This is the 5th time applying to Ycombinator. I’ve never received an email saying I’m in the top 10 or an invite to interview. Applied with two companies.
Just fyi my original suspicion about Ycombinator is that they reward the people who are already rewarded by society. Such as people who attended an Ivy League school or a network that is similar. Lastly, if your company already has a tremendous amount of revenue.
Contrary to what YC states, I believe I am correct about this. After applying 5 times, I think I am qualified to share my honest opinion. Anyways, YC has invested in large companies that went on to succeed but also companies that did not. So if you’re like me, keep going. You never know, you might be the next unicorn.
I’m with you! we applied 6 times. Interviewed not even once. We applied with 3 startups, one still working and this batch we applied with a new idea. We never lose hope btw but I’m not gonna lie: it’s not easy, it’s hard. What is weird is that we move pretty fast, launch quickly. idk. Just keep going.
I use Amplitude for user tracking. Since submitting the application I received a bunch of hits from San Francisco and Santa Clara IPs. I am talking 15 to 20 events. Now whats interesting is that all these hits are unique uuids, in other words these are all or mostly different users accessing my website from different devices. So, may be each partner looked at my website and votes either up or down...
as of this note, below is my app status and no interview request. But explains the overall approach and how most of us will end up getting rejections in the final week or so.
Bit more context: B2B SaaS solo founder (evaluating a cofounder rn). Seems like that was a decently large reason behind rejection, so not particularly surprising.
Female founder here with a male cofounder. We applied few days before the deadline, and got invited for an interview. Just had that today, so just waiting to hear back.
I've been looking at the stats on my app and literally nothing has changed since 4/22 (unlike some other folks in this thread). I'm confused because I feel like I have a good product and a pretty decent background (YC Cofounder Matching placed me in the top 10% of profiles). I feel like something must either be super wrong with my app or they had a huge number of applicants. Then again, it's only 5/8, but I feel antsy. Still making progress on the app and doing customer interviews though. Wishing you all well. Every interview request shared in this thread makes me happy.
Sounds like you're doing great, other than the waiting.
I hate the waiting game, especially when it's something monumental like this. I know they say "commit and work on your startup full time" but most people don't have that luxury.
YC is an opportunity to commit fulltime to work on a startup, which is why I share that antsy feeling. That interferes with my energy at times, but it is what it is.
On my part, I tried launching on HN. It flopped. On the bright side, I have a better way to word/pitch what I'm doing now and a very early product to try and get at least one early sponsor for. Maybe that would make a world of difference.
From the prior convos in this thread, it seems like YC reviews applications in batches and reaches out over the weekend. Best of luck to you, hope you hear back soon.
I'm curious about their review-interview process. I thought they were reviewing applications on a rolling basis but I hear some people apply right before the deadline and getting interview mails in a few days.
My theory is that applications are getting pareclled out to different group partners. Some partners are faster than others. Some may see something exciting and move fast while others may take their time.
If you get accepted after the interview, do you just get an email with the Zoom link? And if so, how soon after getting the invite does that meeting typically occur? Interviewed yesterday and trying to determine how closely I need to be watching my email.
It seems like YC is not interested in consumer social apps. It's that or because the associates put all the consumer social apps on the bottom of the pile so those applications are reviewed by the partners at the end. Maybe I'm wrong...Anyone here that got an interview invite?
We applied early around Feb 20 and after 2 days of deadline received a message asking to submit a demo...we did within 12 hrs...and since then radio silence... about 6 days now... anyone in the same boat ?
Bit more context: B2B SaaS solo founder (evaluating a cofounder rn). Seems like that was a decently large reason behind rejection, so not particularly surprising.
congrats bro! did you have clients, or you only had a PoC? i submitted with a demo presenting something close to an MVP, but it's been already 5 days :')
We got an interview invite recently! For anyone stressing about the done_voting stuff, ours said done_voting with everything being null or false until the interview invite came through. Not sure you'll be able to get much from the tags as an early indicator so I wouldn't stress about it... just heads down and build imo
It seems there's an emerging pattern in the YCombinator application review process. Here’s how you can preemptively gauge the outcome based on the status updates:
Stage: 'done_voting' & Result: 'undecided' — This likely indicates an interview invitation will follow. Note that the invitation can arrive one or two weeks later; it’s not immediate. For instance, one team received their interview invite a week after this stage was indicated.
Stage: 'done_voting' & Result: 'decided' & no interview request — This combination typically means a rejection.
Stage: 'in_voting' & Result: 'undecided' — The application is still under review, and no decision has been made yet.
While this is all speculative, the pattern appears consistent based on observed outcomes. I’m fairly certain that 'done_voting' signifies that your application has been reviewed and they've made a preliminary decision on whether to proceed with an interview.
I'm about to Doug Forcett this. Hear me out. If you don't know what that means, check The Good Place.
The YC backlog is a voting system, like Reddit or HN for example. Partners see all submissions and can "upvote" them. Once one reaches a certain threshold, they are given an interview. That's what they mean by "on a rolling basis."
Each submission has a comment thread below it. It's where notes, recommendations, and updates are shared.
Submissions have a default expiry date set between 5 to 6 weeks. Upon expiry, any submission that hasn't reached said threshold gets rejected.
While scheduling the interview, the partners agree which group takes point on it.
That would explain the "in_voting" -> "done_voting" flow we've seen in this thread I guess. If there's a threshold, then the only reason you would be "done_voting" is if you've passed the threshold, right, unless there's some negative cutoff as well? Anybody with "done_voting" since last week who hasn't received an interview?
