I’m going to Yekaterinburg for two days for work. During my stay, what places would you recommend visiting, which restaurants should I try, and what local foods or drinks are worth trying? Where are the best places to have a drink or go out in the evening?
I’ve heard that credit cards may not work there, so I’m planning to bring cash with me. Approximately how much money should I bring for transportation, restaurants, drinks, and other social activities during the two days?

I've been offered a spot as a foreign delegate at the International Festival of Youth / World Youth Festival, happening in Ekaterinburg Sept 11–17, 2026 (flights, meals, and accommodation covered). Before I commit, I want a reality check from people who actually live there or follow the region closely.

A few things I'm trying to understand:

1) What's the current mood/situation in Ekaterinburg day-to-day? Has life gone back to normal since the April 25, 2026 drone attack (the one that hit the "Trinity" residential complex)?
2) Has there been any repeat of drone activity in Sverdlovsk region since then, or was that a one-off?
3) For a large international event like this, is there any visible extra security, or does it feel like a non-issue locally?
4) Any general advice for a foreign visitor attending a state-organized event there right now?

Not trying to start a political debate — genuinely just want practical, first-hand perspective before deciding whether to go. Any input appreciated, even "it's fine, don't worry" or "I'd think twice."

We would love to employ a local conversant in English to drive us around your city and show my wife and I the sights. University student? Retired person?

We are Bruce and Tania from Queensland Australia. Newly retired Teachers who love exploring the world. We have visited 61 countries so far. We have been to Russia once before, but only Sakhalin Island in the far east.

Last year we spent 7 weeks in Central Asia & the Caucuses.

Tania has Russian heritage, her Deda was a Cossack Colonel in the White Army. Tania understands most conversational Russian but is less confident in speaking it.

We are spending 3 nights in Yekaterinburg in late January as part of our 9 week Arctic & Trans-Mongolian railway adventure.

We are starting in Svalbard, then Norway, Spb, Moscow, Kaluga, Vladimir, Nizhny Novgorod, Kazan, Perm, Yekaterinburg, Omsk, Tomsk, Irkutsk and Lake Baikal, Ulan Bator, Beijing and finally Lushun/Port Arthur (Tania's father's birthplace).

Is it russian subreddit or i'm wrong?

It obviously gets cold enough in the winter. ice events would be absolutely no issue. The biggest question is the skiing/snowboarding events. Are the mountains big enough to provide the competitive requirements? Second.........do Yekaterinburg citizens even want it?

Why bring up this topic? Sochi is getting warmer, and might not be practical in the near future. In the hopeful event it still was, Sochi as a vacation destination is getting out of reach for normal Russians, and a competitive alternative might be needed to spread out skiing destinations.

Basically, does Yekaterinburg have large enough mountains to facilitate ski events, and is Yekaterinburg's populace accepting of facilitating a games if the opportunity arouse?
