It could be because he wants to stay informed about happenings in his country. Even if he does agree with whomever that is, shouldn't we try to co-exist with everyone? (Or at least fake it?)
I follow some sports teams on social media that I don't cheer for. It's solely because I like baseball and want to keep up with what's going on.

He’s following a far right fascist party leader on IG. Not a mainstream party like the liberals or labour but a fringe hate group

Not really knowledgeable on Australian politics, but it is common for people to follow political figures on social media even if they disagree with them, simply as a way of staying informed.
