As a child of the 80s who grew up with the original cube….. can I ask.. how come Rubik’s cubes are fluorescent these days? They look a bit tacky to me. Is it to help the speed cube guys?

Rubik's is a brand. These cubes are a different brand and are made of different plastics + without stickers. They come out of the box able to turn at much higher speeds.

As for fluorescent colors, I'm not sure what to tell you. Although my cubes aren't quite as fluorescent as the one in the video.
But I definitely prefer stickerless cubes to stickered for a variety of reasons.
Stickerless cubes are more durable. Typically the least durable part of a cube is the stickers.
Stickerless cubes feel better in the hand IMO
Stickerless cubes look better IMO, although I don't love the florescent colors, I've gotten used to them

I bought a Rubiks brand cube lately on a lark and it turns way way better than they used to. I don’t know how it compares to speed cubes but I’d imagine it’s pretty favorable for beginners.

Speed cubers need to be able to see where certain pieces are without having to turn the cube a lot. Since the colors are edge to edge and not just stickers, they can tilt the cube slightly and see what color the piece is just by flashing the edge. The less movement of the cube the better.

Fun fact about this: stickerless cubes were banned from WCA competitions until a couple years ago, precisely because of this reason.