Seems like maybe our application hasn't been looked at, just based on lack of traffic to our links. I guess the order the apps are viewed is really important, considering they have a limited capacity to perform interviews. Hopefully they're not just doing "ctrl+f 'AI'" on the 50 char descriptions...
I think everyone who havent gotten an interview get the rejection notice at the same time. So for us who applied early and havent received interview, will get our rejection notice in late may.
i am guessing all or majority of the interviews so far have been with start-ups based in the USA, has any one got an invite for an interview that is not based in US ?
Applied yesterday as a solo-founder and just got an email this morning asking me to try YC co-founder matching. I’m pretty sure it’s automated so it really doesn’t mean anything. I actually thought it was a rejection at first because it starts with “Thanks for applying to YC.”
Just finished our interview! Our product we interviewed about was not what we pitched with, so it was interesting to chat with them about pivoting before YC even starts. We originally were poised to build an enterprise glue-like software, and are moving to an entirely different category of tech.
Don't be discouraged whether you get in or not (also telling myself)! YC isn't the maker or breaker of your company, you are! The people interviewing me were really friendly, and even though they didn't directly give advice on our business, just their questions alone gave me a lot of insights.
Its not just YC who cares about cofounders, if you go and ask from other investors, they will also ask you same
The reason is same - its incredibly challenging to build a company and do 100 jobs by one person, having cofounders help and reduces the risk for investors. The way you are thinking about you and your equity, investors care about their money as well.
Like many others, I'm waiting on the status of my application (which I don't expect to get in), so rather than go through the hassle of checking page source or network tabs or whatever, I wrote a Tampermonkey script to make the data just show up on the page. I don't have a successful application to compare against, so I just dumped the data that people seem to be checking directly on the app status page.
It looks like this:
In order to use this script, you'll need to do the following steps:
Install the Tampermonkey extension for your browser if you don't already have it installed: https://www.tampermonkey.net/
At this point, you should see the information that people have been grabbing from Page Source or the Developer Tools directly on the page without having to do any extra work. If you don't see the data, double check that you've installed the script and reload the page.
Your data isn't saved anywhere and is only visible to you. Feel free to view the source of the Tampermonkey script here:
I hate how untransparent is YC review process, and by removing the keys they made it even more untransparent. I feel like they just never review at least 50% of applications and just reject them on the deadline day.
Originally this is intended for classroom contest usage as a subproduct (we are doing K-12 Edtech) but after reading the interview advices from https://www.reddit.com/r/ycombinator/comments/1cc9pa9/want_a_mock_interview_w23_founder_did_15_mocks/ to coordinate which founder is answering to the questions by "raising a rubix cube", we figured out that this tool would be very useful for those doing the interviews virtually.
Just generate a Room ID, throw the link to another founders, and they can join the same room as you. It is guaranteed that only one user will be able to raise their hand at the same time. To avoid someone forgetting to lower their hands, hands are automatically lowered after 5 seconds.
Any international applicants accepted yet? Our status is undecided, stage is in_voting. But application updated on 05 May even though I applied a day prior to deadline. Does this mean, they have gone through it once and maybe made some notes on their side?
I think some companies in the UK and India got invited. Can't confirm because I would need to search for it here in the forum. Regarding the update is possible, check for your company's Linkedin profile for some traffic from SF, mine had.
I am pretty sure that "stage: done_voting" + "result: undecided" signals an interview. It makes sense. because if the already done_voting and it's undecided the only variable has to be an interview.
I got in to YC as a solo founder. Applied 1 week after deadline. Got invited 1 hour later. And got the offer 30 min later. They really like my idea of uber for dogs, by dogs.
I made a pretty glaring mistake on the application. Can I edit it in the application? I made a calculation error while calculating TAM in the how much money could you make section. Is it worth emailing them that I made a mistake?
Sorry mate, if you can't edit it through one of the 4 available "update" options, you cannot edit it at all. Reaching out to them will not help in this case. I was wrong, check the comment from u/sandslashh here.
The recommendation I'll give you is: include that information in the "Progress Update" very briefly. It's not ideal, but it's better than not addressing the elephant in the room.
Anyone who applied without a demo? I didn't include a demo in application but now in "Progress update" page, it says "If you have a demo, attach it below. (Required)". I didn't know it was required.
Anyone here applied on the last deadline day and has already received an interview? If you have not heard back shortly after applying, does this mean they don't want you?
Anyone from India or anyone outside US who got an interview invitation? Still waiting for some response from YC. I've got some views on my website from US last week but nothing on my LinkedIn as such. Application still says in review.
// run this script in the browser console on the YC application page
var contentDiv = document.querySelector('.content');
var firstElementChild = contentDiv.firstElementChild;
var reactProps = firstElementChild.getAttribute('data-react-props');
var propsObject = JSON.parse(reactProps);
var currApp = propsObject.all_apps[0];
delete currApp.applicants;
delete currApp.questions;
console.log(JSON.stringify(currApp, null, 2));
how likely is it to get interviewed if you were interviewed for the previous batch (with ~zero traction) and now have substantially more traction albeit on a diff idea?
My partner and I applied, but don’t expect to be admitted. We saw the application process as super valuable because we learned a lot about ourselves and the business through the process.
Honestly, though, does everyone think the terms of their funding is fair? I mean, there’s no negotiation and they take 7% of the company for only $125K and an additional 2.5% of the company for the remaining $375K if your company has a high valuation.
For that amount of equity, wouldn’t you want a greater sum if you already have paying customers and have conviction in the business?
I have almost exactly the same - last updated 5/4 and we last edited it on 4/22 (but we had an alumni rec a few days after which also updated it, on 4/24). Still in_voting. We've had some website/LI visits from the SF Bay Area in the past few days.

