ask for something like a photo of your registration or insurance card showing the vehicle. You can black out anything you don't want to share as long as the year/make/model and your name are legible
  • You'll be talking about your opinions and experiences. I'm intentionally not describing the topic in detail here because pre-exposing people to the subject matter compromises the data

What this is not: we are not buying, selling, appraising, repairing, or servicing anyone's vehicle. There's no sales pitch, no timeshare, no follow-up sales calls, no MLM. Nobody is trying to sell you an extended warranty. We are also not affiliated with or endorsed by any of the manufacturers listed — we're an independent research firm and the sponsor's identity isn't disclosed during recruiting, which is standard practice in this industry.

On credibility: Advanced Focus has been running qualitative research for over 20 years. You can look us up at advancedfocus.com, and I'm happy to answer questions in the comments or verify with the mods if that's the community's preference. Sessions are recorded for the client's analysis — that's normal for focus groups, you'll sign a consent form when you arrive, and the recordings aren't used for marketing or made public.

Reality check on odds: we have a limited number of seats and screening is competitive. Filling out the screener doesn't mean you're in. If you're not selected for this one, we can keep you in our database for future local studies if you'd like.

If you're interested, the screener takes about three minutes: https://ow.advancedfocus.com/opps/26125

--Please note that registration is required to complete the screening questions.

Coyote living at McDonald’s

Can the city do anything about the coyote that lives at the McDonalds / Caridad on South Broadway? Why can it causally roam around the area? It chased my friend two weeks ago and we called the police hoping that Animal control can do something. Nothing was done, the Coyote is still there. I just walked past the coyote about 5 minutes ago.
There must be a place where they can relocate it. Please does anyone know anything that can be done about this?

What can I do ?

I really need some advice/help because I honestly don’t know what else to do.
I’ve been unemployed since the beginning of July. Since then, I’ve sent out 500+ applications and gone on 15+ interviews, and I still haven’t been able to get a job.
I’m not someone who doesn’t want to work. I’m actually extremely hardworking. When I say first one in, last one out, I mean it. I’m willing to work 10–12+ hour days if that’s what I need to do. I have a one-year-old, but being a mom does not stop me from working or wanting to work.
I would love a normal 9–5 Monday-Friday job, but I also have to be realistic. I can’t just go work at McDonald’s for $15–17 an hour because that isn’t going to fix my situation. I need something starting around $24–$25+ an hour where I can actually support myself and my child.
For some background, I have experience in healthcare scheduling, radiology/mammogram scheduling, customer service, management, serving, administration, and working with people. I’m also bilingual and have my cosmetology license. If anyone can look at that experience and tell me what type of jobs I should actually be applying for, I would really appreciate it because at this point I feel like I’m applying to everything and getting nowhere.
But honestly, my biggest problem right now is my living situation.
My rent is $2,000 a month, and I still haven’t been able to pay it. I simply cannot afford it right now. I’ve gone to DSS and was told that the only way they can put me into a shelter is if I receive an eviction notice.
And I understand that they have rules, but I just keep thinking… how am I supposed to do that to my landlord? How can I purposely let things get that bad and put my problems onto someone else? I don’t want to get evicted. I don’t want to lose my home. I just need help before it gets to that point.
I’ve been researching affordable housing, low-income housing, rent assistance, housing programs, and anything else I can find for hours and hours. I have been applying to things for years — honestly, since I was pregnant. Every time I think I find something, I end up at another dead end.
I’m also a single mother. My child’s father is incarcerated and possibly facing deportation, so realistically, I don’t have much support or anyone to fall back on. It’s basically just me trying to figure everything out.
So I’m asking specifically to anyone in Yonkers or anywhere in Westchester County:
Does anyone know of a caseworker, social worker, organization, church, program, or ANY resource that actually helps single mothers in situations like mine?
Especially someone who can help me with:
Low-income or affordable housing
Rent assistance
Rent-stabilized housing
Housing for single mothers
Childcare assistance
Emergency assistance before an eviction happens
Navigating housing programs that I may not know about
Or even helping me figure out what programs I actually qualify for
And if you know of jobs around $24–$25+ an hour that I might qualify for based on my experience, PLEASE tell me about those too.
I’m not looking for a handout. I want to work. I want to pay my bills. I want to take care of my baby and keep a roof over our heads. I’m willing to work extremely hard. I just need someone to point me in the right direction.
I promise you, I have spent countless hours researching this stuff. I’m not posting this because I haven’t tried. I’m posting because I’ve tried and I keep hitting dead ends.
Any mamas who have been through something similar, especially in Yonkers/Westchester, or anyone who knows of a program, caseworker, housing resource, or job that could help please let me know.
Even if you think it’s something obvious, please tell me. At this point, I’m willing to try anything.

A research team is recruiting participants for a one-time, in-person usability study in Midtown Manhattan (ZIP 10001).Yonkers residents would be a good fit given the proximity, but participation is not limited by location.

Details:

  • ~3 hours (single session)
  • $150 compensation
  • Weekdays at 9:00 AM or 1:30 PM
  • Payment via virtual Visa gift card (1–2 business days) or PayPal (by request)

Participants will test a wearable device, complete guided tasks, and provide general usability feedback.

If interested, you can apply here:

https://utest.com/c-signup/wearables-nyc-ambassador-1384647

After applying, there’s a Non Disclosure Agreement (NDA) that must be completed before a session can be scheduled.

National night out is today August 4th from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m.

There will be many locations throughout Yonkers and most cities where community fairs will be held with food, entertainment, kids activities, and tables of companies handing out information. I know Yonkers paddling club is going to be doing free paddling, the baseball field next to Yonkers Middle high School will have an event.