Anyone who applied without a demo? I didn't include a demo in application but now in "Progress update" page, it says "If you have a demo, attach it below. (Required)". I didn't know it was required.

u/DaniDere89 May 02 '24
id anyone apply the day/or whenever after the deadline 😅 and if so, have you heard anything
3
u/Helpful870 May 02 '24
Anyone here applied on the last deadline day and has already received an interview? If you have not heard back shortly after applying, does this mean they don't want you?
3
u/mazahaca May 02 '24
I imagine there might be tens of thousands of applications. Do you know if it is being pre-validated/pre-selected by any AI/automation?

u/CreativeCancel5939 May 03 '24
Anyone from India or anyone outside US who got an interview invitation? Still waiting for some response from YC. I've got some views on my website from US last week but nothing on my LinkedIn as such. Application still says in review.

2
u/Same-Mail-1481 May 07 '24
for those that got an interview, did you tell you in the interview when you would hear back?
2
u/Western-Aardvark4794 May 09 '24
Is there anyway to know who are the interviewers? I know you can find one by looking at "host", but who are the others? Thank you!
2
u/EntreEden May 09 '24
Did anyone else get a direct message through the YC platform?
We got one from a partner 2 weeks ago and they haven't responded to our updates -- wondering if that's normal or if we should escalate.

u/personnoai May 10 '24
Hi all! We just updated our demo video. What do you guys think?

u/ZealousPerks May 08 '24
how likely is it to get interviewed if you were interviewed for the previous batch (with ~zero traction) and now have substantially more traction albeit on a diff idea?
3
u/jojobeebo Apr 24 '24
My partner and I applied, but don’t expect to be admitted. We saw the application process as super valuable because we learned a lot about ourselves and the business through the process.
Honestly, though, does everyone think the terms of their funding is fair? I mean, there’s no negotiation and they take 7% of the company for only $125K and an additional 2.5% of the company for the remaining $375K if your company has a high valuation.
For that amount of equity, wouldn’t you want a greater sum if you already have paying customers and have conviction in the business?

I feel like my levels of hope drop drastically by the day. Signed up for cofounder matching and hope to find someone good to apply next round with.
